Multiplayer Overview
CoD4 allows players to compete against other players on various matches in various game types. Players can advance and earn access to new weapons and abilities. Throughout multiplayer, several stats are tracked. These include overall score, accuracy, win/loss record, and kill/death ratio.
Advancement
While playing CoD4 multiplayer, you will gain xp for every kill as well as for other objectives. Bonus xp is also gained for finishing matches and challenges. Xp allows the player to level up and gain advancements. These unlock new weapons, perks, and challenges.
Once a player reaches level 55, they can enter prestige mode. This resets them back to level 1 removing all weapons, perks, and such that were unlocked through advancements. Players gain a new symbol each time they prestige. The current max prestige is 10.

Gametypes
Team Deathmatch (12 player max)
Traditional team match. Team's score points for each kill. Team with the highest score wins. Each kill awards 10 xp.
Mercenary Team Deathmatch (12 player max)
Same as team deathmatch with the one restriction that players are randomly distributed to the two teams.
Free-for-All (12 player max)
Traditional game type. Every player for themselves. Each kill awards 10 xp.
Domination (12 player max)
Take and hold style maps. Teams acquire points by holding any of the 3 objectives. Each objective is a flag labeled as A, B, or C. Objectives are captures by standing near the flag. More player nearby causes a faster capture.
Ground War (18 player max)
Ground war matches are either team deathmatch or domination games. The only difference is the larger player cap.
Sabotage
Sabotage is a destroy/defend game. One team has a bomb and is tasked with destroying an objective. The other team must defend the objective. Game ends when the objective is destroyed or the time limit is reached.
Search and Destroy
S&D is basically a sabotage match. There is one major difference. In normal sabotage, players respawn endlessly. In S&D, each player has only a single life. If a player dies, they must wait until the match ends and are stuck as a spectator. Each kill in S&D is worth 50 xp.
Headquarters
HQ matches are somewhat similar to domination. A HQ location will spawn somewhere on the map. The goal is to take and hold that location to gain points. Once a team captures the HQ, the other team must try to destroy it. This is made easier due to the fact that players on the team in control of the HQ will not respawn until the HQ is destroyed.
Hardcore Types
Hardcore style matches are exactly like the normal gametypes. The one major difference is that friendly fire is enabled. These types of games are notorious for grievers and team killers.
Cage Match
One person versus another person. Quite cool for unlocking golden guns and camos as you can invite your friend into the game and let each other get headshots on each other.
Old School Free-for-all
Free-for-all but without classes. You must collect weapons and perks from the surrounding area, jumps are higher and deaths are over-exaggerated.
Variety Pack Team Deathmatch
This mode is only available if you have the new map pack. It is the same as normal team deathmatch, but focuses on the new maps.
Variety Pack Team Objective
This mode is only available if you have the new map pack. It is made up of several game types just like Ground War. The game types included are Headquarters and Domination.
Maps
Ambush
Ambush is a rather large map. It looks to be a bombed out city that is divided in two by a center street which is littered with wrecked cars and a single tank.
Backlot
Backlot is a medium sized square map. It is marked by the construction site that makes up one of the four sides.
Bloc
Bloc is a somewhat large map. It is comprised of two large rectangular buildings looking out over a central square. This stage is notorious for snipers hiding on the second floors of either building.
Bog
Bog is a medium sized rectangular map. It is marked by its tank, a central hill, and a bus. There are a few buildings running down one side of the map while a chain fence blocks the other side.
Broadcast
Broadcast is one of the 4 new maps available in the map pack. It is based around the "Charlies Don't Surf" campaign mission. It is marked by the TV broadcast station. The interior is very much like the campaign mission. Outside however adds a whole new area. Beyond the parking lot, there are several small buildings. These buildings provide excellent vantage points for the second floor of the broadcast station.
Chinatown
Chinatown is one of the 4 new maps available in the map pack. It is based upon one of the multiplayer maps from the original Call of Duty called Carentan. The map also appeared in CoD2. It has been re-skinned for CoD4. The map is comprised of many small buildings and alleys. Every building has a second floor with a number of open windows.
Countdown
Countdown is a large flat map filled with missile silos. There are lots of obstructions in the center. Stone retention walls, cargo containers, and the silo hatches all provide some cover. You can fall to your death into the open silos.
Crash
Crash is a medium sized map marked by the downed chopper in the center. There are a lot of buildings around the area.
Creek
Creek is one of the 4 new maps available in the map pack. It is a large outdoors map. It has several key features, including a waterfall and of course a creek. There is also a cave that runs underneath the hill and across the map. There is a small shanty town on each side of the map. The north side has homes including one whose roof is accessible for a nice sniping position. The south side is more of a farm complex.
Crossfire
Crossifre is a medium sized map whose main road is shaped somewhat like a Z.
District
Large urban town with a market in the middle.
Downpour
Downpour is a medium sized map marked fittingly enough by the rainy setting.
Killhouse
Killhouse is one of the 4 new maps available in the map pack. It is based upon the FNG campaign mission. Set within an airplane hanger, killhouse looks very much like a mock battlefield.
Overgrown
Overgrown is a large map marked by a large dried up river bed running down the middle. There is a large barn at one corner of the map and two bridges that cross over the river at either end of the map.
Pipeline
Pipeline is a medium sized map that is marked by the two large factories and the train line.
Shipment
Shipment is the smallest map. It is a small square littered with cargo containers. The map is so small that players will usually start the game on top of each other. This allows for immediate knife kills. Games on this map are fast and furious, resulting in high kill/death counts. Grenades, air strikes, and choppers are extremely deadly here. Great map for completing weapon challenges.
Showdown
Showdown is a small map with a single square structure in the center. The structure makes up the majority of the map. This building is basically just a wall surrounding a central courtyard. The upper floor of the building provides clear site down into the courtyard.
Strike
Large urban desert town.
Vacant
Vacant is a medium sized map that is mostly indoors map with lots of tight hallways. There is a portion that is outside which is littered with cargo containers. Air strikes and the chopper are rather ineffective due to most of the map being inside.
Wetworks
Wetworks is a medium sized map that takes place on a cargo ship. It highly resembles the 2nd level of the campaign Containers litter the deck of the ship. A pair of walkways break the ship into thirds. At either end of the ship, there is a wheel house type structure.
