Multiplayer Overview

CoD4 allows players to compete against other players on various matches in various game types. Players can advance and earn access to new weapons and abilities. Throughout multiplayer, several stats are tracked. These include overall score, accuracy, win/loss record, and kill/death ratio.

Advancement

While playing CoD4 multiplayer, you will gain xp for every kill as well as for other objectives. Bonus xp is also gained for finishing matches and challenges. Xp allows the player to level up and gain advancements. These unlock new weapons, perks, and challenges.

Once a player reaches level 55, they can enter prestige mode. This resets them back to level 1 removing all weapons, perks, and such that were unlocked through advancements. Players gain a new symbol each time they prestige. The current max prestige is 10.

Gametypes

Team Deathmatch (12 player max)

Traditional team match. Team's score points for each kill. Team with the highest score wins. Each kill awards 10 xp.

Mercenary Team Deathmatch (12 player max)

Same as team deathmatch with the one restriction that players are randomly distributed to the two teams.

Free-for-All (12 player max)

Traditional game type. Every player for themselves. Each kill awards 10 xp.

Domination (12 player max)

Take and hold style maps. Teams acquire points by holding any of the 3 objectives. Each objective is a flag labeled as A, B, or C. Objectives are captures by standing near the flag. More player nearby causes a faster capture.

Ground War (18 player max)

Ground war matches are either team deathmatch or domination games. The only difference is the larger player cap.

Sabotage

Sabotage is a destroy/defend game. One team has a bomb and is tasked with destroying an objective. The other team must defend the objective. Game ends when the objective is destroyed or the time limit is reached.

Search and Destroy

S&D is basically a sabotage match. There is one major difference. In normal sabotage, players respawn endlessly. In S&D, each player has only a single life. If a player dies, they must wait until the match ends and are stuck as a spectator. Each kill in S&D is worth 50 xp.

Headquarters

HQ matches are somewhat similar to domination. A HQ location will spawn somewhere on the map. The goal is to take and hold that location to gain points. Once a team captures the HQ, the other team must try to destroy it. This is made easier due to the fact that players on the team in control of the HQ will not respawn until the HQ is destroyed.

Hardcore Types

Hardcore style matches are exactly like the normal gametypes. The one major difference is that friendly fire is enabled. These types of games are notorious for grievers and team killers.

Cage Match

One person versus another person. Quite cool for unlocking golden guns and camos as you can invite your friend into the game and let each other get headshots on each other.

Old School Free-for-all

Free-for-all but without classes. You must collect weapons and perks from the surrounding area, jumps are higher and deaths are over-exaggerated.

Variety Pack Team Deathmatch

This mode is only available if you have the new map pack. It is the same as normal team deathmatch, but focuses on the new maps.

Variety Pack Team Objective

This mode is only available if you have the new map pack. It is made up of several game types just like Ground War. The game types included are Headquarters and Domination.

These buildings provide excellent vantage points for the second floor of the broadcast station.

Image:Cod4 map crash.jpg

This allows for immediate knife kills. Games on this map are fast and furious, resulting in high kill/death counts. Grenades, air strikes, and choppers are extremely deadly here. Great map for completing weapon challenges.

Image:Cod4 map shipment.jpg

Showdown

Showdown is a small map with a single square structure in the center. The structure makes up the majority of the map. This building is basically just a wall surrounding a central courtyard. The upper floor of the building provides clear site down into the courtyard.

Large urban desert town.

Image:Cod4 map strike.jpg

Vacant

Vacant is a medium sized map that is mostly indoors map with lots of tight hallways. There is a portion that is outside which is littered with cargo containers. Air strikes and the chopper are rather ineffective due to most of the map being inside.

Image:Cod4 map vacant.jpg

Wetworks is a medium sized map that takes place on a cargo ship. It highly resembles the 2nd level of the campaign Containers litter the deck of the ship. A pair of walkways break the ship into thirds. At either end of the ship, there is a wheel house type structure.
