Donkey Kong Country is the first game of three in the Donkey Kong Country Series that originally came out for the SNES. If you enjoy this game you might want to check out the other two games or possibly some other game from the Donkey Kong franchise.

Game Modes

One of the first choices you need to make in this game is which mode you'd like to play. There are three different to choose from:

  • One player - Exactly what it sound like. One controller controls all actions.
  • Two player contest - This will create two teams each controlled separatly. Two controllers are required, one for every team. Instead of the usual red this second set of monkey will wear yellow outfits. Whenever one controller finish a level or is killed the turn is passed over to the next team. If when team gets Game Over this team is out and only one team will remain.
  • Two player team - Here you will also need two controllers but this time you will only have one team with two monkeys, like a regular one player game. The change is that you will control Donkey with controller #1 and Diddy with #2.

Characters

Playable characters

When the game first begins you will only have Donkey. Each character can take only one hit. If you want a lost pal back you need to find and break a DK-barrel.
Check out the controls section to find out how to perform the characters respective special attack.

  • Donkey Kong
The largest and strongest of the two selectable apes. His strenght lies within his strength. Basically he can knock out certain enemies that Diddy can't. This depends on which attack that is used with which character on which enemy. Donkey's special attack is a ground pound. With this he can find hidden bananas from the ground and enemies and kill the enemy.
  • Diddy Kong
Probably you will find yourself switching to Diddy, rather than Donkey, anytime you have the opportunity. He is smaller and faster which usually makes things easier and quicker. Also he carries the barrels in front of himself. This will serve as a shield, preventing you from loosing Diddy caused by an accidental frontal collision with an enemy of the right altitude. A unique ability for Diddy is his air jump. With this he can reach places that are otherwhise out of reach.

Family and Friends

These characters will appear on each segment of the overworld to provide their services. Unlike the sequels in the Doneky Kong Country series all of these services are completely free of charge.

Cranky outside his cabin
Cranky outside his cabin
  • Cranky Kong
He will support you by giving useful tips and advice mixed with plenty of meaningless talking served to you in a monologue.
  • Candy Kong
This is truely the most useful of the three. Via Candy's stance and the floating barrel infront of it you are able to save your progress. Her stances are the checkpoints in the game and can occasionally be frustratingly located after a level you're having trouble with. This may, in worst case, result in a vast loss of progress.
Funky's Flights
Funky's Flights
  • Funky Kong
Funky is running an air company and will let you use his aircraft. By doing this you will be taken to the world map where you can choose any unlocked section and further any available level in the selected section. His function can be seen as a complement to Candy. Sometimes Funky's hut is accessable before Candy in a specific area. You can then travel back to any previous map and save there instead. Or you might want to go back to grind for additional extra life or just to replay a level you enjoyed.

Animal Buddies

As the other friendly NPC's only exist in the overworld these creatures are only accessable from inside a level. They are either assisting you on the level you find them on (they won't stay in your possession once you exit the level) or used in bonus stages but then manoeuvered directly without the presence of any monkey. When you're riding an animal it will have its own hit point. If you take damage when riding your mount will flee. Try to catch it again before it goes too far or fall into a bottomless hole.

  • Rambi the Rhino
A very powerful ally. He allows you to jump on basically any enemy. You can also charge into most enemies and he will defeat them automatically with his horn. You can perform a manual twist with the horn (attack button) but this is practically useless since it's done fully automatically upon impact with any defeatable/destroyable creature/object. This means Rambi is especially useful when it comes to finding secret passages. All you need to do is walk against the wall and the rest will handle itself.
Can be found in: Jungle Hijinxs, Oil Drum Alley, Manic Mincers
  • Expresso the Ostrich
All animal buddies are found in levels locked inside a cage with their symbol on it. This is how Expresso's cage look like.

Here it's all about the speed. High speed running and good jumping ability that can be extended into floating in the air by flapping the wings using the jump button. Completely lacks any offensive ability. You will not be able to jump on enemies while mounted and the smallest will simply be run over without any infliction on any party.
Can be found in: Temple Tempest, Orang-utan Gang, Ice Age Alley, Misty Mine
  • Enguarde the Swordfish
This aquatic creature will drastically improve your swimming ability. Swiftly you can navigate using only the D-pad with no need to tap the swim button. His sword functions similar to Rambis horn. Manual use is slightly more useful in Enguardes case though. The boost he gets from it can be used to move quicker and avoid getting hit in some situations.
Can be found in: Every water level in the game; Coral Capers, Clam City, Chroctopus Chase, Poison Pond
  • Winky the Frog
With high jumps he will take you to places you otherwhise wouldn't reach. As for the offense you will be able to jump on a wider variety of enemys. For those who are familiar with Yoshi from the Super Mario Series, Winky can be sacrificed in the same way. Instead of having all of you falling down the pit when an unsuccessful jump is made it is able to dismount in mid-air so the monkey(s), hopefully, will reach the designated platform.
Can be found in: Winky's Walkway, Bouncy Bonanza, Millstone Mayhem, Rope Bridge Rumble
  • Squaks the Parrot
Squakes is the only animal buddie you can't mount and also the only one without his own bonus stage. Also, rather than being just an extra help like the others he is basically necessary to complete the level. When released from his cage he will soar above you and follow you like this automatically. All he does is holding a light so you won't have to run the stage in darkness.
Can be found in: Torchlight Trouble
