Plot

Niko Bellic has heard from his cousin Roman that Liberty City is a paradise of luxury condos and beautiful women. So he decides to leave Serbia and his tough-guy past behind him. When he gets off the boat, he finds that Roman has been a little creative with his descriptions of the city and his living arrangements. Niko finds himself in a cockroach infested apartment in a city besieged by crime. Niko has the street smarts and skills to make a less than honest living in his new home, but he's also come to this new land looking for revenge.

Liberty City

Liberty City is an expansive area modeled after the real-life New York City. Liberty City is divided into islands connected by bridges and tunnels, and each area has its own distinct look and feel. Richer areas have more expensive cars on the street and better dressed pedestrians. Poorer areas have more street crime and are in general disrepair.

The city has a day and night cycle, and traffic and pedestrians adhere to realistic patterns. Traffic is heavier during rush hour, and lighter at night. Hot dog vendors are out during the day, and hookers come out only at night.

At the beginning of the game, only the Broker/Dukes section of the city is accessible. The bridges to the other areas are blockaded by police, and running these blockades will get you a six star wanted level. Traveling to other areas by boat has the same effect. These areas are unlocked by completing the game's missions.

Area Unlocked by mission
Broker Start of game
Dukes Start of game
Bohan Roman's Sorrow
Algonquin Blow Your Cover
Alderney Three Leaf Clover

Gameplay

GTA 4 is a sandbox style game. It's designed to give the player as much freedom as possible. There are missions that move the plot forward, but players have a wide degree of freedom in deciding how to accomplish those missions. There are also plenty of things to do in Liberty City that aren't related to missions. Player can go out on dates, go to restaurants and strip clubs, participate in races, or just drive around the city. Mini games include pool, darts, and bowling.

Weapons

Weapons can be picked up from downed enemies or purchased from gun shops or Little Jacob. Most weapons have to be unlocked by completing missions.

Projectiles

You can pick up a variety of projectiles such as bricks, bottles, hotdogs and burgers from the ground, tables and stands of Liberty City.

Fist

Sometimes a mission calls for you to hurt someone without killing them. For these situations, only your bare fists will do the job.

Knife

The knife is useful for missions when you must kill quietly. You first get it during the "Bleed Out" mission. You cannot buy a knife at the gun shop, but you can from Little Jacob.

Baseball Bat

  • Cost: $5

The baseball bat can be purchased from the gun shop. It takes the same weapon slot as the knife, so you can only carry one of them.

Pistol

  • Cost: $600
  • Magazine capacity: 17
  • Max ammo: 1500
  • Ammo cost: $35 for 17

This is the first gun you get in the game, acquired in the Jamaican Heat mission. If you want to pick up a hidden pistol at the start of the game, head south from your safehouse to the old carnival. You'll see a go-kart track, and a large mural on the building next to it. The gun is on the ground next to the track, just below the "s" where the mural reads "Go-Karts." There is another pistol on the walkway in the center of the Broker Bridge.

Combat Pistol

  • Cost: $1500
  • Magazine capacity: 9
  • Max ammo: 1500
  • Ammo cost: $100 for 9

This pistol does more damage than the standard pistol, but it holds less ammo. It is unlocked in the gun store after the Museum Piece mission.

Micro SMG

  • Cost: $1200
  • Magazine capacity: 50
  • Max ammo: 1200
  • Ammo cost: $100 for 50

SMG

  • Cost: $2500
  • Magazine capacity: 30
  • Max ammo: 1200
  • Ammo cost: $130 for 30

A more powerful and accurate gun than the Micro SMG. It becomes available in the gun shop after the Blow Your Cover mission.

Assault Rifle

  • Cost: $3500
  • Magazine capacity: 30
  • Max ammo: 600
  • Ammo cost: $80 for 30

Carbine Rifle

RPG

  • Ammo cost: $5000 each

This is a rocket launcher, and it is perfect for taking out cars, helicopters, or groups of enemies. It is unlocked after the Baby Sitting mission.

Grenade

  • Cost: $1000 each

To throw a grenade, you must target something (not necessarily locked on, just aiming with LT). If you have nothing targeted, Niko will drop the grenade at his feet. This is useful if someone is chasing you.

Niko rolls grenades along the ground when crouched. This means that any obstacle in the way will cause the grenade to bounce back to you. He throws them in an arc when standing.

Molotov

  • Cost: $500 each

Molotovs don't do as much damage as grenades, but Niko can throw them farther.
