Quick Strategies

  • RPG projectiles can "skip" off the ground if fired at a shallow angle ("shallow" generally being any point on the ground that isn't close enough for the rocket blast to immediately kill you). Skipping rockets often slide under vehicles. Thus if you have the time it's best to aim directly at large targets rather than at the ground for "splash damage" as you may have been trained to do in a given FPS game.
  • Grenades are very hard to see, if you're being chased, try dropping one on the ground by just tapping fire.
  • Remember the objectives of the game type. If you're doing car-jack, then killing the enemy players isn't as important as finding and protecting your team's jacked cars.
  • Your gamertag disappears when crouching.
  • Pay attention to whether auto-aim is turned on or not, it can greatly affect your strategies
    • If auto-aim is on:
      • Your pistol is a very deadly weapon, just make sure you nudge up to hit the head.
      • People in cars do not have auto-aim ever, so when auto-aim is on, you can out-shoot pretty much anyone in a vehicle. This goes for drivers as well, if you knock someone down with your car, get out to finish them, don't try to do a drive-by.
      • Some people in auto-aim are dependent on it, that means you can shoot them from longer distances, outside auto range, if you're used to not having it.
    • If auto-aim is off:
      • High rate of fire weapons like uzis and assault weapons, as well as the shotgun become much more useful.
      • Run around in a car if you can, it's essentially free body armor that you could possibly run over opponents with.
      • Note, however, that it can be more difficult to hit someone via drive-by shooting from a car, and that opponents can generally out-shoot you if you're in a vehicle, auto-aim or not.
    • Note that the sniper rifle and rocket launcher will not lock-on regardless of auto-aim settings.

Modes

Team

Team Deathmatch

  • 2-8 Teams

Players work as a team to rub out the other teams for money, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins. Take the other crew down. Remember to loot the cash dropped by deceased players. That's the way to get ahead!

Team Mafiya Work

  • 2-8 Teams

You're a member of a crew doing contract work for the mafiya, including such plum gigs as escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins, and stealing cars. Work as a team to complete contracts before the time period ends and get the rewards. You'll probably want to do your best to scupper the other crew's work as well. Each contract you complete gives your team cash, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

Team Car Jack City

  • 2-8 Teams

Cars spawn parked around the map and the teams must steal them and take them to a drop-off point. The cash teams get for dropping off stolen vehciles depends on their condition - teams get less cash the more damaged they are. The exception to this are special bonus cars, stuffed with drugs, which give a set amount of cash on delivery no matter how damaged they are. Your crew has to get hold of whatever vehicles the boss wants. Whichever crew makes the most money wins.

Cops n' Crooks

  • 2 Teams Only

A team-based mode in which the Crooks must get their Boss to safety, while the Cops have to take him down. The Boss is marked with a crosshair. This game mode works best on larger maps. On small maps the Cops tend to arrive before the Boss can find a car.

This mode has two sub-modes: All for One and One for All, both of which can be won by the Cops if they manage to destroy the getaway vehicle.

All for One

One team is made up of Crooks and a Boss, and the other team is made up of Cops. The Cops are trying to hunt down and kill the Boss while the Crooks are trying to protect him. The Cops win by killing the Boss and the Crooks win by getting the Boss safely to the getaway vehicle and escaping.

One for All

Similar to All for One except there is no Boss. Here, the Cops win by killing all of the Crooks and the Crooks win by filling up a getaway vehicle with members of their team. Only 4 people can escape in the getaway vehicle. Players cannot respawn in this mode.

Turf War

  • 2 Teams Only

A timed capture-the-base mode. There are a number of bases around the map that you have to take by standing on them for a short period of time. The more players that are on a base, the faster it can be captured. The more bases that your team owns, the faster your team's cash score increases. If the rival gang is on or near a base, you won't be able to take control of it, so do what you can to try to displace them. The team with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

Cooperative

Free Mode

Free Mode allows for up to 16 players to be online in the full map running amok. Players are free to do whatever they want in this no-rules, no-holds-barred roaming option.

Some players use Free Mode to make up their own games. Tag and demolition derby are popular choices. Make up whatever rules you want.

Hangman's Noose

In this co-op scenario, the authorities have surrounded Francis International Airport to take down Kenny Petrovic. That's where you and your crew come in. Petrovic's contracted you to protect him by any means, and facilitate an escape across town to a safe house before the noose tightens. If Petrovic dies, you all fail.

When the mission starts, you'll have to hold off the Noose officers. Use the shipping containers as cover. Send one or two of your team members out to find a vehicle. There are a few cars that can be found to the south, or you can steal a police truck. You can also grab a vehicle and drive to the north side of the airport, where you can steal a helicopter. Take this vehicle over to the plane, and Kenny will get in. You must now drive over to the escape point on Colony Island. Other players should grab vehicles and drive ahead of and behind Kenny's vehicle to prevent cops from killing him.

Deal Breaker

A major deal is going down between the biker gang and the Mafia - and you've been cut out. Head over there with your crew and put the kaibosh on it by ripping off both parties. Get hold of the merchandise and get out of Dodge. No one can know that Kenny Petrovic was behind this, so your crew must eliminate all witnesses.

Bomb da Base II

NOTE: This special online co-op mode pays tribute to the beloved 8-Ball mission from Grand Theft Auto III.

A rival export business has a ship sitting in the docks waiting to be loaded. Per contract from Kenny Petrovic, you and your crew must steal the explosives from a convoy, gain access to the ship, and plant two bombs. Then get off the ship before she blows.

Competitive

Deathmatch

Quite simple: with up to 16 players online, your objective is to have the most kills within the set time. Players are awarded ontract money for each kill, and can also loot casualties for their dropped cash. The player with the most cash when the game ends wins.

Mafiya Work

Doing the Russian Mafiya's dirty work is a cutthroat business. In this mode, at Kenny Petrovic's behest, you'll need to complete a variety of different contracts before your opponents do and reap the rewards in the process. Contracts range from collecting certain cards, taking out victims, and picking up prostitutes to blowing up vehicles. Successfully completed contracts earn you cash - and the player with the most cash at the end wins.

Car Jack City

Steal whatever car the boss wants. The amount you get paid per vehicle will depend on the condition they're in when delivered to the destination point. However, there are also bonus vehicles on the boss's wish list that happen to contain narcotic contraband - he will let you know if one of these comes up, and it will be marked in green on the map. The extra cargo of these cars outweighs the significance of the damage, so just get them back to the boss any way you can. Whoever earns the most money at the end wins.

Race

Race

Race to the finish through each checkpoint in order. If you take a wrong turn or mess up in some way, you can respawn your vehicle on the last checkpoint you passed. There is a large selection of races for cars, boats, and helicopters - you can choose laps and vehicle class/type. This mode has two sub-modes, Free Race and Cannonball Run.

Free Race

Point-to-point races. First one to reach the end point wins.

Cannonball Run

Races where you have to traverse several checkpoints any way you can.

GTA Race

Similar to the orthodox Race, but with the added element of combat. Race and fight your way through the checkpoints in order and then hit the finish, but this time you can also pick up the weapons spawned en route to help take out your opponents. You can also exit the vehicle during the road races. The party leader can select what kind of vehicles to race, so the game can be limited to just sports cars, vans, trucks, or motorcycles for example.

Party Mode

If you're playing with a group of friends, Party Mode is a great way to keep everyone together. Players can choose to engage in an 8-player Party Mode wherein a Host can at any point select from a range of the other different game modes and then all players in the party will switch over to that newly selected mode of play. This is an easy way to corrall all your friends and keep them together for a series of multiplayer gameplay modes. For convenience, players are initially spawned next to cool vehicles, helicopters, or weapons so that they can get right into some action.

Extra Notes

In Race and GTA Race modes, the host decides which vehicles are involved as well as the number of laps to be played. The race itself involves shooting and throwing molotov cocktails from the window. If your opponents get careless, you can even steal their cars.

Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, on the other hand, has the host choosing how many pedestrians will be in the game, the amount of traffic, whether police intervention will be available or not, and the type of weapons that can be picked up.

Cops n Crooks has one team playing as cops while the other takes the role of the criminals. The cops must stop the criminals from escaping and can monitor the locations of the criminals on their GPS systems. The criminals, on the other hand, don't know where the cops are making it a pretty exciting match for them.

In Mafia Work and Team Mafia Work, players are given various orders from Kenny Petrovic to take out certain individuals. The players have to accomplish this before others are beat them to it.

Host Options

  • Turning cops on and off
  • Turning pedestrians on or off
  • Adjusting density of traffic
  • Adjusting weather options
  • Adjusting time of day
  • Picking what radio station plays during the game
  • Weapons selection and layout
  • Adjusting HUD to reveal/hide enemy locations
  • Speech settings – Teammates only

Leveling Up

When you play ranked matches, the money you earn goes towards a grand total that determines your level, and leveling up unlocks new clothing options.

  • Level 1: $1,000
  • Level 2: $10,000
  • Level 3: $50,000
