Weapons

Most of the weapons from Halo 2 return in Halo 3.

Some of the weapons have different ammunition requirements in multiplayer and campaign modes. For example the plasma sword disappears after a certain number of hits in campaign mode, but in multiplayer it can be used for an infinite number of hits.

Covenant plasma weapons do well defeating shields, while human projectile weapons do more damage. A common tactic is dual wielding one of each. Take out an opponent's shield with the Covenant gun, then finish him with the human weapon.

Pistol

The pistol is a good short range weapon, against Grunts or if you can land headshots, but isn't ideal against harder enemies like Brutes. The pistol does well when dual wielded with another weapon like the plasma rifle. Has a 12 round magazine,

SMG

The SMG
The SMG

The SMG, or submachine gun, has short range and each round does only moderate damage. It does have a high rate of fire and reloads quickly. This weapon can be dual wielded. For best accuracy keep bursts short, especially when dual wielding. The side mounted magazine holds 60 rounds.

Assault Rifle

This weapon was in Halo 1, but didn't appear in Halo 2. Bigger than the SMG, but smaller than the battle rifle, it is best used at close and medium ranges. Holds 32 rounds. It has an electronic display at the top rear of the rifle showing the amount of ammunition left.

Battle Rifle

This rifle has a scope and a three round burst ability. It is very useful in campaign mode, but its low damage makes it less effective in mulitplayer. The scope is engaged by pressing down on the right analog stick. It has a 36 round magazine.

Shotgun

A slow firing but devastating close range weapon. Very useful against the flood in campaign mode. Holds 8 rounds.

Sniper Rifle

Holds four rounds. The scope has two zoom settings: five times and ten times. When using the sniper rifle, it's important to aim for the head.

Rocket Launcher

Does more damage than the Brute shot, but only carries 2 shots. Use it against vehicles in campaign mode or for one shot kills in multiplayer. The rocket launcher no longer has a tracking ability.

Spartan Laser

Outstanding against vehicles, it does the most damage of any weapon in the game. There is a five second delay between activating and firing this weapon, which makes it hard to hit troops on foot or moving objects. When the beam hits something it continues through the target. It is possible to destroy more than one target (even vehicles) if they are lined up. Holds five shots.

Plasma Pistol

This pistol does little damage, and has a slow rate of fire. Its only redeeming feature is that it can be charged. Hold down the trigger for a second or two to charge it. Release the trigger to fire. A fully charged pistol shot should remove any opponent's shield. This weapon can be dual wielded, try the magnum pistol or the SMG. Remove your opponent's shield with the plasma pistol charge shot, then finish them with the human weapon.

Plasma Rifle

The plasma rifle doesn't use ammunition, but it can overheat. You can dual wield this weapon.

Brute Spiker

Holds 40 spikes. You can dual wield this weapon.

Needler

The needler is one of the more unusual weapons in the game. It fires crystals that slowly fly to the target. The slow speed of the projectiles is compensated by the homing capability of the crystals. Fire in bursts to do enough damage to kill. Holds 30 crystals. Unlike Halo 2, you cannot dual wield this weapon.

Carbine

Similar to the battle rifle, the carbine has a good combination of range, damage, and rate of fire. It has a scope and holds 36 rounds.

Brute Shot

A grenade launcher-like weapon, very good against powerful enemies like Brutes. It has a bayonet for more effective melee attacks. It holds 8 rounds.

The Fuel Rod Cannon

The fuel rod cannon shoots slow moving but powerful rounds. It is very effective against vehicles or powerful enemies. It does not have a tracking ability. Found only in campaign mode. Similar to the rocket launcher, it does less damage but holds more ammunition (five rounds).

Beam Rifle

The beam rifle has a scope, long range, and does high damage. Equivalent to the human sniper rifle, it holds more ammunition but does less damage.

Mauler

Similar to a shotgun, best used at close range. You can dual wield this weapon.

Energy Sword

The Covenant energy sword.
The Covenant energy sword.

This melee weapon, sometimes called a plasma sword, does considerable damage. The lunge attack is particularly powerful. It has a limited number of charges in both campaign and multiplayer. These charges are only used up with killing an opponent, damaging an opponent does not use charges. The Right trigger is used for lauching at enemies while (B) is used as a faster but non-launching attack can be used as a couter during sword fights.

Gravity Hammer

A devastating melee weapon, the gravity hammer is also one of the most fun. Not only can it be used to smash opponents, but you can also use it like a baseball bat to swat away grenades. It has only a limited number of charges.

Sentinel Beam

Found in campaign and multiplayer, they drop from destroyed Forerunner Sentinels. You'll have to keep the beam on target for a second or so to destroy your target. They cannot be reloaded.

Frag Grenade

A basic grenade: you throw it and it explodes. It has a larger blast area than other types of grenades, which make it well suited to taking out large groups of closely spaced enemies. When thrown it bounces, and can be bounced around corners.

Only two of each type of grenade can be carried.

Plasma Grenade

The plasma grenade, sometimes called a sticky grenade, sticks to enemies and explodes a few seconds after it lands. It has a smaller blast radius than the frag grenade, but does more damage. It's best used against hard to shoot single targets. They also work great against bosses like Hunters and Sentinel Enforcers. They do not stick to shields.

They glow brightly before they explode, and are easy to avoid if thrown on the ground.

When stuck with a grenade, enemies sometimes charge in an attempt to kill you in the explosion.

Spike Grenade

This grenade looks like a stick or club with spikes coming out of it. When thrown it sticks to objects like the plasma grenade. When it explodes, it does so in a directional cone.

Incendiary Grenade

These grenades create a pool of flame that damages anything in it, or that walks into it. They are most commonly used by Brutes.

Support Weapons

Support weapons are a new addition to the Halo series. These are heavy weapons that prevent the user from throwing grenades or engaging in melee combat. When using these weapons, the game changes to the third person point of view.

Flamethrower

The flamethrower shoots a cone of fire, burning everything in the area. When using the flamethrower, it is important not to walk into the flames because they can hurt or kill the wielder. Excellent anti-flood weapon.

Missile Pod

Primarily an anti-vehicle weapon, these missiles can track enemy vehicles. Holds eight missiles.

Machine Gun

This is the gun on the Warthog, carried by a player. Great for killing large numbers of enemies or for suppressive fire. Carries 200 rounds.

Plasma Cannon

Similar to the machine gun, but it fires plasma. Also carries 200 shots.

Equipment

Equipment is new to the Halo series. Deploy a piece of equipment with the X button. Only one piece of equipment can be carried at a time.

Bubble Shield

When deployed the bubble shield creates an orange dome around the user that is impenetrable to weapons. Individuals and vehicles can pass through it.

Power Drainer

A thrown device, this interferes with all power systems. The effect is any nearby shields will be shut down. Anyone near an active power drainer is highly vulnerable to any type of weapon.

It also shuts down any vehicle that gets too close to it.

Radar Jammer

Interferes with HUDs and radars.

Portable Gravity Lift

When deployed it creates a gravity elevator players can use to get to any area above them.

Trip Mine

This is a land mine. It will explode when anyone, even teammates or the person who deployed it, enters the blast radius.

Flare

The flare blinds anyone near it when it goes off. The effect is similar to a flashbang grenade in other games.

Regenerator

This quickly restores the shields of anyone in the effective radius. An active regenerator can be identified by a bright green glow.

Players in a regeneration area can still be killed, so long as they are hit with enough damage in a short period of time.

Deployable Cover

This is a shield that rests on the ground. It is impenetrable to all weapons shot at it. A person behind the shield can shoot through it with guns, but not plasma weapons.

Automated Turret

These are auto targeting guns. When deployed they will shoot any enemies they see. They are found only in campaign mode.

Cloaking

This renders the user invisible. It is similar in function to active camouflage in Halo 1 and 2.

Invincibility

This is a super shield that makes the user immune to any sort of damage for a limited period of time. It is available only in campaign mode.
