Chapter 1: Two Rivers
The School
The game opens with your character in a school run by Master Li. You'll be asked to a friendly sparing session, which is really an in-game combat tutorial. Once you've finished with that take a few moments to explore around some.
Be sure to visit:
- Smiling Mountain – he'll arrange sparing matches and have items for sale
- Gao the Lesser – overall jerk, but important plot development
- Master Li – your teacher and head of the school
- Dawn Star – will join you as a follower
- Various scrolls and books, which are scattered throughout the game. By reading sets of these you'll learn new styles and techniques.
In Master Li's house, open a container to find a Red, a Yellow, and a Blue Lion Figurine. Take these to the nearby altar.
- Approach the altar
- Place the blue figurine on the altar
- Place the red figurine on the altar
- Place the yellow figuring on the altar
- Leave
You'll get a silver coin. Take the coin to the tomb behind the house and offer it as a gift. You'll get the Lion's Head Token. Go back to the altar in the house.
- Approach the altar
- Place the Lion's Head Token in the lion's mouth
- Place the blue figurine on the altar
- Place the yellow figurine on the altar
- Remove the blue figurine from the altar
- Place the red figurine on the altar
- Remove the yellow figurine from the altar
- Place the blue figurine on the altar
You'll receive a new technique: Gaze of the Lion.
After speaking to enough people, you'll learn of an attack on the nearby village.
Head out the school gate and toward the village of Two Rivers. Just outside the gate you'll encounter some bandits.
Head into the village, and find Gujin. He'll give you a weapon if you ask for it. He'll also give you a weapon style.
Read the scroll. If you've read all the scrolls in the school, you should get a technique for completing a book set.
In the village is a villager being attacked by four bandits. Attack and defeat the bandits. Nearby is a basket with 200 silver. If you are following the Way of the Open Palm, hold on to this silver because you'll want to give it back to the villagers later. If you're Closed Fist, you're probably best off spending it on something Smiling Mountain has for sale.
Head toward the beach, fighting bandits as you go.
At the beach you'll see the bandits kill some villagers with a cannon. This is the first big battle of the game. You'll have to fight two waves of bandits, and a third wave of spirit attackers. Weapons are useless against spirits, so switch to a non-weapon style.
Once you've defeated them, on your way back to the school be sure to speak to all the villagers you can.
You'll encounter three drunks. If you're Open Palm say things that don't lead to a fight. You'll get Open Palm credit, and you'll have to fight them anyway.
Head back to the school and speak to Smiling Mountain. He'll let you spar against opponents for experience. If you beat all the available opponents, you'll get the Lessons of the Forge technique.
Speak to Gao, then Master Li. Agree to spar Gao. Speak to Master Li again, this time about the spirit cave.
Inside the spirit cave, head forward to a pillar, where you can pick up the Dragon Amulet and a Flawed Warrior Gem. As soon as you pick them up, you'll be attacked by three spirits. Use an unarmed style against them.
Go to the north part of the cavern and hold up the amulet to open the passage.
Continue on, and you'll encounter the Old Master. Speak to him, but you'll have to fight him at the end of the dialogue. He has two other spirits to help him.
You'll then have a conversation with a female spirit. She'll give you the choice of either fire (Dire Flame style) or ice (Ice Shard style). When you're done speaking with her, don't enter the portal that appears. Instead, loot all the items in the room, then use the portal.
Speak to the people in the school and village about Dawn Star.
If you took the basket with 200 silver during the bandit attack, you'll find a villager who lost his savings in the attack. Give him the money back to earn some Open Palm credit.
You'll be attacked by six of Gao's men near the village gate. Defeat them.
The village guard will tell you that he saw Dawn Star. Head out of the town into the marshes.
The Marshes
As you explore you'll encounter Merchant Hind. Before you speak to him, you'll have to fight three bandits.
You'll encounter Sagacious Zu, who will join your party.
Be sure to find and defeat the Demon Toad, you'll get the Demon Toad style for doing so.
Find Gao, fight and defeat him.
Head over to the flyer and fly it to Two Rivers. There will be a mini-game.
You'll land on the beach. Fight your way up to the school. This will be a long series of fights, so be sure to use the spirit fountains and focus shrines in the village.
At the school, you'll have to fight two waves of Gao's men.
You'll then hop back in the flyer. Here you'll have a choice to evade or attack your enemies. Choose attack to play the flight combat mini-game or evade to skip it.
You'll be taken to Tien's Landing.
