Defensive Formations
4-3 Set
- Works Best Against: Inside running plays
Your success with this set will depend a lot on your MLB (usually your quarterback) having a high awareness rating to make last-second adjustments.
3-4 Set
- Works Best Against: Outside running plays
This defense includes four LBs, three DLs, and four DBs. The better your four LBs, the faster this defense will be. Your defensive linemen will be preventing the offensive line from getting at your linebackers. Though this set works great against outside runs, it really falls short on inside runs, so you'll probably need to pick a lot of blitzes.
46 Set
- Works Best Against: Passing plays
While the 46 Sets works best against a passing offense, it also works well with running plays because it sets eight men in the box. With the 46 Set, you'll have many defenders blitzing the opposition, easily disrupting their passing plays.
Nickel Set
- Works Best Against: Passing plays
The Nickel Set is used to put defenders on all of the opposition's receivers. Watch for the offense to use sets of three, four, or five wide receivers to know when to bring in the Nickel defense.
Dime Set
- Works Best Against: Passing plays
Watch for the offense to use four five wide receivers, then use the Dime Set to defend against it. This puts six DBs, four D-Linemen, and an LB in position to stop a pass cold. Note, though, that using this defense leaves you wide open to a running play!
Dollar Set
- Works Best Against: Passing plays
The Dollar Set is very similar to the Dime Set, except one more linebacker is added to replace the WDT to give the defense slightly more speed.
Quarter Set
- Works Best Against: Passing plays
The Quarter Set is best used against multiple receiver sets like the Shotgun 5 Wide and others like it. Your seven defensive backs, three down linemen, and one linebacker will make it very difficult for the offense to make a pass completion. If, however, you use this against a running play, you can say your prayers, because you will have one heck of a time trying to stop the run.
Goal Line
- Works Best Against: Short yardage situations
Use the Goal Line formation when the offense is close to your end zone, or when the remaining yardage is short. Five defensive linemen and two linebackers will line up along the line of scrimmage, bolstered by a safety play and another linebacker behind the interior DLs.
