Boosted Start

Before every race it is possible to get an extra boost off the starting line. Here's how to get it: During the opening countdown, press and hold the Accelerate Button just after the 2 count. If done correctly, you'll rocket off the starting line, giving you an early lead over the rest of pack (or at least anyone who doesn't know this trick). The better your timing, the better your boost.

Do not simply hold the Accelerate Button for the entire countdown. Pressing and holding too early will make you stall-out at the start of the race. With a little practice, you will be boosting off the starting line of every race.

Avoid Pow Block

This is easy, when you see the pow block icon just begins to do tricks, you'll be affected by the pow, but you'll just do a 360°, and return automaticaly on the road, with, close, the same speed you have, before you get affected by the pow.

Power Sliding

  • This is for people playing on the Manuel setting only. Players who select Automatic will not get any boosts.

The Power Sliding technique is your key to winning. Executing Power Slides will give you the speed boost you need to help win races. Press and hold the Drift Button (B on the Wiimote/Steering Wheel) as you round corners. Your kart will hop a little and go directly into a slide in the direction you are turning. Keep holding the button and know that you can still control the direction of your kart in mid slide. Maneuver yourself around the corner and when you see Blue Sparks shoot from your back tires, release the Drift Button to receive a speed boost. Both karts and bikes and preform this boost.

Karts however can get a larger boost. While in a kart, if you can hang in a Power Slide long enough after the Blue Sparks appear they will change to Yellow Sparks. Once your kart is shooting Yellow Sparks, let go of the Drift Button and you will receive an even bigger boost.

You should start learning how to Power Slide from the very beginning. Each kart and bike will handle Power Sliding slightly differently. It's a necessary technique to take home the gold trophies in the 100cc and 150cc cups, plus it just looks cool.

Drafting

Drafting was introduced in Mario Kart DS. It makes a welcome return here. This is another great way to get some speed boosts. Follow directly behind another racer. You will begin to see blue streak lines appear on the screen. Stay behind them for a few more seconds until suddenly your vehicle has a large circle of streaks in front of it, like hyper-speed. As soon as these appear you will receive a speed boost which will even enable you to knock the racer in front of you to the side.

On the opposite side of this. If you know people are tailing directly behind you, keep swerving from left to right to prevent them from drafting you.

Wheelies

  • Only bikes can perform these.

One of the bike's biggest advantages is their ability to perform Wheelies and get the speed boost from it whenever they want. Shake the Wiimote upwards to pull the front of your bike up and perform a wheelie. The wheelie's boost it gives you is relevant to the speed you are going at the start of the wheelie. During a wheelie while you are accelerating to top speeds will not help you that much. However, doing a wheelie after getting a speed boost can extend the boost significantly.

The one draw back to the wheelie maneuver is your steering capabilities. Being that your front tire is off the ground you will not be able to change the direction of your bike that much. You will be able to lean the driver which will slowly move your to one side or the other. If you are ever in trouble during a wheelie, know that by tapping the Draft Button or shaking the Wiimote downwards you will disengage the wheelie and regain full control of your bike once again.

Tricks & Stunts

Aside from the bikes, the other newest addition to the Mario Kart series here is the ability to perform death-defying tricks in midair and then receive a speed boost once you hit the ground again. Stunts can be performed off any ramp or half-pipe or any hill, bump or steep drop that gives you just a little air. The trick is to shake the Wii Wheel (or press down on the D-pad) the moment you are being leaving the ground or ramp. Your character will then perform a trick in mid-air and as soon as you land the speed boost will kick in.

Be on the lookout for anything that can be used to get some air.

General Driving Tips

  • If you're in first place, the rest of the pack is going to be gunning for you, i.e. firing items at you. To help prevent a rear attack, make sure to drag an item behind you as often as you can so that it takes the brunt of an attack, instead of your vehicle.
  • LEARN the tracks and item placements and it will save you time getting into a position to pick up the boxes.

Tricks may be a new feature but if you can use them in the right place you can boost past the opposition. However don't use them at every opportunity, a lot of the jumps will take you away from the fastest route so only use them when you need to.
