Mass Effect is an action role-playing game set in the distant future. Humanity has discovered multiple alien civilizations, faster than light travel, and technology so advanced it borders on magical.

The protagonist is Commander Shepard. This character is customizable and players have the option of choosing the character's appearance, background, and even gender. Because the character's first name can be changed, he or she is usually just referred to as Shepard.

The first decisions a player encounters involve character creation. Of these, the choice of class is the most important. Players then begin their journey to save the galaxy in the main mission, but they can also perform side missions to improve their skills and equipment, or just explore the planets of the galaxy.

Players control not only Shepard, but also a team of two other characters. Effectively issuing orders and using teammates is a key part of the game.

The RPG mechanics are similar to the earlier BioWare games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.
