Bring Down the Sky

Overview

As the first ever downloadable content for Bioware’s Mass Effect, Bring Down The Sky introduces a new alien race called the Batarians, offers a previously uncharted world to explore and new achievements to unlock. Playtime is estimated at around 90 minutes and the content costs 400 MS Points (around $5 US).

Once downloaded, you can view the expansion pack from the main Mass Effect menu by accessing the Downloadable Content option. Here you will see the following description:

Batarian extremists have hijacked a mobile asteroid station. From the galaxy map, travel to the Exodus cluster. Enter the Asgard system and land on Asteroid X57 to stop it before it crashes into Terra Nova.

Note: You can view the credits for the downloadable content by pressing “A” on this screen.

Walkthrough

As noted in the description, you need to access the galaxy map from within the Normandy and travel to the Exodus cluster. Then you must enter the Asgard system and Asteroid X57. The description of Asteroid X57 is as follows:

X57 is a metallic asteroid, originally located at the trailing Lagrange point of the gas giant Borr. With the increased development on Terra Nova, a new orbital port facility was necessary. Due to a shortage of funding, it was decided to “mine out” X57, using the recovered resources to finish out the interior for habitation. The asteroid was decelerated from Borr’s orbit using fusion torches, allowing it to fall into the orbit of Terra Nova. Recently, communications with the engineering team on X57 have been lost. The fusion torches have reignited, and the asteroid is accelerating towards Terra Nova.

Landing and Tower 1

After a brief cutscene, you land on Asteroid X57 inside the MAKO. Head in the direction of the objective while avoiding or eliminating the turrets. Once you enter the building at the objective point, opening the only other door besides the exit will initiate a cutscene where you are introduced to the Batarians. Stay on your toes…this will start a battle sequence. The room is filled with both Bararian Troppers and Batarian War Beasts so use cover behind crates to eliminate long-range targets while taking out the closest threats.

Once you defeat all of the enemies, head towards the back of the room to pick up additional grenades (loose) and various weapons (from the storage locker - easy decription). Then proceed up the steps and access the room to the immediate left. Here you will find the Torch Control. Disable it. This will initiate another cutscene filling you in on what’s going on with the Asteroid.

Proceed back towards the entrance. You will be come across a scared worker named Simon who gives additional insight into completing the mission and offers up a side quest. Once you exit the building it’s probably best to eliminate the remaining turrets if you didn’t get them on the way in as to avoid critical damage.

Tower 2

Head towards the next way point, eliminating the turrets, and avoiding the ground mines that will damage your MAKO. Proceed on foot towards the next building, being cautions to avoid proximity mines. You will be greeted by a group of Batarian Troppers. Use cover and take them out before entering the building. You can disarm the blasting caps near the entrance to this facility.

There are several Rocket Drones and Batarian Troopers awaiting you once you enter the main room of the facility. Be cautious and use cover. This battle can be somewhat tough depending on your level and character skill sets/weapons so watch out. Once all the enemies are downed, scan the perimeter for items and then proceed upstairs and to the left to disarm the second Fusion Torch Control.

After the cutscene, grab the MediGel at the end of the upstairs hall, exit the building, enter your MAKO and head towards the third and final Fusion Torch Control.

Tower 3

The outside of this tower is again guarded with numerous turrets. Be cautions and take them out. Once inside you will come across a large group of Batarian Troopers and Batarian War Beasts. Use cover and the explosive fusion and cyro containment cells to your advantage to destroy them. Once you eliminate all hostiles, search the perimeter for items and then proceed upstairs to disarm the third Fusion Torch Control. Once you go downstairs you will be approached by Charn, the Batarian leader of the operation. You can use your powers of persuasion to talk him out of an attack, allow him to leave peacefully and gain the access card to the main facility. Alternatively, you can attack him and find the access card once defeated, however, multiple accompanying enemies, including Batarian shock troopers, will make the battle difficult.

Main Facility

After shutting down the Fusion Torches and acquiring the access card, head towards the main facility. The outside is heavily guarded by both fixed and mobile turrets so be careful in your approach. Upon entering the main facility you can replenish both grenades and Medi-Gel just to your left past the first door. Next, go upstairs and equip plenty of defensive biotics before being attacked by a room full of defense drones and Batarian Troopers.

After you clear the room you will be approached by Balak, the main Batarian behind the terrorist attack. He tells you that he is fleeing the asteroid and that if you follow him he will blow up the room full of prisoners. You will ultimately be given the chance to attack him or let him go to save the hostages. Upon successful completion of the mission and redirection of the asteroid you unlock achievement points and be given the option of selecting an item as a reward during a conversation with the scared worker Simon, including the extremely rare and prized Omni-tool, Savant IV, if you have sufficient powers of persuasion.

Transmission Tower

Towards the middle of the map you will find a broken Transmission Tower on top of a hill. Using decryption you can fix the tower and restore a data link between it and several survey stations in the area. These survey station locations will now be show on your map. There are three in all

Survey Station 1

Inside Survey Station 1 you will find an Aid Station containing Medi-Gel and the dead body of C.Hymes which has severe burns and shows signs of major concussive trauma. On the nearby desk you can listen to an audio message station log left by Hymes during her final moments.

Survey Station 2

Inside Survey Station 2 you will find an Aid Station, hardened crate and final entry logged by Chief Surveyor R. Montoya. In the log you read that Montoya armed the defense drones before leaving the station. Once you exit out of the text you will be attacked by these defense drones. After taking out the defense drones you will notice footprints on the right side of the station facing the front. After you examine these footprints “Body of R. Montoya” becomes a waypoint on your map. Go there. You will find that he was shot dead by a sniper, but still possesses an Omni-tool that you can acquire.

Survey Station 3

Upon approaching Survey Station 3 you will find a technician kit and the dead body of G. Mendel who was badly beaten before being killed with a pistol shot in the back of the head at close range. Inside the Survey Station you will find an Aid Station containing Medi-Gel and the final entry of the station logs on the computer.
