Like most Mega Man games there is no set path to follow in which level is attempted first. This walkthrough is how I would go through the game since I see it as the most efficient way, you can follow how each level is done but you don't have to play them in the order I do. After defeating 2 of the Mavericks, the X-Hunters will reveal themselves and locate themselves at any of the stages, I'll tell you where the entrance is during the stage walkthrough but the strategy to beating the X-Hunters will be in a separate section.

Contents

First Stage

This is a very simple stage to let you get use to how to control Mega Man, moving is done with the D-pad, jumping is done with the B button, shooting the X Buster is done with the Y button, to charge up the X Buster for a more powerful blast is done by holding down the Y button until Mega Man glows, dashing is done with the A button or by press forward twice quickly and the L and R buttons are used to cycle through the weapons obtained from each boss. On this level you do not have any special weapons. The first stage is fairly straight forward, you'll fight a giant robot at the end of this stage just keep taking shots at his head and he'll be done quickly.

Dinosaur Tank

Boss: Wheel Gator
Power-ups: Arm Upgrade and Heart Tank

I usually attempt Wheel Gator first even though you aren't able to obtain any special power-ups attempting this stage right away, his Spin Wheel weapon is needed to uncover power-ups in the other stages.

Arm Upgrade

After heading inside the tank and climbing down two ladders and heading to the right you'll notice there is a gap up above you, this is where your Arm Upgrade is held you can obtain this power-up easily if you have the Leg Upgrade, all you have to do is hold on to the far right wall jump your way up and air dash to the left wall, another method, if you do not have the Leg Upgrade, is using the Strike Chain to pull yourself over to the left wall.

Heart Tank

You can continue going through the level, once you reach the part where you will need to ditch your drill armor suit and head up a ladder, you'll see a set of spikes to the left on the ledge above the spikes is a Heart Tank, you can obtain this if you have the Leg Upgrade, Arm Upgrade as well as the Speed Burner weapon from Flame Stag. What you'll need to do is stand on the ledge to the right, charge up Speed Burner and air dash over to the other ledge and let go of the charge to continue dashing towards the Heart Tank.

A method of obtaining the Heart Tank without any prerequisite upgrades is to jump in front of the enemy positioned further to the right while it is at the edge of the platform in order to lure it into shooting projectiles towards the Heart Tank. Follow the bullets as far as they will go; you must jump into them as soon as they fade away to take damage. This will induce invincibility for a short while, which will grant you enough time to quickly dash and climb the spikes to reach the Heart Tank.

X-Hunter Entrance

When you come to the part of the stage where you're outside again and have to drop down, if you stick close to the left when you're dropping off the ledge you will find the entrance to the X-Hunter battle, you'll only be able to go through this entrance if one of the X-Hunters is on this stage. You can keep on going through the rest of the stage till you reach Wheel Gator.

Wheel Gator

Weakness: Strike Chain
Weapon Power-up: Spin Wheel

If you have the Strike Chain weapon you can continue hitting him with it and he won't be able to do anything since each attack will stun him for a bit. If not you will need to avoid the saws that he will throw at you by standing on the other side of the stage and going under them when they bounce up, all while taking shots at him, try to charge up your X Buster for a shot and then take little pot shots at him until he goes under the oil. Once Wheel Gator dives under the oil he will start throwing wheels that ride on the oil and travel up one of the walls, you will need to scale one of the walls and jump over the wheels when they approach you. He will also start shooting blue flame shots from his mouth, you will need to jump over these and take shots at him when he stops shooting them.

Desert Base

Boss: Overdrive Ostrich
Power-Ups: Leg Upgrade and Heart Tank

X-Hunter Entrance

At the beginning of this stage if you keep going and use the Spin Wheel on the dirt wall behind the first scorpion robot, this will lead you to an entrance to an X-Hunter battle.

Heart Tank

Continuing on you will get to use the bike that Mega Man was riding from the game intro, the bike has the same controls as Mega Man except for charging. You will need to shoot down the ramps and use boost on the very last ramp to clear the giant pit, after this you will need to continue with the bike to obtain a Heart Tank. With the bike you will need to boost on the first ramp inside the compound so that you can reach the next ledge after this you'll see a row of spikes, jump onto the spikes. You will need to turn around right before grabbing the large life container to be able to grab the Heart Tank without hitting the spiked wall, though you could just run into the spikes and redo the level. Though this will change the stage that each X-Hunter was previously occupying. After grabbing the Heart Tank and turning around you can ditch the bike.

Leg Upgrade

After grabbing the Heart Tank move down to the two scorpions before falling down the pit after them try to dash jump over to the far right wall, use the spin wheel and grab the Leg Upgrade. Continue on and jump on the rocket. Now after the rocket blows up you will face Overdrive Ostrich.

Overdrive Ostrich

Weakness: Crystal Hunter
Weapon Power-Up: Sonic Slicer

If you have the Crystal Hunter weapon you can use this to make quick work of him just hit him with this while he's jumping into the air to call down the slices. If you do not have the Crystal Hunter you will need to avoid the slices that come down from the sky as well as the ones he'll throw at you, all the while taking shots at him. If he leaves the screen and you see a small silhouette of him in the background be prepared for him to either dash back into the screen trying to ram you or jumping back into the screen. His dashes aren't that hard to avoid if you stick to the higher ground and his jumps can be avoided by staying on the lower ground. After defeating him you can now head back to the Dino Tank and obtain the Arm Upgrade if you haven't yet.

Weather Control

Boss: Wire Sponge
Power-Ups: Heart Tank and Sub Tank

This is probably the easiest stage in the game so if you are having trouble with the first two I mentioned you can try starting this one first so you can obtain the Strike Chain to defeat Wheel Gator.

Heart Tank

Right at the start of the stage climb up the left wall all the way to find a hidden Heart Tank.

Keep going forward blasting the enemies that get in your way, the orbs that you see will change the weather according to what weapon you use on it, at this time you don't have any weapons that will do anything so just continue on.

Sub Tank

Once you reach the part of the stage where you see vertical platforms moving up and down and the weather has just changed to rain, jump onto the first platform and air dash or dash jump to the ledge to the left of the platform. Climb up and kill the robot frog sitting there and then air dash or dash jump to the log platform to the right. Stay on top of these logs and keep going forwards, you'll find a Sub Tank on the final platform.

X-Hunter Entrance

Continue on until you see the lift that keeps going up, underneath the lift and to the right is an entrance to an X-Hunter battle. After this you can continue going up the lift and continue on through the rest of the stage which is pretty much just blasting robots and jumping over pits.

Wire Sponge

Weakness: Sonic Slicer
Weapon: Strike Chain

Wire Sponge is the easiest boss in the game. If you have the Sonic Slicer you can just keep throwing these at him and he'll quickly die. If you don't have the Somic Slicer then you can just charge up and blast him while he's jumping around and keep jumping at times so that when he does try to hit you with his chain you can just dash right under it. He will pull himself up towards the ceiling at times and throw out little thorns you can just blast these with a charge to get rid of them. When his health is low he'll start to get mad and steam up, when he is red you won't be able to attack him so charge up and avoid the lightning that comes down and then blast him afterwards.

Under-Sea Base

Boss: Bubble Crab
Power-ups: Heart Tank and Sub Tank

Heart Tank

You'll start off heading into a cave and then underwater, when you reach a ledge you'll see a large robot fish appear. Instead of killing the fish, quickly dash underneath it and stay ahead of it till you reach a dead end. Climb up the right wall and near the top dash jump to the left of the screen and you will see some vertical platforms. Try to grab onto the platform and then when it reaches the top jump to the ledge on the right to reach a Heart Tank.

Sub Tank

Now drop back down and keep going forward you'll reach a part of the stage where you can see a large heath pack underneath the floor, here try to jump up and to the left to hit a wall and you'll see a Sub Tank sitting on a ledge. The easy way to obtain this is to actually defeat Bubble Crab and return to the stage charge up your Bubble Splash so that it turns into a shield and then jump up to get to the ledge. With the shield on you jump higher when in water.

X-Hunter Entrance

Now continue through the stage and follow the giant robot fish if you follow it all the way to the end it will end up docking and above it is the entrance to an X-Hunter battle.

If you don't follow the fish and just continue on you'll see some vertical platforms moving up and down. Jump on these and continue forward to reach a door that will drain away the water once entered and then proceed to fight Bubble Crab.

Bubble Crab

Weakness: Spin Wheel
Weapon Power-up: Bubble Splash

Bubble Crab isn't that difficult to defeat if you have the Spin Wheel, just first blast him with a charged Spin Wheel and then keep throwing Spin Wheels at him. He'll probably turn on his claws if you get too close but you can afford to take some damage as long as you get off a couple wheels. If you don't have the Spin Wheel you will have to avoid a number of his attacks. He'll attack you by shooting some bubbles at you, these bubbles can't go above the water level so if the water level is low just jump above it, if the water level is high then you'll have to jump over the bubbles. He'll also throw out bubble that float on top of the water, these bubbles will hurt you if you touch them as well as dropping mini bubble crabs for you to deal with. Most of the time I will try to jump above him to make him use his claws and then move away and blast him. Sometimes he'll have his bubble shield up which won't allow you to damage him but if you jump over him he'll take it down and use his claws and then you'll be able to blast him. If you force him to keep using his claws he won't use any other attacks and then reading his movements and taking him down becomes easier.

Volcano Zone

Boss: Flame Stag
Power-Ups: Heart Tank and Sub Tank

Sub Tank

You'll start this stage and head all the way to the right till you hit a wall. Climb up till you reach a ledge use the Strike Chain charged and with a dash jump to the left you'll reach another ledge that contains a Sub Tank. Alternatively you could keep climbing up the right wall till a beetle come down and then jumping on top of it will allow you to jump to the Sub Tank.

Heart Tank

You'll then enter a cavern where you'll have a race to the top because lava is rising up from underneath, on your way up you'll see a Heart Tank, to grab this quickly have the Strike Chain charged and then grab the Heart Tank and make a dash underneath the door.

X-Hunter Entrance

Then keep heading up and out, after jumping over some collapsing platforms you'll hit a wall keep climbing up till a beetle comes down make it break the wall open and then enter to find an entrance to an X-Hunter battle.

Then continue on to face Flame Stag.

Flame Stage

Weakness: Bubble Splash
Weapon Power-up: Speed Burner

If you have the Bubble Splash you can use that to quickly kill him, you can either charge the Bubble Splash and have it hit him or just stand next to him and keep blasting him with bubbles. If you don't have the Bubble Splash you'll have to avoid his charges. He will charge at you and jump up a wall, if he hits you he'll fly up with you and then slam you down into the ground. If you dodge it get ready for him to come back down and then whip fireballs at you, dodge these fireballs and blast him. Rinse and repeat and he'll be down for the count.

Robot Junkyard

Boss: Morph Moth
Power-ups: Heart Tank and Body Upgrade

Heart Tank

You'll start this stage and see a shield robot, you'll need Crystal Hunter for this part which requires you to knock away the shield and then use Crystal Hunter to freeze the robot. Jump on top of him and dash jump over to the far right wall and climb to the top, here you'll find a Heart Tank.

Body Upgrade

Drop back down and continue on, once you go past the two robots hanging from the ceiling and reach a small ledge use the Spin Wheel on the floor to the left of the ledge, it'll open a passageway to the Body Upgrade. After obtaining the Body Upgrade continue on through the level.

X-Hunter Entrance

After defeating the mini-boss robot you'll have to climb down a ladder, to your right you'll see a tunnel behind the first shield robot, destroy the robot and head behind him to find an entrance to an X-Hunter battle.

Continue along through the level, if you see the hopping bug robots, if you allow them to attach themselves to your head they will make you automatically jump, dash or shoot. They will only stay on your head for a little while before jumping off if you don't try to get them off, usually I find that the auto fire allows me to stop worrying about shooting for a little while. Next up is Morph Moth.

Morph Moth

Weakness: Speed Burner
Weapon Power-Up: Silk Shot

Morph Moth will take two forms, his first form is a spider like robot. If you have the Speed Burner weapon you can just charge that up and keep dashing into him. When his health is lower then 1/4, he will transform into a more moth looking robot. Again you can just use Speed Burner and dash into him a couple of times to kill him. If you don't have Speed Burner, when you're fighting against him in his spider form you will have to blast him while avoiding this pendulum motion, he'll also start throwing junk out of himself like a fountain at certain points after he's done doing that he'll drop from his string and move back and forth on the ground doing the same thing. Blast him when he's hanging from the string till he transforms. In his moth from he'll sprinkle some dust that will hurt you as well as fire a laser at you, just climb up the walls and try to dodge his lasers and blast him.

Central Computer

Boss: Magna Centipede
Power-Ups: Heart Tank and Sub Tank

The central computer level is probably one of the more difficult ones because of the falling blocks as well as the security system.

Heart Tank

Starting off try not to let the spotlight detect you, if it does it will drop the gray blocks down which won't really harm you too much but if they do fall you will miss your chance of obtaining a Heart Tank, if you make it through the first part without being hit by the spotlight you'll see a gray block attached to the ceiling and allowing you to jump to it and climb up the wall to reach a Heart Tank.

Sub Tank

When you get past the second group of 6 large blocks, you will need to charge up Speed Burner and do a dash jump off the ledge and burn dash into the wall and climb up to obtain a Sub Tank. Technically I believe you're suppose to jump on top of the large grey block that falls down and then ride it to the wall and then air dash up to grab the Sub Tank, which if you can make it on top of the block is an easier way of doing it.

X-Hunter Entrance

Next you'll fight a mini boss the wireframed sword, you'll have to hit the hilt of the sword to do any damage, the easiest way to defeat it is to charge up the silk shot and do a point blank shot on the hilt when the sword appears. Next you'll drop down a long tunnel where you'll probably get hit by a spot light but make sure it's the one that is in the middle, when you hit the floor start dashing to the right as quickly as possible, at the end you'll reach the X-Hunter entrance.

If you climb up the wall you'll find a tunnel to continue on and face another mini boss, just dodge his laser shots and blast him with some charged shots and he'll be dead soon. Move along through the rest of the falling blocks and reach Magna Centipede.

Magna Centipede

Weakness: Silk Shot Weapon Power-Up: Magnet Mine

Use your Silk Shot as soon as possible to blow away his tail, I really don't suggest facing against him without Silk Shot since without his tail you'll be able to defeat really easily. He'll teleport around and when he appears hit him with a Silk Shot and keep doing this while avoiding the ninja stars he throws at you when he appears. If you don't have Silk Shot what ends up happening is he'll either disappear and then his tail mines will surround you and rush at you or he'll do a magnet attack that pulls you towards him and then he drains your health. It's best avoiding those two attacks altogether by just getting Silk Shot before facing him.

Energen Crystal

Boss: Crystal Snail
Power-Ups: Heart Tank and Head Upgrade

Heart Tank

On this stage when you've reached the drill suit, turn around and fall down the last pit you crossed while moving towards the left. Then dash jump across the chasm and at the last moment bail from the suit to get to the ledge. Grab the Heart Tank and head back to the suit.

If the Body upgrade has already been obtained, you can use the Giga Crush attack once you've nearly reached the ledge to gain extra altitude and increase your chance of success.

X-Hunter Entrance

Make sure you don't lose the suit and keep heading all the way till you hit some purple ice, get out of the suit and allow the green ice to smash the purple one and then get back into the suit. Move forward and use the suit to jump up to the ledge, break the first 4 blocks of ice and get out of the suit and up on the ledge. You'll see a bunch of vertical platforms going up and down, at the top is the entrance to an X-Hunter battle.

Head Upgrade

Keep going you'll hit a mini boss battle against an eye robot in an ice cage, take out the Spin Wheel and attack him with it. Keep going down the icy slope and fall down the pit while holding onto the left wall, destroy the brains and you get the Head Upgrade at the end of the tunnel. Climb back up out of the pit and keep keep going to reach Crystal Snail.

Crystal Snail

Weakness: Magnet Mine
Weapon Power-Up: Crystal Hunter

Now when you fight him he'll go into his shell and try to ram you jump away when he flies at you and wait for him to reappear, when he does, hit him with a mine. This will knock him out of his shell, be careful since the moment he leaves his shell he'll fly across the screen dodge this and then dash into the shell to keep it moving. The best strategy is to keep the shell moving since Crystal Snail will try to get back into it and won't bother attacking you, you can then plant mines underneath where he's going to land while he's jumping around. If you don't have Magnet Mine this is going to be a much harder battle, he has a number of attacks, one is the shell smash explained earlier and another is he will throw bubbles at you usually 3 at a time, if you get hit by these it will freeze you and you'll then get rammed by his shell. When frozen you'll need to quickly hit Left and Right on the D-pad to get out of it. After damaging him a bit, he'll start using a time freeze which really just slows you down and then he can try to ram you with his shell again while you're slow. You'll have to blast him when he's not in his shell and try to dodge his bubbles at the same time. If you can follow the pattern in which he throws the bubbles you can avoid them by either scaling a wall and jumping over or by air dashing through them.

X-Hunters

There are 3 X-Hunters, Violen, Agile and Serges. The strategy for beating Violen will be the same the first and second time you meet them but Serges and Agile will be different.

Violen

Violen will be easier the second time facing him but the strategy isn't any different. When you first meet him on a Maverick stage he is in an open room, during the North Pole stage he will have blocks that appear and disappear. Violen has 3 attacks, his first attack is that he sends a large spiked ball at you that bounces all over the screen, the chain of the ball won't hurt you so getting hit by it is ok. His next attack is that he will fly above you and extend his arm and spray laser balls at you, these aren't that hard to dodge if you see the pattern. His last attack is he will extend his arm while standing and spray laser balls at you, you can dodge these by staying against a wall and avoiding them as they come. The easiest way to defeat Violen is if you have the Bubble Splash you can just charge it up and maintain the shield and stand right next to him. If you don't have the shield you'll just have to dodge his shots while charging up and blasting him a couple of times.

Serges

Maverick Stage

Serges will appear standing on a platform. His attacks will be that he'll move back and forth laying mines on the floor and at times will jump into the air and spin letting out a bunch of laser balls. The quickest way to defeat him is to use Silk Shot and have it fall down on his head. Serges seems to have a shield up around him but I believe if you shoot him in the head it'll usually hurt him.

North Pole

This time Serges will appear in some weird machine that has four guns on the front, what you should do is use Silk Shot charged up and blast the guns, this should only take a couple of Silk Shot hits to get rid of all 4. Next jump to the platform underneath Serges and use the Sonic Slicer charge it up and it should hit him every time. Now you should be able to destroy his 4 guns before they even get that many shots out so no use in trying to avoid them. Next when the guns are gone, Serges will start shooting out green balls that go out and break into a certain pattern. They will either break into a + or an X, you'll probably get hit by the X pattern at some point but as long as you don't fall into the spikes it won't kill you.

Agile

Maverick Stage

I think Agile in this stage isn't as hard as most people think, sure he's fast but if you force him to keep using that beam sword attack you can make short work of him. I don't really have a suggestion on what weapon to use since I just use the X-Buster, my strategy is to stay on the opposite side of the screen and keep jumping this will make him use his sword beam attack but aiming it a bit higher, when he shoots it you can dash under it and take a shot at him. He'll also charge at you swinging his sword at times, you'll have to dash over him and quickly drop so that he doesn't jump into the air to throw a sword attack. You may have to use a Sub Tank if things don't go so well. The biggest problem is his speed, if you can anticipate his attacks he's not that hard to beat.

North Pole

There's an easy way to kill him and a hard way, if you know how to get the Dragon Punch Upgrade you can simply use that a bunch of times of course only one is really needed. The hard way is you need to get up there and attack him. He appears as this ship above you dropping down platforms. The way I would defeat him is to charge up the Magnet Mine and climb up one way and blast him with it. His attacks are mainly missiles that he shoots down as well as dropping platforms on you.

Boss Stage

This stage will start off with you at the bottom of a tunnel, climb up and enter into the teleport tube. You'll be transported to a level with 8 teleporting tubes positioned around you. These tubes will each have one of the bosses you've faced in the game and following the same strategies as above you should be able to beat them easily. If you have the Dragon Punch upgrade, it'll be a piece of cake to finish these guys since no battle should last longer then a few seconds.

Final Stage

Entering this stage, you'll be back in the central computer. Continue along till you reach the wire frame sword area, instead of fighting the sword you'll see Sigma appear and he'll tell you he's brought a friend. Now if you've collected all the Zero parts, which you should have if you followed this guide, you won't have to fight him. Since a rebuilt Zero will come in and destroy the fake, of course if you didn't collect all the Zero parts you will have to fight Zero. After Zero appears he'll cut open a path for you to get to Sigma. Jump down the hole and you'll face off against him.

Sigma First Form

The first form of Sigma is him in his full body, he'll have a number of different attacks. He'll rush you with his claws and take swipes at you, you should just dash to a wall and climb up. This will force him to disappear, when he reappears he'll drop on you with his claws you'll have to be ready to dash away from this when he does it. His next attack consists of energy balls that come out and surround his body, these will then be sent flying at you. They're are two different types a blue one and a purple one, to dodge these just scale up a wall and air dash over them when they come at you. His next attack will be when he charges his two claws and throws a bar of electricity at you, you'll only be able to dash over this. At certain times Sigma will turn gold this will mean he is invincible and you won't be able to harm him, right after this he'll launch the electricity bar. To kill him you'll have to charge up and take shots at him when he comes back into the screen and drops on you. Dodge this, take a shot at him and quickly jump to the closest wall.

Sigma Second Form

His next form is he will appear as a large wire frame of his head. His attacks in this form is that he'll create random enemies for you to deal with while he's flying around shooting a giant beam at you. Most of the time you'll have to cling to a wall when he starts firing the beam and shoot him here. After his beam he'll throw out some enemies from his mouth and then charge at you. After this he'll head back to one side and throw his beam again. He'll usually continue using this pattern so once you get used to it, dispatching him won't be that difficult. When he gets to his final colour, he'll start disappear and reappearing right over you, if he gets you you'll be stuck inside him and will have to start firing to get out.
