Frequencies
Snake has several friends he can call on for advice or information using his radio. Here are the frequencies to contact them. Keep in mind that most of these have to be unlocked in the game before they can be used.
| Name | Frequency | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Col. Roy Campbell | 140.85 | Mission Commander. Provides mission support and objectives. Close friend of Solid Snake. |
| Naomi Hunter | 140.85 | Information about Foxhound. |
| Mei Ling | 140.96 | Saves games and gives information about the surrounding area. Along with Japanese Quotes |
| Natasha Romanenko | 141.52 | Information about weapons. Especially Nuclear Warheads. |
| Master Miller | 141.80 | Survival expert, information on plants and animals. Can help with mission information. |
| Meryl Silverburgh | 140.15 | Information on the base. Can help with mission information |
| Dr. Hal Emmerich | 141.12 | Also known as Otacon, information about the base and Metal Gear. |
| Deepthroat | 140.48 | A mysterious person who calls you at certain times during the game with information. You cannot call him. |
Dock
When you gain control of Snake, run right and get the tranquilizer gun. (M9) Then run to the left and crawl under the pipe. Run right and shoot the guard walking North. The guard walking west will head north, shoot him too when you can. When this is done, go to the northeastern part of the room and hide behind the forklift until the elevator comes. Once it comes, knock on the wall to get the guards attention and get on the elevator.
Heliport
After the many cutscenes, run to the right and up, against the helipad. Jump in the truck and get the SOCOM. Run up and right UNDER the surveillance camera and up the stairs. Run left and crawl into the air vent in the second gap in the long wall.
Tank Hangar
Climb through the vents until you reach an exit. Jump down through the hole and you'll get a call telling you to take the elevator down.
The metal grates here make noise when you walk on them, so move slowly if there are guards nearby. Be aware of the video camera, you'll have to wait for it to turn away before you can run for the stairs.
There is one guard patrolling near the elevator. When he's at the far end of his patrol you can safely enter the elevator.
Cell Area
Head south to a ladder. Climb it and go into the shaft. Go straight until you see an opening. You'll see a cut scene showing a woman doing sit-ups.
Easter Egg: if you leave and come back, you'll see her doing a different exercise each time. On the sixth time Snake comes back, the woman will be in her underwear.
Continue on to the next opening and you'll meet the DARPA Chief. He'll tell you about the Metal Gear, and give you a level one passkey. After the cut scene, you'll have to fight your way out of the area. After the fight you'll see another cut scene. When it's done, head to the elevator and go to level B2.
Armory
This level has trap doors in the floor. If you activate one of them, Snake will die. You can use the Thermal Goggles to spot them. If you do accidentally step on one, you'll hear a clicking sound. You have only a moment to get off the trap door before it opens.
Pick up the C4 and the grenades. Use the C4 on the doors to blast them open. In this room is a wall where you can plant more C4 to make another hole. Through this hole is a cut scene and a boss fight.
Boss: Revolver Ocelot
Near the guy who's tied up are several tripwires. If you cross one of these, both Snake and the hostage will die. The best way to avoid this is to stay far away from the hostage.
Revolver's strategy is to run around the room and shoot at you with his revolver. The best thing you can do is to try to dodge the shots as best you can and wait for him to reload. He only has six shots his gun, so he'll have to reload fairly frequently. When he does, aim for his head and shoot him with your SOCOM.
When his health reaches zero, another cut scene will start.
Speak to the hostage and you'll get a level 2 passkey. He also tells you that you can call Meryl, but he doesn't remember the frequency. He does tell you that its on the back of the CD. Snake hasn't found a CD in this game, the trick is that it's located on the back of the game CD case. To be more specific, it's printed on the Metal Gear Solid CD case. If you don't have the case, the frequency is 140.15. Call this frequency and speak to Meryl.
In the main room, the items you picked up earlier have respawned. You can also open one of the doors. On the other side are two laser tripwires. You can see them if you equip the thermal goggles or the cigarettes. Crawl under the lasers and you'll get the FA-MAS assault rifle.
Take the elevator to the first floor.
Tank Hangar
You could just head through this area, or you can stop off and grab some of the items here. You'll have to come back for the Mine Detector anyway, so you might as well get them now.
- Mine detector – second floor, across the catwalk.
- SOCOM suppressor – as you enter the hangar, go through the large door on the right. Kill the guard and take the box behind him.
- Box A – Second floor, first room on the right.
Canyon
Call from Deepthroat, who tells you to use the mine detector to find the claymore mines in the area.
You can also use the thermal goggles to find the mines. If you crawl over them you won't set them off, and you can recover them for use later.
Boss: Vulcan Raven and His Tank
Be sure you have some chaff grenades stashed away for this battle. They make this battle much easier.
Soon a tank will arrive and will start shooting at you. Use a chaff grenade to temporarily blind the tank. Run up and start throwing grenades. Aim for the gunner; try to get the grenade into the hatch that he's standing in. This will kill the gunner. He'll be replaced by another, who you should kill the same way.
Try laying down some C4 where the tank will roll over. When the Tank tread rolls over the explosive, it will damage the tread limiting the mobility of the tank, and increasing the ease of this fight. 2 explosions will make the tank stand still.
Be sure to keep running left and right to dodge the machine gun fire. As long as you're running perpendicular to the line of fire, he won't be able to hit you.
Once you kill that gunner, the tank will be defeated. You'll receive a passkey.
Nuclear Building
Head through the partly open door and you'll get a call telling you not to use weapons in this area. Also if you're spotted here poison gas will be released.
Take the elevator to B1. Get the Nikita missile launcher that's here and head back to the elevator. Take it to B2.
Carefully move forward and peek around the corner. Snake will see an electrified floor up ahead. He'll also notice an electrical box which presumably controls the floor.
Destroy the electrical box in the northwest corner with the Nikita. The Nikita is a guided missile, so as soon as you fire it, you'll see the missile's point of view. Steer the missile to the electrical box and blow it up.
The area you're in has been gassed, so go back to the elevator to get some air. Run back through the area to the third door you see. Inside is a gas mask. Go ahead and equip it and you'll be able to walk through the area.
Head forward until you encounter the next boss battle.
Boss: Ninja
Weapons are ineffective against the ninja. You must use punches and kicks to defeat him.
At the start of the fight, he'll turn invisible and challenge you to find him. Use the thermal goggles to see him; he'll be in one of the corners. Attack him as soon as you see him. If you wait too long he will attack you first. He will do this several times.
Eventually he will stop hiding and fight you directly.
Attack him with a punch/kick combination, then fall back. Further attacks do no damage against him until he recovers from the first combo.
When his health reaches zero, he will glow red and start teleporting around the room. Equip a gun and shoot him. Once you hit him, the fight will be over.
Chaff grenades will distract the Ninja, giving you time to attack. They work well, but you might want to save your chaff grenades for later bosses.
Mind Controlled Meryl
In the offices of the nuclear building you'll find a single guard. This is actually Meryl in disguise. Let her see you, and she'll run away. Follow her and you'll get some dialogue with her.
When you're done speaking to her, explore the offices and grab whatever items you find. As you're moving through the area, Meryl will begin acting strangely. When you reach the commander's room, she will act very strangely. When she pulls her gun on Snake, punch her until she's unconscious. Psycho Mantis, the next boss, will appear.
Boss: Psycho Mantis
Psycho Mantis has the ability to read minds and foresee how Snake will attack. To cancel this ability, you must switch controller inputs. That is, you must unplug your controller from the player-one port and plug it into the player-two port. This is neither a glitch nor an exploit; it is actually part of the game. This maneuver is not necessary if you are playing on a PC using the keyboard.
Mantis will also demonstrate his mind reading ability by mentioning what other video games you like to play. The game is reading your system's memory card (or other storage medium) for saved games.
He has the ability to go invisible, so use the thermal goggles to see him. The other way to do it is to switch to first person view. You'll actually see through Mantis' eyes. Move Snake into the field of view, then point your gun right at the "camera" and fire.
Toward the end of the fight, Mantis will waken Meryl and force her to try to shoot herself. You must punch her out (again) to keep her from killing herself.
Canyons
There are wolves in this area. The easiest way to get past them is with a stun grenade, then run for the gate.
Underground Passage
There are mines in this area, but Meryl knows where they are. If you follow in her footsteps you will be safe. The other way to do it is to crawl through the area. When crawling you won't set off mines.
At the far end of the area a cut scene begins. Meryl gets shot, and Snake needs to find a sniper rifle. There is one all the back at the hangar armory.
Boss: Sniper Wolf
Once you've returned with the sniper rifle, equip it and use the diazepam to steady your aim. You should be able to see Sniper Wolf easily. She tends to run from place to place, then sets up to shoot. Try to hit her as soon as she's done running so she doesn't have a chance to shoot you.
There are two points where sniper rifle ammo spawns in this area, if you're running low.
After the battle, be sure to save your game. Head down the passage and go through the door. Watch the cut scene.
Torture Room
Here Snake will be tortured. You can keep his life bar from going to zero by quickly tapping the action button. You can also submit and end the torture by pressing the select button.
Spoiler Alert Highlight to read.
This is an important scene in terms of the ending of the game. If you are able to make it through three sessions of torture, Meryl will be alive at the end of the game. If you submit, Meryl will be dead at the end of the game.
End Spoiler
Between each session of torture, you'll be returned to a prison cell. After the third session, you'll have a chance to escape. Octagon will bring you, of all things, ketchup. Use it and Snake will lay on the floor and spread it on his body. The guard will think he's dead and enter the cell.
You can also hide under the bed and the guard will think you've escaped and enter the cell.
Either way, when the guard enters the cell, attack him and escape. Head into the torture room to pick up your equipment. Once you have it, check your equipment slots. Ocelot may have placed a bomb in your equipment, so if there is one there, remove it.
If you are able to withstand five sessions of torture, the ninja will come and free you.
Make your way to the communication towers.
Communication Tower A
In the opening hallway, you will be spotted by a camera. This is part of the game script and is unavoidable. You must now fight your way through this area. Equip your assault rifle and start shooting. Make your way across this area to the ladder, and climb up it.
Once on the roof, you'll see a cut scene. After the scene, equip the rope and go to the edge of the tower. Snake will then repel down the side of the tower.
There are three guards on the far side of the bridge, so take them out before you get there. The Hind is on its way, so move as quickly as you can off the bridge and into tower B.
Communication Tower B
The elevator doesn't work, so head over to the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs a cut scene will happen. Head back up the stairs and to the elevator. Octagon will, after some dialogue, agree to fix the elevator, but it will take a while. Head back to the stairs and take them up to the roof.
There are several gun cameras in the stairwell. Use chaff grenades to disable them.
Take the ladder to the roof.
Boss: Liquid Snake in the Hind
Liquid Snake is in the Hind. The main dangers here are the helicopter's machine gun and its missiles. The best thing to do is to hide behind the block on the upper part of the roof. From here, pop up, lock on to the Hind, and shoot a Stinger. Pop back down before it starts shooting. If you pop up and it starts shooting at you right away, immediately duck down and wait for a good shot.
Once the helicopter has crashed, take the elevator down. You'll need to fight your way out of the tower.
Boss: Sniper Wolf (again)
As Snake enters the snowfield, he will be shot by a sniper. After a cut scene, run to the east. You'll see a ledge. Hide here, you'll be out of the sniper's line of fire.
You have several options to take out the sniper. The first is to use Nikita missiles. Without breaking cover launch one. Use it in first person mode to find the sniper and hit her. You'll need to hit her with several missiles.
Another way to do it is with your own sniper rifle. You should be able to see her laser sight if you look closely. Equip the PSG-1 and use diazepam to steady your aim. If you have trouble finding her, use your night vision goggles.
After you've killed Sniper Wolf, gather all the items and ammo from this area and go through the hallway to end this level.
Blast Furnace
Use the Nikita to destroy the crane.
Head downstairs.
If you want to grab the body armor, under the stairs is a small opening. Go through it as quickly as you can because the steam here will hurt you. At the end of the passage is a room with two gun cameras. Use a chaff grenade to distract them and grab the body armor and ammo in this room. Leave the same way you came in.
Exit through the large door to the north.
Cargo Elevator
In the elevator you'll be attacked by three guards.
When the elevator gets to the bottom, there will be another elevator across the way. There is a camera watching the space between, so throw a chaff grenade and run across. Take this elevator to the bottom.
Boss: Vulcan Raven
Either the Stinger or Nikita missiles are the best weapons for this battle.
Feel free to use claymores during this battle.
After the battle, Head north. In this next area are numerous gun cameras, so use a chaff grenade to get by them.
Underground Base
Make your way up to the Metal Gear. Here you'll see a cut scene where Liquid Snake will knock the PAL card from Snake's hand. When you once again have control of Snake, head down the ladder
Get the key from the drainage ditch on the ground floor. Use the mine detector to locate it. There are also bombs here, so be sure to check your inventory to make sure you didn't pick one up by accident.
It's possible that a rat took the card. If this happens, you'll see a moving dot on the mine detector. Shoot the rat and take the card.
Go to the command room, where you encountered Liquid Snake earlier. He's gone, bet there are two cameras here that will gas the room if they see you. Use a chaff grenade to cover you and use the key.
As it turns out, you need to modify the key. First you'll need to cool it, then heat it.
The quickest method is to go right at the top of the second flight of stairs in the Underground Base and follow the path around. Jump over the side just before the pillar, where the walkway turns round to the left, and drop down to a platform where two pipes are located (Red and Blue). Shooting either one of these pipes changes the shape of the key instantly but you still have to input cold(W) first followed by hot(Z).
Alternatively go to the warehouse (where you fought Raven) and freeze the key by equipping it and standing in one place for a while.
Once the key is ready, go as quickly as possible to the command room and use the key on the computer in the command room.
Now to heat the card. Go all the way back to the blast furnace steam room. Again, equip the card and stand here until the key changes. Then go back, as quickly as you can, to the command room. Once here, save your game and use the key.
After a cut scene, equip the gas mask and call Otakon and ask him to shut off the gas to the room you're in.
After this, you'll have to fight Liquid Snake who's piloting the Metal Gear.
Boss: Metal Gear Rex
The Metal Gear uses three attacks: laser beams, missiles, and a stomp attack. The missile is a long range weapon, and the stomp is short range. If you stay close to the Metal Gear, but out of stomping range you'll only have to deal with the laser.
For this fight you'll want to use the Stinger missiles. If you run out of missiles, switch to your next most powerful weapon.
Its attacks will be less accurate if you use a chaff grenade. Go ahead and use all you have because you won't need them for the rest of the game.
Shoot the dome on its left shoulder. This will lower its health bar. Once the bar reaches zero, you'll see a cut scene. After the scene, the cockpit will be open. Throw a stun grenade to buy yourself some time and start shooting the now open cockpit.
Boss: Liquid Snake
There is a three minute time limit for this fight. You will be using only punches and kicks, no weapons.
Do not try to knock Liquid Snake off the side of the Metal Gear until his health is at zero. He'll have to run back up. This will take a while, and you have a very limited amount of time for the fight. Once his health is at zero, you must knock him off the side to win the battle.
Stay away from the edges of the Metal Gear. The last thing you want to do is fall off.
Escape
Back when Snake was being tortured, if you submitted then Otacon will help you out here. If you resisted the torture, Meryl will assist you.
Your friend (Otacon or Meryl) will find the keys to a car. You have to fire a machine gun to cover your escape while your friend drives. When you pull up to a checkpoint, kill all the guards, then shoot the barrels to blow them up and clear a path.
Liquid Snake will chase you in a jeep of his own, and shoot at you. Shoot snake as quickly and as often as you can. Use whatever items you have left, including rations, because you won't need them after this.
Just keep shooting until you see the final cut scene of the game.
