Brinstar
Morph Ball
In this, a remake of the original Metroid, you'll begin in the area known as Brinstar. Head left when you gain control of venerable bounty hunter Samus Aran and blast through the enemies to find your first power-up, the Morph Ball. By hitting Down twice on the D-Pad you can become a ball and roll through tight spaces. Suffice to say we'll be using this frequently.
Long Beam
Go right now and roll through the tunnel, continuing east until you reach a blue door. Shoot it to open it, then go through to the next room. Roll under the blocks here to the blue door on the right, and head to the next room. Run right through this room until you need to morph into a ball and roll through the tunnel to find a Chozo statue. Leap into the statue's outstretched hand and become a morph ball. It will show you where to go next, then refill your health gauge, if you've sustained any damage. Head right through two doors to find your first Save Room. Save your game, then go back one room to the tall shaft. Leap from platform to platform until you see a blue door on the left; go through it. Head left to the tunnel, crouch and shoot the blocks away, then roll through & continue left to find another Chozo statue. Shoot the orb in its hand to find the Long Beam, which increases the distance of your shots.
Missiles
Go back one room and jump up to the short ledge. Shoot through the stones blocking the way through the ceiling, then leap up there to reach the next room. Continue up through this room and exit to the upper-left. Go left, jumping over the pools of acid, then through the door in the ceiling. Head left first to find the eagle statue; touch it, then go all the way right until a large creature attacks you. Kill it, then proceed right through the blue door. There's a Chozo statue here, so as before, become a morph ball in its hand to learn your next destination and refill your health. Exit right and you'll be back in the tall vertical shaft again, but at the top of it. Drop down a ways and shoot through the blocks on the right to reach the blue door on the right wall. Go through this room to the next, another shaft. Drop down and roll to the right to reach another Save Room. Use it, return to the previous shaft, and drop all the way to the bottom of it. Go through the door on the right and head east to find the Missiles. Apart from being considerably stronger than your normal beam, the missiles can also open red doors.
Charge Beam
Now go back to the left to face your first boss, the Earthworm.
BOSS: Earthworm
The Earthworm is quite easy to defeat, but you'll want to do it quickly, or you'll have to fight it again later in the game. To kill the beast, stand between its two burrow holes and wait for its head to appear. When it opens its eye, hit it with a missile! Quickly run away now, because it will charge you. When it goes back to the ceiling, stand beneath it and fire another missile at it. Repeat this process to grant the Earthworm a permanent dirt nap.
When the Earthworm is gone, you'll find the Charge Beam power-up, which lets you charge up your beam to release an even stronger shot. Exit this room to the left and return to the last Save Room. Save your game, leave, then head to the red door just about this one. Blast it with a missile and go through. Exit to the right twice, then leap up to the ledge on the left wall in the larger room. Roll left through the tunnel there to find your first Missile Tank, which expands your total missile-carrying capacity to 10.
Bombs
Go back to the big room and cross the room, exiting through the door on the right wall. Proceed through this next room to the door to the right, go through it, then crouch and shoot through the blocks to find another Missile Tank. Take it and shoot through the rest of the blocks to proceed. Cross the platforms to find an Energy Tank, which boosts your total health by 100. Continue right through this room and exit through the blue door. You'll be in yet another vertical shaft (get used to these). Drop down and shoot a missile at the red door to the left to find a Map Room. Download the map of Brinstar, then return to the shaft and head up to the second blue door on the left wall. Go across to the blue door to the left and go through to find a Save Room. Use it, then go back one room and take the upper-left door this time. Roll through the passageway here to the other side, then shoot the red door with a missile and go through. There you'll find the Bombs, which can clear certain blocks and allow you to "bomb-jump" in morph ball mode.
See the block with a red sphere inside it? That's a bomb block, susceptible to...you guessed it, bombs. Lay one there to destroy it, then roll through the passage, bombing your way through. Bomb-jump up when you have to and continue up to the Missile Tank. Take it, then go back through the tunnels right until you reach a locked door. Drop down and destroy the blocks, causing some leeches to attack you. Morph into a ball and drop some bombs to kill them and unlock the door. Go through. Use the Save Room below again if you want; otherwise go right to the vertical shaft and drop down to the blue door below this one. Go left through this room (where you found the Energy Tank), exit left, then blow through the floor of the next room with your bombs. Exit through the door on the left. Shoot through the enemies here and fire a missile at the red door to the left. Go through to find a Chozo statue and it will give you your next destination: Norfair. Go back two rooms and bomb your way through the ceiling. Exit to the left, then left again. Bomb the floor here and drop down to find another Missile Tank. Return to the area above and exit left. Cross this room and head left to the vertical shaft. Drop down to the bottom and go through the lower-right door. This is where you fought the Earthworm. Go right and bomb through the blocks to reach some platforms; cross them to reach a blue door. Go through, then ride the elevator there down to Norfair.
Norfair
In the first room of Norfair, head to the bottom of the room and exit right to use the Save Room. Go back to the previous room and exit left this time, then look for a Missile Tank on a platform you can't quite reach. Morph into a ball and keep laying bombs to double-jump up to the platform and reach the Missile Tank. At the left end of the room, roll through the hidden passageway and bomb through the other side. Exit left, then ride the elevator there up to Crateria.
Crateria
Unknown Item #1
Blow up the right wall and exit right to the pond. Jump in the water and look for the very conspicuous block on the left. Blow it up and keep bombing your way left to the Skeleton Shark's grotto. Bomb the left wall there to find a Missile Tank, then jump out of the lake and leap up the platforms. When you come to a wall, bomb through it and go left, rolling through the passage so you can leap up into the Chozo Ruins. Roll to the end of the tunnel there, then lay a bomb to drop through the floor to another tunnel; roll through it to reach a door. Head into the next room to find a Chozo statue holding an orb. Shoot the orb to find an Unknown Item. For know, all this thing does is break through those strange blocks you've been seeing, but later on in the game it will become something much more.
Power Grip
Head back to the left, break through the blocks there, then bomb the block at the end so you can drop down for a Missile Tank. Head back through the blue door and destroy the strange block you passed by on your way here to reveal just how large this room is. Go left up the platforms to find a bird's open mouth, then jump through it to find a door. Blast through to the next room, then fall through the floor there to the bottom. Go left, blast through the blocks, and grab the Power Grip, which allows you to grip onto edges and ledges. Leave this little room, then head up the platforms with the assistance of the Power Grip. Take the upper-left exit, leap over the platforms, then shoot through the blocks to reach the lower-left exit. Go through, then jump into the great wide open to land near your ship. Use it to refill your energy and save your game, then go right to find a blue door. Shoot through it, roll and bomb your way through this next room, then go through the next door to return to the elevator shaft. Take it back down to Norfair.
Norfair, Part 2
Ice Beam
Drop down, grab the left edge, then roll through the passage to the lower-right door. Cross this room to the right to find a Missile Tank at the far end, then return to the previous room. Take the blue door above this one; you've been here before, remember (your map should prove that to you more than anything). Roll through the passage to the right and pass through the blue door at the right end. This is the elevator shaft to Brinstar. Instead of taking the lift, take the right exit to the Save Room, then exit right again. Be careful of the acid here! Leap from platform to platform (you'll pass a Missile Tank you can't get yet) to the right end of the room, then go through the blue door there to reach a vertical shaft. Climb it to the first door on the left, then head through it. Be very careful leaping over the platforms here to avoid plunging into the acid, then go through the left door to find a Chozo statue with an orb in its hand. Shoot it and grab your new Ice Beam, which can freeze enemies; this is especially useful for flying baddies, since you can use them as platforms.
Use the statue to refill your health gauge if necessary, then go left, roll through the passage, bomb through the wall, and roll into the next room. Freeze the enemy here, then use it to reach the door to the left, which you should go through. Exit left again to use a Save Room, then go back one room and freeze the enemies to make platforms so you can reach the upper-right door. Do this again in the next room to cross the acid and reach a Chozo statue. Jump in its hand and morph into a ball and it will show you where to go next: Kraid's Lair. Keep going right, freeze the next set of enemies, then go through the door. Shoot the right wall above the Ripper in this room to find a Missile Tank, then continue to the door. Drop down this room through the crumbling floor, then drop to the bottom of the shaft and take the lower-left door. Time to get that Missile Tank yo had to pass earlier. Go left, bomb the floor above the enemy that's jumping up and down in the acid, then freeze him when he's at the apex of his jump. Now jump from that enemy to get the Missile Tank! Continue left into the Save Room, use it, then go left again to the elevator shaft. Ride it up to Brinstar.
Brinstar, Part 2
Exit left, then go left through the long corridor and exit left again. You'll be in the vertical shaft. Head up to the top of the shaft, freeze the Rippers up there, then jump from them to the upper-left ledge. Go left to the next room and drop down to find a Missile Tank. Lay a bomb on the floor below the Tank, then exit left to reach the left vertical shaft. Drop down about halfway through the shaft, then freeze the Ripper there so you can reach the left ledge. Bomb the block; this should lead you to a room on the left. Bomb through the left section of the floor, then bomb through the next floor to find another Missile Tank. Fall through the nearby crumbling blocks, noting the location of the Super Missile Tank for later, then roll through the right passage to return to the shaft. Drop down to the bottom and take the bottom-left door to the next room. Keep going left, rolling under the obstacle, then shoot the first baddie you see there. Now shoot the ceiling above where that enemy was to reveal an Energy Tank. Morph into a ball and use your bombs to bomb-jump up there to get it (if you're not skilled at this, you can come back when you get the Hi-Jump boots). Exit left, then lay a bomb on the bridge to open a gap. Drop down to the bottom of this area, then leap to the ledge on the left. Roll through and lay a bomb, and you'll end up in a cannon. Lay a bomb there, then hold Right on the D-Pad as you're launched up to end up in an area with another Missile Tank. Go back down to the bottom of this secret area and exit right to find an elevator. Ride it down to Kraid.
Kraid
The first room down on the left is a Save Room, so use it, but don't leave immediately thereafter. Instead, stand against the left wall and morph into a ball, then lay a bomb to blow open a gap. Hold Left as you fall through, then roll through to a room with a Missile Tank in it. Take it, then head back to the Save Room, and the shaft through the right exit after that. Blow open the red door across the way with a missile, then go through to find another Missile Tank. Keep going right and exit through the door at the end. Bomb the farthest section of the floor here, then drop down to a cannon. Set off a bomb and launch up through this room, holding Left on the D-Pad as you do. When you reach the ledge, roll off the right edge, holding Left as you fall to land in a nook. Roll through for yet another Missile Tank, then drop down to the cannon again. Blast up to that left ledge again, then leap to the ledge on the right (you'll hang from it). Jump from there to the smaller ledge on the left, then jump again to the next ledge up on the right. Shoot diagonally at the next ledge to clear the block away, then jump to it. Keep jumping up the ledges until you reach a door, then go through it. Blast the cracked blocks, then go left to the door and take it to the next room. Break the blocks here, then fall into a cannon. Blast yourself up, then lay a bomb next to the blue block as you're falling back down to break it. Jump in the cannon again and hold Right as you're flying up to land past where the blue block was. Bomb through the next block and fire a missile at the red door to proceed. Find the hole in the statue here and roll into it as a morph ball to bring energy to the red light. Shoot that light, then grab the zip line overhead and ride it to an Energy Tank. Continue right to a Save Room, use it, then exit right. Drop through the crumbling block back here in the shaft, then go left through two doors. Ride the zip line across to your next boss battle.
BOSS: Earthworm #2
Stand on the block and wait for the Earthworm's head to start shaking, then jump up and grab the zip line to ride to the other side. Quickly turn around and launch some missiles into the worm's slimy hide before it retracts into its hole. Repeat this process of zipping back and forth across the room and firing missiles at the Earthworm until it's dead.
Unknown Item #2
The acid level in the room will drop after the defeat of the second Earthworm, so go down and lay a couple bombs in the floor where it was stationed. Head left over the pillars, then shoot the upper section of the wall to open a gap. Roll through and leap to the Missile Tank, then go back to the boss room and take the left door. Use the cannon to launch up, holding Right on the D-Pad as you fall to reach the door to the right. Go through, shoot the red light, then ride the zip line over the acid. Break the purple blocks, then roll through to the next door; take it to the vertical shaft. Fall all the way down, then exit left, returning to the elevator shaft. When you're there, drop down to the door on the left (the one below the Save Room) and go through. Blast through the purple blocks, then roll/bomb through the passage to reach a pull. Bomb-jump to it, then ride it across to the door on the left, which you should take. Head up the platforms, then take the door on the right. Head right, then leap to the upper area. Roll left to the locked door, then head right under the blocks to find a beastie you need to kill. Fill it with missiles to unlock the door, which leads you to a Missile Tank. Bomb through the floor after you grab it, then drop down through this shaft all the way down. It's quite a ways. Go right through two doors, bomb the block directly beneath you, then bomb the one below that and take the left door to a Save Room. Use it, then come back out and head right. Blast the purple blocks away, and then the cracked block on the right. Roll through the passage to find a Chozo statue holding a sphere; blast it to find the second Unknown Item. Again, it's currently incompatible with your current suit, but at the very least it will allow you to shoot through the kind of blocks preventing you from leaving this room.
Speed Boost
Shoot through the block here to go left one room, then leap up to the tunnel to the left. Roll through it, then exit to the right. Continue through this enemy-filled room to the next, which is a Save Room. Use it (you'll be fighting a boss soon), then exit right twice. Jump up on the platform above the pipe and shoot through the ceiling to form a gap. Jump through, then head left until you reach a room with a wall of blocks. Jump up the small ledges to the top, then shoot the blocks above you and then to the left. Drop down into the middle of the room, then take the bottom-left door. Go left, shooting through the blocks to clear a path for the zip line. After that, break the floor beneath the platforms and use the propulsion devices under them to break the upper blocks. Now ride the zip line across to the Missile Tank. Exit to the left, bomb the floor, drop down, then roll through the tunnel and head right. Take the upper-right door again, cross over to the Save Room, then go one room to the right. Bomb the block in the floor, drop down, then head up the ramp to the right. Get on the platforms and head left, blasting through the blocks to clear the way. Go through the door on the left, then proceed to the eye-door. Hit it with a missile when the eye is open, then proceed to the next room to face Kraid himself!
BOSS: Kraid
The key to killing Kraid is to shoot him in the face, thus causing him to open his mouth, then pumping missiles down his gullet before his maw closes again. You'll have to jump up to biting height to do this, all while dodging (or shooting) the claws he hurls at you. After he's swallowed enough missiles, he'll destroy the platform you're using and knock you to the ground. Quickly climb up the brown platforms poking out of the wall before they disappear, then leap to the small platform near Kraid's head. Be wary of Kraid's arm here, as he'll often slash out at you in the hopes of knocking you back down to the floor. Keep shooting at his head and firing missiles into his mouth until Kraid goes belly-up, figuratively speaking.
Now go left, bomb through the blocks, and enter the next room to find an orb containing the Speed Boost. This will allow you to dash across the screen and break through boost blocks, as well as destroy any enemy dumb enough to stand in your path. Once you have it, drop down and speed dash right into Kraid's lair. You'll break through the boost blocks and proceed right into the next room. Just remember to shoot open the door before you reach it, or you'll have to build up some speed again. Head into the next room until you hit the barrier that you can't charge through. Now head up through this shaft, freezing the enemies and using them as platforms to reach the first door on the left. Go through it and carefully cross through the acid to reach a Missile Tank. Take it, then return to the shaft. Head up the rest of the way to the upper-right door and go through to use the Save Room. Go back to the shaft and take the door directly across from it now. Jump to the zip line here and ride it across, shooting missiles at all the enemies behind you. You should land on a cracked block at the end, so face left and shoot the large block. Head through the tunnel and go through to the elevator shaft. Bomb through the floor to reach the true bottom of the shaft, then exit via the lower-left door. Go left through this room and take the door at the end, then blast through the red door to the left with a missile to find the Map Room for Kraid. Download the map, then go back through the two rooms to the elevator shaft. Climb up to it and take it back to Brinstar.
Brinstar, Part 3
After the right wall falls, head that way and shoot through the red door with a missile. Go through and jump into the Chozo statue's hand as a morph ball to find your next destination: somewhere in Norfair. Return to the elevator shaft and exit left this time. Ascend this shaft and head right through the door. Continue past the Chozo statue to the next vertical shaft, then make your way up eight platforms. Stand on the ledge on the right wall, roll into a morph ball, and perform a double bomb-jump to a secret tunnel. Roll through to find a Missile Tank, then roll out to the next shaft through the tunnel to the right. Go through the door across the way and make your way through this long corridor again to the elevator to Norfair. Ride it down.
Norfair, Part 3
Hi-Jump
Exit via the lower-right room to reach a Save Room, then exit right again. Cross the platforms here and take the lower-right exit. Now shoot open the door you just came through, go as far right as you can in this shaft, then speed dash left through the door. You should enter the large room again and break through some blocks. Stop before you plunge straight into the acid, turn around, then speed dash back into the shaft, shooting the door as you approach it so you don't slow down. When you reach the shaft, your speed dash should break through some blocks in the floor, allowing you to drop down a level. Go through the left door and head left, shooting the blocks out of the way so you have a clear running space. Now speed dash to the right, shooting open the door and running into the previous room. You should break through the floor and fall down yet again. Go through the door on the left now, then through the red missile door at the end. Blast the orb here to claim your Hi-Jump boots, which increases the height of your jumps substantially. You can now jump in morph ball mode as well! Go back two rooms now to the shaft and hi-jump up to the right ledge; roll through the tunnel to find a Missile Tank. Now drop down a few ledges until you can drop any farther, then shoot open the left wall and jump through to find a door. Go through and use the Chozo statue to reveal your next destination: Brinstar. Jump up the platforms and go through the door to return to the shaft, then jump on the right ledge. You'll fall into a cannon. Use it to launch up, then drop down and go through the left door. Speed dash through this room to the Save Room, use it, then return to the elevator shaft and ride the lift back up to Brinstar.
Brinstar, Part 4
Varia Suit
Go left, through the long corridor, to reach the vertical shaft. Take the uppermost door on the right wall to the next room, then maneuver around the pillars, tunnels, and pipe to land on a ledge. Continue right to a find a plant preventing further travel. Instead of turning back, shoot the block overhead and roll through the pipe. Drop down by the door, then go through. Shoot the ceiling in here, then jump up and grab the right ledge. Pull yourself up, wait for the flying enemy to appear, then freeze it and use it as a platform to reach the left ledge. Shoot through the blocks, jump up, then go through the upper-left door. Shoot the plants until the leeches destroy them, then bomb the leeches and head through the hole. Jump up to the large obstacle, then roll through the gap and quickly jump up to the ledge before the block breaks beneath your feet. Do this again, destroy the blocks in the way, let the leeches destroy the plant, kill the leeches afterward with bombs, then shoot through the red door with a missile. Enter the room and shoot the orb to claim the Varia Suit, which increases your defenses and protects you from intense heat and acid!
Return to the previous room and drop through the conspicuous block into the acid. Go down, bomb the floor, then drop down and bomb the left wall to open a cap. Go through to find an Energy Tank, then exit this room via the top-right door. Drop down through the gap and head right into a Save Room. Continue right into the next room, drop into the acid, and bomb the blocks near the pipe on the right. Don't fall in yet, though; first, roll through the pipe and blast the red section of the pillar to lift it up. Roll beneath it and some leeches will cling to you. Now go back and roll through the gap you made to reach a plant that the leeches will devour. When the path is clear, continue right and roll through the pip to the next room. Head up the ledges and jump in the Chozo statue's hand as a morph ball to hear that you have to go to Norfair again. Joy. Head right through the door to reach a vertical shaft, then exit via the second door on the left from the bottom (the one above the map room). Head left through the five rooms to reach the nearest vertical shaft, then drop to the bottom of it and exit right. You know the drill. Head right to the elevator and ride it back down to Norfair.
Norfair, Part 4
Exit right, pass through the Save Room, and continue right to the room with the lava (which can still hurt you, so don't go jumping in). Exit right again to the vertical shaft, then ascend it to the very top. Go through the left door and grab the Missile Tank beyond the platforms. Return to the shaft now and descend to the very bottom of it. We'll be speed dashing again to break through the floor. Go through the door in the left wall, shoot open the door you came through, then speed dash left to clear the blocks. Speed dash right next into the vertical shaft to break through the floor and drop to the next level down. Repeat this with the room to the left, speed dashing back into the shaft to break through the next bit of floor. Enter the room and go all the way to the left, then roll under the statue where you found the Hi-Jump boots to the next room. Blast the blocks around you here, then jump up and roll through the tunnel, bombing your way through. When you fall on the platform, leap to the nearby pillar and fire your Ice Beam at the flying enemy so you can leap from it to the door. In the next room, clear out all the enemies and blocks in the way, then speed dash left, jumping at the edge of the platform to crash through all the blocks. Go through the door to the next room, then exit left to find a Save Room. Use it, then exit left, then left through the small room to the door. Go through. Freeze the enemies in here to cross the room, then exit left again. Drop down and blow open the red door with a missile to find the Norfair Map Room. Download the map, then leave.
Wave Beam
Fall into the lava; don't worry, it will vanish, allowing you to drop down through the floor. Go down to the bottom and pass through the door on the right. Jump over the pillars to the door on the right wall, and go through. Bomb the floor to the right in this smaller room, then drop down and go through the door on the right wall. Go right through this room until you reach the second enemy jumping out of the lava; above it, shoot the second block from the top and jump to find a Missile Tank. Continue right to grab a second Missile Tank, then leave the room. Climb back up to where you shot through the floor and take the door to the right this time. Blast through the vines here (use missiles on the vines with enemies in them), then head right into the Save Room. Use it, then go back into the previous room and drop a bomb on the floor to open a gap. Fall into the vanishing lava, then keep going down and left into the next room. Take down the creature here with missiles, then lay a bomb at the second wall. Go through, blast through the door with a missile, then shoot the orb in the next room to find your Wave Beam, which is more powerful than your current beam, and can shoot through walls. Go back to the last Save Room, use it, then exit right this time. Speed dash through this room while firing your new Wave Beam to clear the blocks to the next room. There, roll into the nook below the slumbering slug and shoot its stomach until it blows up. Now head to where the slug was and continue to a second slug. This one won’t be so placid. Quickly lay some bombs so that they explode as the slug passes over them. Jump over the slug, then drop more bombs until it's dead. Now blast the ceiling over the slug's shell to find an Energy Tank (obviously, jump up and grab it). Go to the left side of the room now and speed dash right, shooting through the door when you reach it so you keep dashing into the next room. You'll break through the blocks and fall to the level below. Jump up and grab the Missile Tank there, then drop down and go through the door to the left. Use this Save Room, since there's a boss just around the corner. Exit left, shoot through the vines here, then bomb/roll through the passage to reach the next room. Bomb the hole there to trigger the arrival of the Giant Slug.
BOSS: Giant Slug
The Giant Slug sticks (literally) to the ceiling for this battle and has but one means of offense: blasts of energy, easily avoided. Watch for the Ripper here, then freeze it with the Ice Beam when it's halfway up one of the walls. Get on top of it, then shoot the red vines (no, not of the licorice variety) from with the Giant Slug is hanging with missiles until the Ripper unfreezes. Quickly get off it, then wait until it's at the other wall and repeat the process until the Giant Slug crashes through the floor. Thus endeth the battle.
Now head down through the hole the Giant Slug made and go through to the bottom-right door. Go through it, then take the elevator there down to the land of Ridley. But wait! Take the elevator right back up to Norfair, then return to the Giant Slug's lair to find that it's gone. Hmm… Okay, now go back down to Ridley for real this time.
Ridley
Super Missiles
Drop down off the lift and head left. Climb up to the ledge and drop through the wall, then shoot the plants to clear the way to…a boss!
BOSS: Giant Wasp
Like most video game wasps, you have to hit this guy (or gal?) in the stinger to kill it. When the battle starts, roll into a morph ball until it passes by, then get back up and start pumping those missiles into the venomous barb on its backside. Always try and stay behind the Giant Wasp, because it'll shoot stingers at you if you're in front of it (although you can shoot the stingers for power-ups). Keep this up until you blow the stinger away and the Giant Wasp crash lands.
Head through the gap the dying wasp cleared to find your first pack of Super Missiles. These blow the regular missiles out of the water, and can open those green doors you've been seeing. Exit the room through the right door, shoot a missile at the top block, then drop down to the bottom of the elevator shaft. Use the Save Room to the right, then come back out and shoot the green door to the left with a Super Missile. Go through to the next room to the red door, hit it with a regular missile, then go through and stop as soon as you enter the next room. There's an Energy Tank there, but the four blocks directly in front of it will crumble beneath you, so jump over those and land on the Energy Tank directly to claim it. Now go through the door to the left. Lay a bomb at the left block to open a gap, then wait for the string of enemies to come strolling out. Roll through when the tunnel is vacated, then bomb through the other block and proceed to the next room. Drop down and go through the door on the left to find another Save Room. Use it, then go out and roll right through the gap, then down, left, and up for a Missile Tank. Roll down to the bottom of the room now and shoot open the red door with a missile to find the Map Room for Ridley. Download the map, then exit right.
Unknown Item #3
Go right through this very long room, grabbing the Missile Tank on the way to the door at the far right end. Head through it to find a Save Room. Use it, then exit right. Climb this shaft as far as you can, then go through the left door. Go over to the fifth pipe here, lay a bomb on it, then drop down through it. Bomb through the blocks to reach a new area. Lay a bomb on the bridge and fall through the gap to land in some of that magical vanishing lava. Lay a bomb at the right wall to find a Missile Tank. Get out of the lava now and go through the pipe. Head left through the door, then jump up to the passage and roll through. Drop down to the floor on the other side, lay a bomb on the purple block to unleash four flames, kill them, then take the Missile Tank from the pillar. Leap to the left ledge now, drop a bomb to form a gap. Jump up and shoot a Super Missile at the block there, then roll through. Bomb the large obstacle here, then take the Super Missile Tank, which ups your total Super Missile capacity by four. Go back down now and exit left. Freeze the enemy here and use it to reach the Missile Tank, then drop down and exit left. Save your game in the Save Room, then exit left again. Go left to the end of the room, then go to the lower-left exit of this next empty room. Hit the eye-door with a Super Missile, then head through the door it was guarding to find a Chozo statue holding an orb. Shoot that orb to find the third Unknown Item. As before, you can't use this for anything now other than to break through the blocks. Break the block behind the Chozo statue now and go through to find a hidden Energy Tank, then return to the large empty room. It won't be empty for much longer…
BOSS: Ridley
Metroid regular Ridley is back again for Metroid Zero, and you deal with him pretty similarly to the way you do all of his other incarnations. Start the battle off at the right end of the screen, firing missile after missile into Ridley. Shoot at him from an angle; don't stand directly beneath him, or chances are he'll pick you up and put the hurtin' on you (though this is a good opportunity to fill him with missiles). If you run out of missiles or need power-ups, shoot the fireballs Ridley hurls at you with your beam, and try not to let them knock you into the lava. That's really all there is to this battle: missiles and missiles and more missiles.
When Ridley dies, exit right and freeze one of the enemies coming out of the pipe. Now wait for the next enemy to come out, jumping so that it's higher than the first enemy. Freeze that enemy as well, then use them to reach the upper ledge. Destroy the block and head through the wall to reach the door. Go through to the Save Room, save your game, then exit right. Return to the elevator shaft and ride the lift back up to Norfair.
Norfair, Part 5
Screw Attack
When the statue here crumbles, go right through the wall and shoot the door with a missile. Go right past the crumbling Chozo statue and roll through the passage, laying bombs so you fall down to the room below. Run left through the rooms past the elevator shaft until you reach some blocks you need to shoot out of the way. Continue to the cannon and jump in. Launch up the shaft "behind" Norfair proper, then go left through the door. Head left, freezing the enemy and bypassing the Missile Tank to reach a red door. Blow it open, then go in to find the Screw Attack, a very usefully enhancement then allows you to spin jump through rooms and damage enemies in the process.
Use the statue to recharge, then return to the previous room. Screw Attack through this area to grab that Missile Tank, then exit right. Use the Screw Attack to drop down the shaft until you spot a green door in the right wall. Blast through it with a Super Missile and go through. Screw Attack through the enemies in this room, then roll through the tunnel at the far right to eventually reach a door. Go through it, bomb the floor, then drop into the vanishing lava (gotta love that stuff). When you reach the bottom, go left through the door. Stand by the pipe here, then let the enemy that comes out of it fly past you. Freeze it with the Ice Beam when it's past the block, then use it as a platform to reach a Super Missile Tank. Freeze the same enemy again, get back on it, then blast the upper-left section of the wall to open up a passage. Roll through it to find a Missile Tank, then go right until you reach the door again. Go through, then take the upper-left exit (we're heading back the way we came). Head left through this room, through the passage again, and beyond the second half of the room to the door. Go through it, then Screw Attack through the wall to reach the door above the one you just came through. Save your game here, then exit right. Screw Attack through these enemies here, then go into the next room and make your way to the right exit. Roll through the passage to the right here to reach the room where you found the Hi-Jump boots. Exit right, then right through the next room to end up in the vertical shaft. Destroy the right wall here, then go up and go left through the door. Continue breaking through the blocks to reach the green door. Hit it with a Super Missile, then go through it. Screw attack through the walls in here, then after you go through the final wall, break the top block to reach a Missile Tank. Go left into the next room and head up the platforms. Bomb the upper-right block, then roll down to the floor so you're there when the left wall disappears. When it does, jump to the platform to take the Super Missile Tank. Head back to the easternmost vertical shaft now and go through the next door up on the left. Head left through the next room to the Save Room, use it, then exit left to return to the elevator shaft. Ride the lift up to Brinstar now.
Brinstar, Part 5
Speed dash left through the long room, shooting open the door at the end so you're still dashing into the vertical shaft. When you're there, press Down to store the charge, then quickly return to the previous room. Stand in front of the little hill, shoot the door open, roll into a ball, and shoot left to blast through two rooms. When you land, roll into the shaft, drop down, then jump to the left platform. Shoot through the left wall here and shoot through the other room to find a Super Missile Tank. Return to the shaft now and climb all the way to the absolute top of it. Go through the upper-left door, charge up at the Chozo statue here, then exit left. Continue through this harmless room to the next, where the eagle statues are located. Touch the head so that the mouths open, opening the way to another elevator shaft. Ride this one to a new area, Tourian.
Tourian
Take the first door on the right to find a Save Room. Use it, then continue right to the next room. A Metroid will attack you here; quickly freeze it with the Ice Beam and pump it full of missiles (five, to be exact) to kill it. Exit right, then jump to the platform to deal with another Metroid. Kill it, then drop down and take out another Metroid. Go through the door now; you'll face four Metroids across the room, so take out each one, one at a time. Exit left and drop to the bottom of the shaft. Kill the two Metroids down there, then go through the right door. Keep heading right and killing Metroids until you reach a Save Room. Use it, then go back to the previous room and bomb the floor. Drop down to the platform and exit right. Kill all the Metroids, then drop to the bottom of the room and exit left. Bomb the floor in the next room and four Metroids will charge you! Quickly freeze them all and missile them before you sustain too much damage. Once they're dead, bomb the floor again, then deal with another four Metroids. Once they're gone, breathe a sigh of relief, for you won't have to face anymore Metroids after that. The top-left door should be open now, so go through it to reach another Save Room. Save your game, then go left into the next room. Shoot the rings of energy here for power-ups (refill your health and missile supply), then blast through the red door to reach a large, frustrating room with energy rings and missiles flying at you from all directions. Quickly shoot through the strange barriers with your missiles, jump through, then take in the horrific sight of Mother Brain.
BOSS: Mother Brain
Shoot the tank open with a couple of Super Missiles, then fire one into Mother Brain's open eye. The eye will close, so Screw Attack between the two platforms until the eye opens again. Crouch and fire a Super Missile at it, then Screw Attack over the platforms again. If you run out of Super Missiles, switch to regular missiles, but be sure to fire off several at a time instead of just one. This battle is made far more difficult by all the projectiles flying across the screen, but keep at it and try your best not to fall into the lava, and you will prevail.
After Mother Brain goes brain-dead, you'll have two minutes to get off Zebes before it all goes up in smoke. Double-time it, soldier! Exit left and leap up all the platforms to find an elevator. Get on it and ride it up to Crateria.
Crateria, Part 2
Go through the door here, then leap up the platforms to the top. Shoot through the walls and speed dash right, shooting through the door and dashing into the next area. You should break through some blocks. Keep going right, then jump in your ship and fly off…
…Unfortunately, those incorrigible Space Pirates will shoot your ship down. It crash lands back on Zebes (wait, wasn't this place supposed to explode? Well, turns out only Tourian is toast), leaving you without your power suit, power-ups, or weapons, save a pistol that automatically charges.
Chozodia
Head left when you regain control and go left to the next section. Pull yourself up to the ledge and continue left to the ship itself. Approach the tunnel and you'll crawl through it automatically. Continue to the locked door, then drop down below it and go left. Blast the blocks away and go through the gap to enter the Space Pirate's Mother Ship. Past the passage, jump up and crawl through the next passage, then shoot the ceiling to clear the blocks. Jump up to download the Mother Ship's map, then shoot the blue door. Go through into the next room, which is a Save Room. Use it (it will refill your energy as well), then crawl through the tunnel above the red door to exit left. In the next room, charge up your pistol and drop down. Quickly stun the Space Pirate, then jump up to the platform with the gate. Leap to the next platform to the left, then to the top. There's a second Pirate up there, so stun him, too, then run past him into the next room. Don't rest on your laurels yet…the Space Pirates can follow you from room to room! Crawl through the tunnel here, leap to the left ledge, and hide in the little nook until the Space Pirate goes away. When it's gone, go through the open gate and leap up the ledges in the next room, avoiding the green laser beams; touching them alerts the pirates to your presence. Jump over the laser on the right, then crawl through the passage beyond. Shoot the crack in the wall and drop through the hole…right through a security laser. Be quick about this and jump up to the right ledge. Pull yourself up and go through the door there. Continue climbing up through this room to the next, then climb that one to the next door and go through. Leap over the pillar and wait for the Space Pirate to come in and open the gate. Head under the passage and leap up into the next area, where you'll have to crawl through another passage beneath the battleship.
When you drop through the floor, head through the door to the right to find a Save Room. Use it, then go back into the previous room and jump up and down the ledges to reach the next room. Blast through the cracks, then drop down and shoot through more cracks until you hit the bottom of the room. Head over the floating platform and go through the door. Go forward and fall through the crumbling blocks, then wait for the Space Pirates to leave before you go through the open gate. Continue through the left door to a room with searchlights. Stay out of them! Head up the ledges to the top and take the door to the right. Shoot up, then shoot the remaining cracked blocks, but don't shoot the cracks in the ceiling near the left door, unless you want a Space Pirate to drop in. Go through the door, shoo through the wall, then drop down and enter the next room. Save your game here, then continue left. Lots of security laser beams here, so watch out! Fall to the bottom floor and maneuver left through the lasers to the upper-left door. Head through it, then drop down. Flee from the Space Pirate by crawling through the passage, then go through the door into the next room. Continue through these outer rooms until you reach the Chozo Ruins, then drop down all the way and continue into the next room. Shoot through the blocks, then go left into the next room. Jump up to the ledge and go to the end, then wait for the Space Pirate to run past. When he's gone, drop down and enter the next room. Use this Save Room, then exit through the other door. Exit left again, then navigate the searchlights here on your way to the top-right exit. In the next room, drop down and go through the right exit. Crawl under the blocks here, shooting your way through, then ascend the ledges to reach the exit. Climb the ledges in the following room as well, then exit. Another harmless room. Jump up to the ledge, then head through the door.
Ah, more security lasers now…big ones. Be extra careful not to trigger them here as you make your way to the next room. There, crawl through the passage and shoot the blocks out. Cross the bridge, then drop down and head through the left door. Continue through this room to the next, where you need to shoot the wall before going through the doorway. Climb through the shaft to the next door, go through, then crawl through the passage to the next area. Climb the ledges here, then crawl through another passage to reach the next room. Fall through the crumbling floor here, then go through the passage. Climb the ledges to the door on the left and go in to find a Save Room. Use it, then go back to the previous room. Go right to where you saw that strange (Power Bomb) upgrade earlier to find that it's gone. Go left as far as you can now, then head up into the tunnel and crawl through. And the mystery is solved: a Space Pirate is carrying the Power Bomb Tank somewhere. When it leaves, get out of the passage and go into the next room, where the pirate went. Dodge the security lasers here, go through the tunnel, then head up and right into the next room. It's a Space Pirate ambush! Bolt into the next room and climb up this shaft to a passageway. A pirate will crawl through it behind you, so stun him, then crawl out the rest of the way. Another pirate will attack, so stun him too and run left. Go through the door, climb up the platforms, then go into the next room and drop down. Go left as far as you can, then jump up the platforms to the top. Crawl through the tunnel there, shoot through the blocks, then jump off the bridge. Shoot the last block to destroy the bridge, thus preventing the pirates from pursuing you further. No go through the door, drop through the floor, save your game there, then go on into the next room, heading right. Climb the ledges, then exit left. Time for a boss fight…
BOSS: Chozo Orb Test
To pass the test, you must shoot the large orb here whenever Samus is not being displayed in it; if you do, you'll only damage yourself! After a few solid hits, your doppelganger will come to life and start carrying the orb around, trying to hit you. Watch out when the screen flashes, as this is an indicator that a bolt of electricity will coming your way very shortly. Keep shooting the orb whenever Samus isn't in it to finish the battle.
Plasma Beam, Gravity Suit, and Space Jump
You'll regain your power suit after the battle, and all the associated power-ups in terms of health and missile capacity! Your Unknown Items will then become the Plasma Beam, Gravity Suit, and Space Jump! The Plasma Beam is the most powerful weapon yet, the Gravity Suit allows you to move normally in water and protect you from lava, and the Space Jump lets you spin jump over and over midair. Not too shabby, eh? Space Jump through this room to the top-right corner, then roll through the gap there and drop down. You'll run into a couple Space Pirates, but this time, it's their turn…to die! Shoot them with the Plasma Beam to kill them, then go back one room to save your game. Now go back to the section with the water under the floor, then shoot through the floor with a missile. Go to far left side, then speed dash right to break through the blocks to find a Super Missile Tank.
Time to return to the Space Pirate Mother Ship. Return there, space jumping up the glass tube to the ship, bomb through the blocks at the top, then roll through the tunnel. Shoot the Space Pirate on the other side, then enter the next room. You'll meet the Armored Space Pirate here; you have to shoot these guys a few more times if you want to kill them, but don't bother with missiles, as they're ineffective. Continue to the next room, space jump through it, then exit to the Save Room. Save your game, exit right, then exit right again to reach the small vertical shaft. Go up, shooting through the blocks to reach a red door on the left and a blue door on the right. Shoot through the block in the ceiling here, jump through, lay a bomb next to the robot, then follow it left. Jump up and go right to find a Super Missile Tank, then go back down to the red door and blast it with a missile. Go through, then climb to the green door and shoot it with a Super Missile before heading into the next room. Lay a bomb on the crack here, then drop down and kill the pirates. Head back up through the gap and bomb the center block. Take the Super Missle Tank, then return to the last vertical shaft. Head through the blue door this time, killing the pirate in the next room, then jumping up and going right to tunnel. Roll through and enter the next room, a Save Room. Use it, then go back out and take the red door just above it.
Power Bombs
Space jump up to the tunnel and roll through. Go into the next room and drop down, using the platforms to navigate around the walls. When you see the yellow robot, shoot it. After it passes by, go down and around to the next room, another shaft. Fall down and kill the pirates there, then go through the bottom-left door (across from the yellow one). Exit this room to the far left, jump up the next room, and exit through the upper-right door. Go right all the way here and fall through the crumbling block at the end. In the next room, make your way through the tunnels to reach the following room, which looks significantly different than the rest of the area. Go left as far as you can now to drop down. Go all the way down, drop through the floor, and follow the Space Pirate into the next room. Jump through the security lasers there to finally acquire your Power Bombs, which can clear a whole screen of blocks and open yellow doors.
Unfortunately, passing through the lasers triggers a Space Pirate attack. Kill all the pirates that flood the room, then use a Power Bomb to open the yellow door. Go through and use another Power Bomb to clear away the ceiling, then space jump up there to grab a Power Bomb Tank (after you kill the pirates protecting it, of course). Now head back four rooms now to the upper-left corner of the Mother Ship, then go into the middle blue door on the right wall. Head into the room to the right of this one. This is a Save Room, so use it. You now have a decision to make. If you don't feel you're ready to take on the final boss, you can go back through Crateria, Chozodia, Brinstar, Norfair, Kraid, Ridley, and Tourian to pick up all those missile tanks and power-ups you couldn't grab before. But if you do feel ready to take on the final boss--and you're more than equipped for it now--leave the Save Room and head back through the next room to the upper-left corner of the ship. Now bomb through the ceiling to reach the upper-right door, and go through it. Let off a Power Bomb, then roll through the passage you cleared, bombing your way to the end of it. Go through the door and make you way through the next room. Bomb the wall blocking the way, head through, and drop through the floor to the bottom. Now bomb through the wall to the right to find a red door. Hit it with a missile, take a deep breath, and step through it.
The Final Boss
FINAL BOSS: Meta-Ridley
See Meta-Ridley's "heart"? That's his weak point, but first you have to pierce its casing. A couple Super Missiles will do it, but you have to jump up to make Meta-Ridley raise his head to expose it. Meta-Ridley has a bevy of painful attacks that you should try to avoid at all costs. These include throwing balls of fire at you (jump over them), shooting lasers at you (either duck or jump over it, depending on where it's fired), slashing out at you with its claw (jump over it), and firing missiles at you (shoot them for power-ups). When you've destroyed the casing around Meta-Ridley's heart, step up the attacks and pump more Super Missiles into the core itself, whenever it's exposed. If you have a decent supply of Super Missiles, Meta-Ridley won't be able to prevent its inevitable demise. Just keep firing away at its core until Meta-Ridley succumbs to death.
Surprise, surprise…a final countdown to a total self-destruct! You now have five minutes to make it to the yellow ship on your map, back in the Battleship hangar in the lower-right section of the ship. The route there has already been revealed on your map through your travels, and any other rooms off this path will be sealed off, though oftentimes you may need to lay down a Power Bomb to reveal a new path through a room. Don't panic, and don't worry about getting killed, because the way will be enemy-free, save for a pair of Armored Space Pirates at the end of the escape route. Once you've killed them, go through the emergency shutter and jump into the Battleship. Fly off to freedom!
And that, dear friends, is Metroid: Zero Mission. The final picture displayed after the closing credits will vary depending on how many items you collected throughout the game and fast you completed it.
