Play As Luigi
When selecting a file press and hold the L + R buttons then press A to select your saved game. You will now play as Luigi instead of Mario.
Save Anytime
When you beat the final castle in World 8 and restart the game you will have a star next to your save slot. Now when you play on that file, a Save option will appear in the menu screen.
Warp Cannons
World 5 Warp #1: Use the Alternate Exit of Level 1-Tower
World 5 Warp #2: Use the Alternate Exit of Level 2-A
World 6 Warp: Use the Alternate Exit of Level 3-Ghost House
World 7 Warp: Use the Alternate Exit of Level 4-Ghost House
World 8 Warp: Use the Alterante Exit of Level 5-Ghost House
Unlockable Worlds
World 4: Beat Level 2-Castle as Mini-Mario
World 7: Beat Level 5-Castle as Mini-Mario
Getting all 3 stars on your save game file
The first Star is given to you after you complete the game. This will allow you to save the game at any time while on the map screen.
The second Star is awarded after you unlock and completes all levels, and finds all secret exits. This will also effect the toad houses that will no longer disappear after you have used them, with the exeption of the toadhouses that can be unlocked at the far left of each area.
The third and final start is awarded after you find and spend every singel star coin in the game (there are a total of 3 in each level). I do not believe that it has any effect on the gameplay.
Secret challenge mode
NSMB have a secret challenge mode that inables you to backtrack, just like you couldn't in the original Super Mario Bros. You enter the challenge mode by going into a save file that has completed the game and then pressing start on the map screen and inputting the following code: L, R, L, R, X(2), Y(2). If you input the code correctly, then a message will appear welcomming you to the challenge mode. You can exit the challenge mode by inputting the code again, or exiting the game.
