Area 1
You begin the game at your spaceship; return here whenever you wish to recharge your energy and missiles. Time to kill some Metroids! Go right from the ship down the hallway, then drop down through the gap to face some Mumbos and Hornoads. Shoot them with your beam, then blast through the blocks, dropping down to the bottom. Go right, shoot up through the next series of blocks, continue right, then blast down through even more blocks. Drop down all the way, then go left when you hit the bottom. When you reach the winding pit, take it all the way down and continue left to find the first Metroid, an Alpha Metroid. As with all Metroids, you have to kill it with missiles; five should do it. Only 38 Metroids left to go now! Head up and use the Energy/Missile Refill, then go back right. Climb back up the winding pit, then go right to where you dropped down through the blocks. We're heading right this time. Use the Save Point there, then go right to enter Area 2.
Area 2
Bombs
Head right, jumping over the pools of acid, then go down and right through two rooms. Continue on the path above the sand and enter the room to the right. Climb up to the top here, then proceed right through the hallway to a vertical shaft. Ascend it, continue right through another room, then right again into the next room. Use the Save Point there, then head right to another vertical shaft, this one heading down. Drop to the bottom of it and go left to a red door. Blast it with five missiles, then head through to find your first power-up: the Bombs! These are used in morph ball mode. Let's use one right away. Lay a bomb on the floor here to the right of the statue, then drop down to find a Missile Expansion. Excellent.
Ice Beam
Now head right to the vertical shaft and climb it until you're about halfway up. Take the path to the right and roll through the tunnel to find an Energy Tank. Grab it, then proceed right. You'll be in the middle of a tall vertical shaft. Go to the bottom of the shaft, then head left to find another missile door. Blow through it, then head left all the way to find the Ice Beam, which can freeze enemies, turning them into veritable platforms for you!
Spider Ball
Return to the last shaft, then climb it about three-fourths of the way and go through the upper of the two paths that shoot off to the right. Continue right, beneath the shell of the Metroid, then drop down the gap to find the Spider Ball. When used in morph ball mode (press down one more time), you can climb walls! Use it now to climb back up the hole, then return to that Metroid shell. Spiderball up the wall by the shell and head right to find the next Alpha Metroid. Missile that fiend, then go back, drop down by the shell, and keep going left to reach the vertical shaft again. Go down to the other path on the right wall and take it to a room with a whopping three Missile Expansions. You need to bomb through the lighter blocks to get the ones on the ground, then spiderball up to the one above and bomb through to reach it.
Now head left to return to the shaft, then take it to the path going back left. Roll through the tunnel to reach the Save Point again, use it, then head left to the next room and spiderball up the wall. Bomb through the rock to the right, then go through to find two Missile Expansions. Now go back left to where you spiderballed up the wall, drop down to the floor, and head left until you reach the vertical shaft. Take it all the way down, then head right to the next room through the sand. Head as far right as you can, then drop down the little shaft. Go right over the platforms to find another Alpha Metroid. Missile it! Now go left all the way past the little shaft, then drop down the next little shaft and go right. Another Alpha Metroid; kill it post haste. Now go left all the way to find another Alpha Metroid; you know what to do. That subsequent earthquake indicates that the level of the acid above has dropped, opening a new route for us. Head back up the two little shafts and head left to the vertical shaft. Head up and take the route to the left, dropping down through the next shaft and continuing left to where the acid was previously. Drop down through this pit now to reach Area 3.
Area 3
Varia Suit
When you reach the Metroid egg in the acid, head left and climb up the vertical shaft. Proceed left over the sand to find an Alpha Metroid ready for the slaughter. Keep going left to find a Save Point, then continue left through the next room. Watch out for the Autrack here! Quickly freeze it before it makes mincemeat of your health gauge. Continue left to the next room, which has another Save Point. Go ahead and use it anyway, then go left to the next room. Jump into the water here and go through the lower-right path. Go right to the wall, then spiderball up it to find a Missile Expansion. Now head back down and go to the bottom of this shaft, then roll through the false wall on the right to find an Alpha Metroid. Kill it, then leap up to the left ledge and roll through the hidden passageway, bombing your way through to find another Missile Expansion. Leave the tunnel, then spiderball up through the narrow shaft to find a missile door. Blast through it and enter. Go left, bomb through the floor, then bomb your way through the blocks in the tunnel to find the Varia Suit, which increases your speed and decreases the amount of damage you take from enemies.
Wave Beam
Now go right and drop back down the hole. Drop into the water and head left, back up the shaft, then left again until you're out of the water. Go back to the Save Point, use it, then go left and spiderball up the wall on the right (left of the save room). Bomb through the block up there, then go right to find another Alpha Metroid. Kill the bugger, then bomb through the floor and head right. Bomb up through the next block and roll through the tunnel, dropping down into the chamber. Bomb through the left wall to find a missile door. Blast through it, then go through to claim the Wave Beam, which is much stronger and wider than the Ice Beam.
High Jump Boots
Roll back right through the tunnel to the chamber and go right to a vertical shaft. Drop about halfway down the right side of this room, then go right through the false wall between the bricks. Fall down of this next shaft, then blast the missile door to the left. Go through to find the High Jump Boots, which let you (obviously) jump higher.
Spring Ball
Lay a bomb in the usual spot of the floor to blow open a gap, drop down, blow open the tunnel to the left, then roll through to reach a room with a Missile Expansion and an Energy Tank in it. Now head back right through the High Jump Boots room to the shaft, ascend it by spiderballing up the wall, go left, then drop to the floor of this shaft. Exit left, then take the two Missile Expansions from this room. Keep going left, fall down the short shaft, then head right to find another Missile Expansion. Go back up the short shaft and head right to the taller vertical shaft. Take it to the upper-left exit, then spiderball back up the tunnel in the ceiling again. Head left until you're out in the more open area again, then spiderball up the wall just above where you bombed through the block. Head right and drop into the pit, then fire your missiles at the door to open it. Go through and shoot the orb. The Arachnus will jump out and attack you, and if you try firing your Wave Beam or missiles at it, you'll see that they're ineffective. Instead, lay bombs on the ground so that they go off when Arachnus passes over them. Once Arachnus is gone, take the Spring Ball upgrade, which lets you jump in morph ball mode!
Leave this room and spiderball back up the tunnel. Head right off the ledge, spiderballing down the side of the wall and roll into the tunnel leading to a Missile Expansion. Take it, then go back out and drop down to the ground. Go left past the two Save Points now to the room with all the water, but don't jump in. Continue left to a vertical shaft, then climb it to the upper-right exit. Spiderball up the wall here, then bomb the block in the corner to open a gap. Keep bombing your way through to a Missile Expansion, then leave the tunnel and keep spiderballing across the ceiling and around to find another Alpha Metroid. Kill it, then drop out of this little room. Head left into the vertical shaft again and head to the bottom of it. Go right, and fall down the short shaft, then head to the right. Jump over the platforms to meet your first Gamma Metroid. These guys are a little further developed than the Alpha Metroids, and as such will take ten missiles to take down. Do so at a distance to avoid being shocked by its electricity attack. When it's dead, go left past the short shaft to find an Alpha Metroid. Waste it, then continue left, fall down this short shaft, then head right. Shoot through the sand to find another Metroid. Pump it full of missiles, then left a few rooms to find another Gamma Metroid. Kill it, then go left the rest of the way to find an Energy Ball that recharges your energy. That done, head back up to the "water room," then go right through the two save rooms and several rooms beyond them to the right. Go down the shaft and head right to find that the acid has lowered even further than before. Take this new route down to Area 4.
Area 4
Space Jump
Stop when you reach the next level of acid, then head right, and down through some twisty passages. Leap over the acid, and keep going right to a vertical shaft. Head up to the top of it and exit right, going through two rooms to the top of a cliff. Drop off the ledge, holding Left on the D-Pad, then shoot through the sand below to find a Missile Battery, which will refill your missiles to full capacity. Spiderball out of there and go right, spiderballing up the next wall. Continue right, then drop off the edge through the sand. Take the path going left into that giant rock, then jump up to find the Space Jump, which lets you jump over and over again midair!
Spazer
Head back outside of this big rock, then space jump right to the top of the even larger rock. Drop through the gap up here and shoot through the sand to find a Missile Expansion. Go left now to find a Save Point. Use it, then drop through the gap to the left. Continue left, blast through the missile door, then go through to find the Spazer, which will take the place of your Wave Beam and is even more powerful (and cuts through sand like a hot knife through butter). Don't get too attached to it, though, because it will outdated very soon by the…
Plasma Beam
Go back to the shaft to the right and go through the passage to the right, halfway up. Kill the Gamma Metroid up top here, then drop down and spiderball up the right wall and head through the hidden tunnel to find a Missile Expansion. Drop back down into the sand now, shoot down through it, then head left. Kill the Gamma Metroid, then continue left to a missile door. Blast through it, then grab the Plasma Beam, the strongest, most devastating weapon in the game.
Head back to the right, where you fell down from the sand, and continue right to find a Missile Expansion. Keep heading right, then space jump up the little shaft and head left. The Automs in here are invincible, so just try not to get shot by them. Spiderball up the left wall, bomb through the block, then head through the tunnel to find an Alpha Metroid. Piece of cake, blast it into oblivion, then keep going left to find an Energy Tank. Now go back to where you fell through the sand and go back up through it to the last Save Point you used. Get back on top of this humungous rock, then head right to find another gap you can fall down. Do so. Blast through the sand at the bottom and go right, then go down through this shaft to do battle with a Gamma Metroid. Once it's dead, head back up, then left to the shaft on the right of the humungous rock. Head up until you see a block you can bomb to the left. Spiderball onto the wall next to it, blow up the block with a bomb, then roll through to find an Energy Tank. Drop through the wall, then head right to find a Missile Expansion before emerging back on the outside of the rock. Now head all the way left in this large room and left through the corridor beyond to reach the vertical shaft.
This time, take the path halfway down the room to the right. You'll hit a Save Point, so use it, then fall into the pit. There's a path to the right about two-thirds of the way down on the right; go there and kill the Gamma Metroid within. Now shoot the cracked blocks to the lower-left and take that path right to another vertical shaft. Climb all the way to the room at the top and kill the Alpha Metroid. That leaves only 20 Metroids left! Shoot through the cobwebs to facilitate this duel. After it's dead, spiderball up the right wall and roll through the tunnel. Drop through the Metroid egg here, then go into the right room to find a Gamma Metroid. Kill it, then work your way back to the last vertical shaft and take the route to the right, about halfway down the shaft. Go right through this room to reach another very tall shaft, and drop all the way to the bottom of it. Head left into the next shaft and drop down to find a Gamma Metroid in need of some missiles. Ten, actually. Take the Energy Ball at the bottom of the room, then climb up and exit to the upper-left. Head left into the next room to kill another Gamma Metroid, then head up through the Metroid egg. Spiderball to the left, through the hidden passage, then jump up through the Metroid egg there. Head halfway up this shaft and take the left path to a Gamma Metroid. Kill it good, then head through the invisible path left and up. Leap over the acid, go left and then up through the twisty passage, then go all the way left. The way down is now open, so descend to Area 5.
Area 5
When you reach the bottom of this sloping path, head left past the Metroid egg through the acid-filled room, then go up at the end through another sloping path. Head right until you see a Gamma Metroid, then kill it. Now go all the way back to the first sloping path and take it up. Go right, then down the twisty passage to where you jumped over the acid last time. It's gone now, so head down this new route. It will curl back up, then split into two paths. Head left first, going up and then left to an acid-filled room. Make your way across it and go down to find an Alpha Metroid. Blast it to kingdom come, use the nearby Energy Ball to heal up, then go back past the acid room to the fork in the path. Go right this time, going up and over another lake of acid to a Gamma Metroid. Make it dead, then use the nearby Missile Battery to replace your missiles. Now leave this dual-forked location, going back up, heading left, climbing through the twisty passage again, then going left all the way. Head down the sloped path and you'll see that the acid level below has dropped. This new route leads to Area 6.
Area 6
Continue down this sloping path, then head left over the acid lake to a wall of blocks. Shoot through them, go through, jump over the lava (that'll be the eventual route to Area 7), then go up and left to reach a vertical shaft. Proceed left, kill the Gamma Metroid, then keep going left until you see a Metroid egg in the water. Drop through it and look in the lower-left corner for a Missile Expansion, then jump back up above the water. There's a lot of space above you, so…why not space jump? Do so, sticking close to the right wall, then go right through the passage when you reach it. Space Jump over the spike balls here as you head right and right through the sand, then get ready to meet your first Zeta Metroid. These guys are quite fast and will only go down after you've nailed them with 20, count 'em, 20 missiles. Keep your distance from it at all times when you're facing one. When it's dead, space jump back through the room and out the opening in the large open shaft.
Screw Attack
Continue Space Jumping up to the alcove to the upper-right. Stand on the ledge there and lay a bomb to reach the Missile Expansion, then go up and kill the Gamma Metroid above you. Only ten Metroids to go! Drop down now and space jump to the left, then up. Spiderball up this shaft on the left wall, and when you see the bombable block, bomb it. Go through to face another nasty Zeta Metroid, then go up through the tunnel in the ceiling. Bomb your way up and then left to find the last power suit upgrade in the game, the Screw Attack. This turns your space jump into a lean, mean, killing machine!
Return to where you fought the last Zeta Metroid and exit right to return to the very high vertical shaft. Space jump up to the top of this wall, then head left to a pit in the floor. Drop through, then bomb the floor for a Missile Expansion. Head up and go right this time, bombing your way through to find an Energy Tank on your way out of here. Now space jump to the ledge above and to the right, and head through a spike-filled room to face off against a Gamma Metroid in the sand. Head back to the ledge you space jumped to now, then spiderball up the wall above you to the ceiling. Bomb through the upper-right corner to open a gap, then roll through. Bomb and roll your way through this long tunnel, collecting an Energy Tank and Missile Expansion in the process (though if you've gathered all the Energy Tanks in this walkthrough, that last Energy Tank will be useless, as Samus can only have five of them). Drop out of the tunnel, then head to the very bottom of the left side of this gigantic area. You'll land in a pool of water, just so you know. Get out of it and go into the room on the left, avoiding the spikes to find a Zeta Metroid. Lay waste to it, then return to the vertical shaft and space jump to the next room on the right. Use the Save Point there, then continue up the main shaft to the next door on the left. Cross the room, kill the Gamma Metroid, then return to that last Save Point. Proceed right this time, down through this little shaft, and right. Return to where you last leaped over the lava to find that the way down has been cleared. Descend to Area 7.
Area 7
At the bottom of this first section of zig-zagging paths, head left. Leap over the acid pits, go down the next shaft, and past the next acid lake. The final area of the game is to the left, but you can't reach it yet. For now, you'll have to go up. Do so, then head right at the fork in the path. Continue right, then up two short shafts. Head left into the next room to face off against a petty Alpha Metroid, leaving only five Metroids to kill! Now go back to that fork and go left this time, heading up the shafts and going right into the same large room. This time there'll be an Omega Metroid for you to play with! These 'troids don't mess around; they've got the bloodlust something fierce. You have to shoot it in the face with thirty missiles to kill it, so keep jumping and firing until it finally goes down. The earthquake that follows signals that the route to the final area of the game has been opened, so head back to where you were stopped by the acid last time and step boldly into Area 8!
Area 8
Drop down, cross the acid lake, then head up until you reach a Save Point. Use it, of course, then head all the way to the top of this shaft and exit to the right. Another shaft, albeit a shorter one than the previous. Take the upper-left exit and jump left over the pillars to reach an Omega Metroid begging for thirty missiles to the face. Kill it, then return to the last shaft and head through the exit halfway down the right wall. More columns to hop over, including a large hole--remember that hole for later. Continue right for now over the remaining pillars to reach another vertical shaft. Drop to the bottom of it, then head right to another, smaller shaft. Drop to the bottom of it, then head left over the pillars to find an Omega Metroid. Kill it, then return to the previous, shorter vertical shaft. Take the path to the right this time, leap across the set of pillars, then kill the Omega Metroid at the end. Only Metroid to go! The last bit of acid has dropped now, so head back to the vertical shaft, climb it, exit to the left near the bottom of the next one, then leap over the columns to the large pit you passed by earlier. Drop into the hole, then follow the path as it curls up and goes left through some water pools. Continue up this path, avoiding the larger pools of water, as they can drop you back down to the first level, until you reach a Save Point. Use it, since it's the last one you'll ever see. Now space jump up through the gap and out of the water. Spiderball up the right wall to the ceiling, then left into the second divot in the ceiling to find an Energy Ball and Missile Battery. Recharge everything, then spiderball over to the next hole in the ceiling. Jump up and take the Ice Beam from behind the Chozo statue (don't worry, you're not downgrading; you want the Ice Beam now). Now head back down to the ceiling of the large room and spiderball to the next pit to the left. Go left, jump up the platforms, then go through the tunnel at the top. Hey, what gives? Turns out you have eight more Metroids to kill on top of the one you already had remaining.
Roll right and drop down to find the first of these new Metroids. Shoot it with the Ice Beam to freeze it, then hit it with five missiles to kill it. Head right into the shaft to find another one; kill it in the same fashion (along with the next six). Continue up the shaft and go right into another shaft to find two other Metroids. Deal with them, then exit left. There are two Metroids to kill in this long room as you head left, so execute them with extreme prejudice. There's a shaft going down at the end, with two more Metroids in it worthy of death. After you've taken them down, you really only one left to kill, but you know it's not gonna be as simple as the previous eight. Go right from the shaft, cross the room filled with spikes, then drop down the pit to face that final Metroid.
Queen Metroid
This is it, your final confrontation with the Metroids (for this game, at least). The Queen Metroid can lunge at you and shoot fire at you. Avoid the lunges by turning into a morph ball and rolling into the crack, and Screw Attack through the flames to avoid taking damage. It takes a whopping 100 missiles to kill the Queen Metroid, so if you're low on ammunition or health, roll through the crack and you'll be dropped down to the room where you found the last Ice Beam; from there you can go down to the ceiling of the large room and use the nearby Energy Ball and Missile Battery. The best time to attack the Queen Metroid is after she shoots her flames at you, or when it's lunging at you with its mouth open. You can also let it eat you, after which you should drop several bombs to damage it until it spits you back out.
When the Queen has finally bitten the dust, you'll be able to exit to the left. There you'll find a baby Metroid who thinks you're its mother! It follows you, eating the strange blocks out of your way so you can escape. Follow this route all the way back to the surface of the planet, then space jump right over the large rock. Drop down to your ship, get in, and take off into the stars. Congratulations, you've just completed Metroid II.
