When you’re traveling between towns, you’ll encounter other Pokémon Trainers. Most of the time, you’ll want to challenge these trainers to battles. By winning battles your Pokemon will get experience and you’ll get money.
You’ll also encounter wild Pokémon when traveling. You’ll want to either battle or capture some of these. By capturing wild Pokémon you’ll be able to add them to your team.
Speak to whoever you see. Many people give or sell you items that are useful in the game.
Heal your Pokemon often. Every time you enter a city, head to the Pokémon Center to heal your team. If you can, you’ll also want to heal before any big battles.
Always carry some healing and other potions, and buy more from Poké Marts whenever you’re running low.
If you can’t defeat a trainer, make sure you’re using the right Pokemon against it. See the Pokemon Game and Strategy Guide for more information. If you still have trouble, you might try leaving, leveling up your Pokémon, and coming back later.
