Pokemon: Leaf Green&Fire Red - GBA/Walkthrough
From WikiCheats
Pallet Town
First off, you’ll be asked to name your character and your rival. Choose whatever names you like; neither make a difference in terms of gameplay.
Once the game starts, go your PC and withdraw a healing potion.
Leave your house and walk North. You’ll soon see Professor Oak, who will give you one of three Pokémon.
- Bulbasaur is a Grass/Poison type. He is the most popular choice as he’s strong against the first two gyms you’ll encounter.
- Squirtle is a Water type.
- Charmander is a Fire Pokémon. Choose Charmander with caution, as he is weak against the types of Pokémon you’ll encounter in the first two gyms.
Now you’ll have to battle your rival. Throughout the game, whenever you battle your rival, which Pokémon they have depends on which Pokémon you just picked for yourself.
| For this battle | |
|---|---|
| if you picked… | Your rival will have… |
| Bulbasaur | Squirtle |
| Squirtle | Charmander |
| Charmander | Bulbasaur |
After the battle head north to Route 1. Along this route (or any route throughout the game) you may want to find and battle some wild Pokémon to gain experience. Along the way you’ll see a man who will give you a free potion if you talk to him. Keep heading north.
Viridian City
When you enter the city, you’ll want to find the Poké Center. Here you can you’re your Pokémon. You’ll also want to visit the Pokémart. Here you can buy all sorts of items that you’ll find useful in the game. Speak to the man there and he will give you a package to deliver. Take it back to Professor Oak in Pallet town. When you deliver it, Oak will give you a Pokédex. Speak to one of the professor’s assistants to get five free Pokéballs. Go north along Route 1 again. Go all the way to the north side of Viridian City. You’ll see an exit to the city and an old man who will show you how to capture wild Pokémon. He does forget to tell you one thing: always weaken the Pokémon before you try to capture it. When you’re done, head north along the route and try your hand at catching a few Pokémon.
You’ll want to venture outside of town in your search for Pokémon, but not too far. Keep at it until you have at least two Pokémon level 9 or higher.
When you’re ready, head back to Viridian and visit the Pokémon League. Here you’ll find your rival and he’ll want to battle again.
When you’ve defeated your rival, head through the Viridian Forest north to Pewter City. On the way you’ll encounter your first Pokémon Trainers. Not only do you get experience when you defeat them, but you’ll also get money.
Pewter City
First visit the Pokémon Center and heal your Pokémon.
When you’re ready head over to the gym. Here you’ll have to battle the gym to continue in the game.
- Camper Liam: Geodude level 10, Sandshrew level 11
If you had trouble with the Junior Trainer, level up your Pokémon and come back later.
- Gym Leader Brock: Geodude level 12, Onix level 14
When you defeat Brock you’ll get the Boulder Badge, TM 39 Rock Tomb, and a TM case.
Head east on Route 3. You’ll encounter another one of Professor Oak’s aides who will give you Running Shoes. At the end of the route you’ll find a Pokémon Center where you can buy a Magikarp.
Mt. Moon
As you enter you should see TM 09-Bullet Seed. On your way, you should also find TM 46-Thief
Super Nerd Miguel: Grimer level 12, Voltorb level 12, Koffing level 12 After you defeat Miguel, he will give you a fossil that can later be revived into a powerful Pokémon.
On the way out you’ll find two move tutors. One teaches Mega Punch, the other Mega Kick. The catch is, they will only teach it to one of your Pokémon during the entire game. You may not want to waste these moves on your current team. You can always come back later to learn these moves.
Cerulean City
To the northwest of the Poké Mart is a house, and in the backyard is a rare candy. This candy will give your Pokémon one additional level.
There is also a bike shop, but the bikes are too expensive at this point in the game. Don’t worry, you’ll get one later in the game.
You should also see a house with a police officer out front. You can’t go in yet, but remember the location for later.
After looking around and healing your Pokémon, head for the gym. The gym is located
- Swimmer: Horsea level 16, Shellder level 16
- Junior Trainer: Goldeen level 19
- Gym Leader Misty: Staryu level 18, Starmie level 21
Now that you’ve defeated the gym leader, head for the bridge.
At the bridge you’ll encounter your rival. As usual what your rival has depends on which Pokéman you chose at the beginning of the game.
- If you choose Bulbasaur you’ll fight: Pidgeotto level 17, Rattata level 15, Abra level 16, Charmander level 18
- If you choose Charmander you’ll fight: Pidgeotto level 17, Rattata level 15, Abra level 16, Squirtle level 18
- If you choose Squirtle you’ll fight: Pidgeotto level 17, Rattata level 15, Abra level 16, Bulbasaur level 18
When you defeat him, your rival will give you a fame checker and allow you onto the nugget bridge.
On the bridge is a series of five trainers and if you can defeat the final one, you’ll get a nugget worth $5000. You can’t do anything with the nugget, so sell it next time you’re at the Poké Mart.
Head east past the trainers and the maze and you’ll come to Bill’s house. Help Bill turn back into a human and he’ll give you a ticket for the S.S. Anne.
Head back to Cerulean City. There go to the house where you saw the police officer earlier. He’s no longer here, so you can go inside. Speak to the people there, then head out the back door. You should see a Rocket Team Grunt. Battle him and you’ll get TM 28 Dig.
Head south on Route 5 until you see a building on your right. Enter this building; it’s the entrance to Route 6, which is a tunnel that takes you to Vermillion City.
Vermillion City
Head over to the Pokémon Center and get a free Vs Seeker. This device allows you to rematch trainers you’ve battled.
In the house next to the Pokémon Center is a man who will give you a fishing rod.
As you explore the city, you’ll notice the gym in not accessible. You’ll need HM01: Cut to get inside.
S.S. Anne
Use the ticket you got from Bill to enter the S.S. Anne. After a number of trainers, your rival will challenge you to a battle. After the fight, find the captain. He will give you HM01: Cut, which you need to enter the gym. Explore the ship before you leave: once you get off the ship it sails away.
Side Trips
Visit the Pokémon fan club. Talk to the president, and listen to his story and he’ll give you a coupon for a free bike. Head over to Cerulean City and pick up your new bike.
If you want, head up Route 11. You’ll find several trainers you can battle for money and experience. You’ll also find Professor Oak’s aide. If you have 30 Pokémon in your Pokédex he’ll give you an Item Finder. Head back to town.
Head over to Pewter City. Near the entrance is a tree you can cut down. Enter and you’ll find someone who can teach you Seismic Toss. In this room you’ll also find a part of the Fame Checker. Now talk to the man in the corner who will tell you about Cinnabar Island and give you some Old Amber. You’ll use this later in the game with the fossil you already have.
The Vermillion City Gym uses electric Pokémon. You’ll want to use ground types, because they are immune to electric damage. If you don’t have a ground Pokémon, head east of town to Diglet’s cave and capture some. Keep going all the way through the tunnel and out the other side. Head over to Route 2 and then south to a building. Here you can pick up HM 05 Flash, which you’ll need a little bit later.
Vermillion City Gym
- Engineer Baily: Voltorb level 21, Magnemite level. 21
- Sailor Dwayne: Pikachu level 21, Pikachu level 21
- Gentleman Tucker: Pikachu level 23
If your Pokémon took some damage, you may want to heal them at the Pokémon Center and come back.
Before you battle the gym leader, you must first solve a puzzle. There are two switches located in trashcans. When you locate the first switch, you must activate the next switch with the next trashcan you open. If you open an empty trashcan, the switches reset and the first switch will have moved. One thing to remember is that the second switch is always one can to the left, right, up, or down from the first. Just keep flipping switches until you get it.

Lavender Town
The name rater is here. This person lets you change the name of any Pokémon you have captured. You cannot change the name of a Pokémon acquired by trade.

Celadon Department Store
On the roof is a vending machine. The drinks it dispenses are better and less expensive than most of the potions in the game. There is also a thirsty girl on the roof. If you give her one of each drink she’ll give you TM16, 20, and 33.

If you haven’t then you can go to the islands now. There are still several areas to explore, and you can work on collecting more Pokémon.
Sevii Island
The first section of these islands is open after you beat the Cinnabar Gym. The rest of the islands open after you’ve beaten the Elite Four. If you didn’t do this quest when Bill asked you to, you can still get it from him at the Pokémon Center on Cinnabar Island.

This cave is only accessible after you’ve beaten the Elite Four. At the end of the cave is the ruby Celio asked you to find.
Island 2
In the game center, talk to the man who rambles on about his lost daughter. After you speak to him, head over to island 3.
There is a move relearner in this town. If your Pokémon knew a move, then forgot it, hur can restore the move. You must pay him in mushrooms, and you can get them by using Thief against wild Paras.
On the north end of the island is Cape Brink. There are several version exclusive Pokémon here. Move tutor on the north end of the island.

You’ll encounter Lorelei, and you’ll battle some Rocket Team Grunts. After the battle Lorelei will ask you to find the password to the Rocket Warehouse. The password is found on island 6, so skip island 5 for now.
Island 6
Head east of town, and battle through the trainers you find there. Head north at the first fork in the path, and south at the second. Soon you’ll find a sealed cave door, use cut on it. There you’ll find series of holes. You’re supposed to translate the Braille writing in each room to figure out which hole to jump in. If you jump in the wrong hole, you’ll end up at the beginning. The correct order of holes is: North, West, East, South. At the end of the cave is the sapphire Celio on island one asked you to recover. Before you can take it, a scientist comes up and steals it from you. He does however tell you the second password, so head over to island five. If you recall, you learned the first password on island one, at the entrance to the cave to Mount Ember.
Island 5
First drop off one of your Pokémon at the Pokémon center and head east. Enter the water labyrinth and find the island with the trainer on it. Defeat him and he will give you an egg containing Togepi. You will only get the egg if you have an open slot on your team and your team leader is happy. Go back to town.
Head east from town and you’ll encounter a series of trainers. When you reach Five Island Meadow head south. You should find the Rocket Team Warehouse.
Battle your way through the warehouse.
When you beat Scientist Gideon you’ll receive the sapphire. Return it to Celio on island one and you’ll unlock the Elite Four rematches, the Cerulean Cave, and you can trade with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.
Before you leave island five, visit the Random Pokémon Girl. She’ll ask to see a random Pokémon, and if you have it in your Pokédex, you can bring it to her for a prize.
Island 7
From the town head southwest to a cave. There is a boulder puzzle there.
Head past the cave, to the water and keep going. You’ll encounter ruins, each with different types of Unown.

Island 9
This island is southeast of island three. Here you’ll find Deoxys.
Cerulean Cave
The cave entrance is located northeast of Cerulean City. To enter this cave you must first defeat the Elite Four and finish the island quests.
The prize at the end of the cave is the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. It’s a level 70 Pokémon, so you should only attempt to capture it with a very powerful team, or with your Master Ball.
