Azorean Sea
Fight the Pirates
After you choose your difficulty (Easy, Medium, or Hard), you'll be dropped down onto Captain Blackwater's pirate ship in the Azorean Sea. You're promptly attacked by the deceased Darkwater's robotic crew, giving you the chance to test out your fighting prowess. Approach your enemies here and attack them with your wrench (Square), and be sure to bust open all the crates here for bolts and Combuster Shots. If you take any damage, you'll also occasionally find some Health Nanotech to heal you. When you clear out this first area, head up the stairs and attach your wrench to the bolt crank on the right with the Square button, then turn it using the Left Analog Stick to open the nearby door.
Head inside to find some enemies carrying blasters and shooting at you. Do likewise by firing at them with your Combuster. When they're all gone, run outside, bust open the crates there, and climb the large blue ladder on the wall to the top by tapping the X button. Up top you'll face off against an electrified pirate. Don't bother attacking him with your wrench, as you'll only take damage from the electricity. Instead, attack at a distance with your Combuster until he's dead. Now go stand on the catapult up here and hit the X button to be launched to the next ship.
You'll land behind a pirate who doesn't see you. Aim your Combuster at him and fire to take him out, then shoot the red explosive barrels behind him to clear the way forward. Take out the next couple pirates, then look right for a pirate manning a turret. Run up to him and beat him to death, take out any other pirates in the area, then stand behind the turret and press Triangle to man it. Shoot the pirates on the ship across from you with the R1 button, then aim the turret at the door up the stairs to blast it open. Dismount and head through the opening, and take out the pirate manning the turret in there. Man the turret and blow holes in the three other doors here, continuing to fire upon any pirates behind them. Run outside, gather up the bolts, then climb the blue ladder to the upper level of this ship. Kill the pirates there, bust open more crates for Combuster Shots and bolts, then ride this catapult to the next ship.
You'll land in a cannon. Watch the cut scene, wherein you're blasted off to Hoolefar Island.
Hoolefar Island
Explore Hoolefar Island
If you open your inventory, you'll see that it's been drastically reduced, leaving you with only your Grindboots, Gravity Boots, Omniwrench, and Swingshot.
In any case, head forward up the steps from your starting position, then double-jump over the gaps until you reach the gravity rail. Your Gravity Boots will allow you automatically walk up it. You'll soon reach an area with some rather large crabs, so kill them, then continue up the rail, avoiding the vents when steam comes shooting out of them. At the end of the rail, jump toward the floating target in the air and press Circle to latch onto it with your Swingshot. Release the button when your swing has carried you over the gap, then head into the cave.
You'll reach a pit. There's a retracted bridge on the other side, so hold R2 and press the Square button to extend a tractor beam to the other side, then pull the bridge out with the Right Analog Stick. Cross it, then approach the spring on the other side. Stand a little ways back from it, then press R2 and then Square to latch onto it. Move the Right Analog Stick to pull the spring down, then jump onto it for a boost to the ledge above. There, jump to the zipline to ride down to the beach. You'll meet Mayor Barnabus Worley down there, so feel free to ask him any questions burning in your mind. You'll learn that they have a supply beacon that was recently vandalized, and the Mayor hints that you can help repair it. Agree to the task and he'll tell you to get on top of the turbines and use your wrench to get them working again.
Repair the Wind Turbines
Hop up the steps toward the large red tower in the center here to find the Wind Turbine Operator. Speak to him about the sabotaged turbines and agree to help.
Wind Turbine Alpha
This red tower here is Wind Turbine Alpha. Hop up the platforms until you reach a spring, pull it down like you did before with R2, Square, and the Right Analog Stick, and let it bounce you up to the next level. Continue around the tower, avoiding the steam vents, and start climbing the blue ladders. Steam vents will continue to periodically slow your progress here, so just don't move too hastily and you'll be fine. Eventually you'll reach another spring, so pull it down, then let it bounce to the top of the turbine, where there's a bolt crank. Hold the Square button, then move the Left Analog Stick to reset the turbine. You'll automatically be transported back to the ground afterward.
Press the Select button now to see a map of this island. There are four other turbines that need repairing: Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. You may as well do them in order, so to those of you who don't know your Greek, that means that Wind Turbine Beta is next. Head there, east of the Alpha Turbine (go southeast past Wind Turbine Gamma, then northeast across the bridge).
Wind Turbine Beta
Walk up the gravity ramp and start winding your way up the tower, dodging the hot steam whenever it appears. You'll soon be at the top, where the bolt crank awaits. Get the turbine running again, then head back over the bridge with the spinning blades to reach Wind Turbine Gamma.
Wind Turbine Gamma
Head up the gravity ramp to find some spinning buzzsaws you can simply jump over. Just past the first pair, latch onto the bolt to the right with R2 and Square, then pull down the platform with the Right Analog Stick. Continue along the gravity ramps, jumping over all the buzzsaws and pulling down more platforms until you reach the top.
With Gamma repaired, head north past the Beacon to find a series of revolving platforms. Carefully make your way across these to reach Wind Turbine Delta.
Wind Turbine Delta
At the turbine itself, latch onto the spring, pull it down, then let it bounce you up when the blue flames aren't shooting out of the tower. Grab hold of the rail above and move right, drop down with R2, then latch onto the bolt here to make a platform you can easily cross (or just double-jump over it). Continue right, level out the platform there, then jump past the flames to the solid platform. Head around to the walls that are close together and Wall Jump between them (jump toward a wall and hit X as you touch the wall, then keep tapping X to ascend). Level out a couple more platforms, jump past the flames, then use the spring to reach the top.
Wind Turbine Epsilon
Wind Turbine Epsilon is located on a solitary island to the southeast. Near Turbine Delta you'll find a raised catapult. Pull it down and let it launch you over the water, then head around to find a locked gate. You need something explosive to get through it, so go grab one of the nearby flaming rocks with the Square button and launch it at the gate with the Circle button to knock it down. Head through, swing over the gap (jump toward the target and hold Circle to swing across), and land on the next island.
Chuck a flaming rock through the gate across the water, then swing through and drop onto the rail, which you'll ride. Jump over the electrical rings as you ride, and when it looks like your rail's about to dump you in the water, tap X and hold left on the Left Analog Stick to jump to a different rail. Ride this one around a ways and jump right to the next rail you see. Continue up, then jump right onto the next rail, which takes you in a loop. Grab the flaming rock with the Square button as you go past it, and when you reach the previous rail, jump back onto it and launch the rock through the gate ahead with Circle. Ride this rail down toward a group of two rings and before you reach them, jump right to the next rail, and right to the one after that. Jump back to the left when this one ends, and when you reach the end of this one, jump toward the floating target and hold Circle to swing over the gap to the next rail. You'll see a gate ahead and another loop rail to the right of this one, so jump to that rail, then left to the next loop, which has another flaming rock. Grab it, jump back to the first rail, and launch it at the gate so you can ride through. Be prepared to swing across on the target just after the gate! Now ride the rest of this rail to a catapult that ever-so-nicely launches you directly to the top of Wind Turbine Epsilon!
Find the Beacon
Now that all five turbines have been repaired, you can tackle the Supply Beacon. Ride the series of rails back to the mainland, then head to the Supply Beacon, which you passed earlier on your way to Wind Turbine Delta. When you reach it, speak to the Beacon Operator and you'll learn that someone stole the Beacon's bolt. He suggests you speak to the person selling one on the beach
Find the Guy with the Beacon Part
Head south to the beach now. You'll find the smuggler selling the bolt just east of the pier; speak to him about doing repairs on the island, then ask him about buying "his" VersaBolt. Purchase it for 10,000 bolts. If you don't have enough bolts, run around the island and bust open more crates until you do.
Repair the Beacon
Head back to the Supply Beacon now and speak to the Beacon Operator, and he'll reattach the bolt. Grab onto it with Square, then turn it with the Left Analog Stick to raise this platform to the Beacon's height. Grab the bridge across the gap, pull it toward you, and cross it to reach the Beacon tower itself.
Yellow lasers move up and down here, and most of the Beacon wall itself is electrified, but there is one blue tile that's both movable and safe to walk on. Latch onto it with R2 and Square, then move it from its starting position to the space three squares up. Drop it there, then head around the gravity platform to the right so that you can jump left to the safe tile, and then left again to another gravity platform. Latch onto the blue safe tile again, move it so that you can jump from it to the next gravity platform up, then follow the ramp up to the top of the Beacon, where you can grab the bolt and repair it.
Find the Mayor
Head to the door shown in the cut scene (just north of the beach) and go through to the find the Mayor. He'll show you the Obsidian Eye, a powerful telescope, and then Darkwater's journal, which tells you about his cursed treasure. This is where you'll find the Fulcrum Star, which is what you need to use the Obsidian Eye properly.
Meet Rusty Pete at the Beach
Head down to the pier now to speak with Rusty Pete about Darkwater's treasure map, which is located with Darkwater's body. Agree to depart to Morrow Caverns at once!
Morrow Caverns
Find the Body of Captain Darkwater
Move forward through the cave until you find a bolt crank, and turn it to open the nearby door. The door will slam shut before you have a chance to go through, so follow Rusty Pete around to another door, which he opens with Slag's severed head. Follow Pete to the bridge, which is currently impassable, then follow him to a rail that you can shimmy across. Drop down on the other side. If you try to go through the dark cavern ahead, the bugs there will attack, so go right instead and pick up one of the glowing green grubs. Carry it into the dark cavern to find a bolt crank. Set the grub down and turn the crank to lower the bridge, then pick up the grub again and head across. Stand on the little outcropping by the rail here and press Circle to chuck the grub across the pit to light up the opposite side, then shimmy across the rail to join him.
Climb the ladder here, then jump on the rail. Ride it down, jumping over the gap, until you're dumped off on the other side of the raised bridge. Use the bolt crank here to lower the bridge and allow Rusty Pete to cross. He'll open the way forward into an elevator. Ride it down, then exit at the bottom. An enormous bug will erupt from the water, but you can't kill it just yet, so run right, pick up a glowing grub, then head in the other direction, into the dark cave. Turn the bolt crank there to open the door to Darkwater's Tomb.
Darkwater's Tomb
You can't reach the ship from here, so head left. The giant bug will pop up and shoot fire at you again, so keep running until you reach a revolving platform. Latch onto it and level it out, then quickly jump across to the other side. Continue forward to the next gap to find two platforms you can latch onto and move. Arrange them so that you can jump across them to reach other side, and dodge the giant bug's flames whenever it appears. Jump over the next gap and move forward to find a little glow-grub nest. Bust open all the crates in the area, then grab one of the cute little guys and head into the dark cavern beyond. Scare off the bugs, then make your way across the narrow bridge. Be careful--there's an explosive proximity crate halfway across that will explode shortly after you get near it, so trigger its countdown and back off until it blows up before proceeding.
When you reach the rail, ride it down, jumping to the next rail when necessary. The giant flame-shooting bugs will show up again, but you can ignore them; just keep focusing on making your jumps until you're dropped off on solid ground. Keep holding your grub aloft as you head into the next, darker room. Set off the explosive crates here, then set the grub down and turn the bolt crank to raise the platform to the next level. More of those accursed giant bugs will show up here periodically, so dodge their flames as you pull down the catapult near them and let it launch you to Darkwater's ship. Turn the bolt crank here to extend the bridge for Rusty Pete. Watch the cut scene that follows, after which you'll get your Combuster and Fusion Grenade back.
Escape Morrow Caverns!
Well, Darkwater's curse has been released, leaving you to deal with it as you try to escape the caverns. Ghost pirates will be spawning in regularly, so gun them down, then head forward and latch onto the bridge across the pit to extend it toward you before more pirates show up. Cross the bridge, pull down the catapult on the platform, and let it fling you up to a ledge. Proceed up the path and drop down the other side to reach the door where you first entered Darkwater's tomb. Run through and get back on the elevator, riding it up to the next level.
Exit and get ready to kill the Pythor--one of those giant bugs that's been harassing you the whole way. Hit it with a Fusion Grenade to kill it quickly. Approach the locked door now and chuck a Fusion Grenade at it to blow it open, then run through. Head down and more ghost pirates will attack. Kill them all, then blow through the next locked door to proceed to where Talwyn is being held. Destroy the gate to her cell, then immediately look left and hurl a Fusion Grenade at the wall of crates there to reveal a Pyrocidic Precipitation upgrade for your Combuster. Head up the stairs now to return to your ship, then hit Triangle to return to Hoolefar Island.
Hoolefar Island, Part 2
Head forward and you'll meet up with the Mayor, who will give you the Tornado Launcher and the Shock Ravager. The undead pirates will show up then, leaving you alone to deal with them!
Battle the Undead Pirates
Take down the first few waves of pirates, then get ready to dodge some cannon fire from their ship. Continue attacking the pirates until the "defense station" pops on the pier, then run to it and man the turret. Hold down the R1 button for rapid fire and take aim at the three cannons on the side of the pirate ship, shooting each one when they open up to fire on you. They'll take a few direct hits to take down. When all three are destroyed, run back to the door to the Obsidian Eye chamber and take out the pirates there.
A very large robot will appear then and start shooting at the door. Hurl some Fusion Grenades at it from behind, then smack it with your wrench to finish it off. More pirates will appear then, so take them out. When the ones protected by large shields show up, use the Tornado Launcher on them to destroy them easily. When a second large robot shows up, chuck any remaining Fusion Grenades at it, then switch to another weapon to finish it off, running circles around it as it fires at you. Deal with the next bunch of pirates until the turret on the pier appears again, then use it to take out the three cannons on the side of the ship again. Remember, there's no penalty for holding R1 for rapid fire! Once those three cannons go down, the pirates will flee!
Find a Translator
You must speak to the Smuggler next to the pier and hire him to guide you to Darkwater Cove for the low, low price of 12,500 bolts. If you've been shooting any crates you've come across, you should have more than enough bolts to pay him.
Before you do this, though, jump into the water and hit the Square button to dive. Hold R1 for a boost and head left past the four mines to find a cave. Destroy the gate here with a Fusion Grenade, pick up a glow grub, then head through the door to find some Concussion Detonators for your Nano Swarmers. Destroy the next gate with a Fusion Grenade, head through, and grab the Voltage Multiplier for the Shock Ravager.
Darkwater Cove
Search for Clues
Upon arrival, the Smuggler will give you your Predator Launcher and Nano-Swarmers back. Nice! You should now everything you started the game with. Time to find some clues. Head forward onto the mainland and approach the door with the pirate skull on it. Speak to it, and announce that you are Captain Darkwater. You'll be asked to fight a small army of crabs, but the door will open after you've killed them all. Go through, and take note of the large skull across the lagoon, as it's your ultimate destination.
Solve the Riddles of Darkwater
There are paths branching to the left and right of this spot, so start by taking the path on the left (if you're facing the large skull). Jump across the platforms in the green water, but be quick about it, because they'll start sinking as soon as you step on them! Pull down the catapult at the end and let it launch you onto a trio of sinking platforms. Quickly latch onto the nearby platform and pull it right before you sink, then jump through. Hop across the next string of sinking platforms, and pull down the spring at the end before you sink. Get on top of it, but don't hit the jump button yet. Instead, rotate the camera until you see a fence-like structure between you and a grind rail. Now hit the jump button and launch toward it. Once you land on the structure, hop over the platforms to find the Gyro Turbine for the Tornado Launcher. Now get on the spring here and let it bounce you up to the ledge above, where you'll find the Angstrom's Tune puzzle.
Angstrom's Tune
Note that there are four "keys" on the main device here; from left to right, we'll number these 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Start by speaking to the pirate's skull to the left of the main device to learn the first part of the tune that you must play to unlock the puzzle:
1, 2, 3, 4, 1
Now use the green jump pad in front of the main device to float up to the keys, and jump on them in the order listed above. You'll then be asked to play the second part of the tune:
1, 2, 4, 1, 2, 3
Repeat it on the keys, then play the final part of the tune:
1, 4, 3, 2, 1, 4
One puzzle down, two to go. Ride the rail back to the center of the island, then take the path to the right of your viewpoint of the large skull. Head to the end of the pier and jump across the rising and falling platforms in the water until you've reached a swing target, then swing across to solid ground. Jump up to the ledge, grab a glow grub here, and fling it over the water to scare off the bugs on the other side. Now stand on one of the two floating platforms here, face the other platform, and lock onto it. Move it forward with the Right Analog Stick, then jump to it and do the same with the first platform. Repeat this process until you've reached the other side.
Bring the glow grub with you as you jump to the next platform. Continue jumping up the platforms until you reach the top, then ride the zipline down to the next puzzle, Angstrom's Brew.
Angstrom's Brew
There are four dispensers here; from left to right, they're colored blue, yellow, green, and red. Speak to the Bartender to get things rolling. You need to step on the dispenser switches in the proper order, so ask for the first drink:
A bit of the bubbly, a chill to the bone. Top it with a twister, and send a happy pirate home.
If you look at the four dispensers, you'll see that the yellow tank is bubbling, the blue tank is frozen, the green one is swirling like a twister, and the red one is burning like fire. So, to match up with the riddle, the order is: Yellow, Blue, Green.
Second Drink: A dash of a cyclone, a drop of hot fire, a wee bit of bubbly makes an honest man a liar. Answer: Green Red, Yellow.
Third Drink: A pinch of lubber's greed, a dash of winter's sorry. Top it off with golden sun... Answer: Green, Blue, Yellow.
The second puzzle is complete! Hop down the platforms and return to your viewpoint to find enough platforms to reach the large skull. Hop up there to find the third puzzle, Angstrom's Shadow.
Angstrom's Shadow
When you speak to the pirate skull here, you'll learn that you need to manipulate the three metal figures here to project a shadow of Angstrom's face onto the wall ahead. Move the two eyepieces first, matching up the eye holes with the eye holes on the wall ahead. You'll know they're in the right position when the eye holes on the wall start to glow blue. Once the two eye pieces are in place, move the final chin piece into position to finish the job.
Fight Like a Pirate!
You'll have to battle some undead pirates afterward, nothing you can't handle. Some will be unreachable on the ledges above to the left and right, so be sure to shoot them down with Combuster shots. Use Fusion Grenades and other weapons like your Predator Launcher to take out the large robot at the end.
Escape the Deadly Caves
Lythion Caverns
Tricked again! You'd think Ratchet would be a little more cautious after everything he's experienced, but it would seem he has the short-term memory of a three-year-old.
Anyway, head forward to find a Pythor in need of a good whuppin'. Fire your Predator Launcher at the giant bug until it dies, then go left with your glow grub in hand and walk around ledge to find the Zero-Kelvin Laser Diode upgrade for the Nano-Swarmers. Return to where you defeated the last Pythor now and go right, latch onto the bridge across the gap, and extend it toward you. Cross it, wall jump up the two walls when the flames go down, bust the crates to the right, then head left. Time to do some shimmying. Move across the bar when the flames aren't spewing, then make your way up to solid ground.
Grab a glow grub here, stand on the ledge with the swing target just beyond it, and hurl the grub over the gap to scare off the bugs on the other side. Swing across afterward, then take out the pirates waiting there. Bust open all the crates there, then take your grub and head right to scare off more bugs and fight more robots. Break open the crates here, then head across the nearby bridge. Another Pythor will attack, so nail it with your Predator Launcher until it's dead, then use the bolt crank to move the bridge.
Cross the bridge with your grub in hand to find more pirates to kill. When they're all dead, grab your glow grub and carefully make your way across the narrow bridge beyond (if you need another grub, manipulate the platforms to the right to reach a nest). Your grub will scare off any bugs here. When the path splits, go left first to find a little treasure trove of crates, then go back and take the right path. At the ledge, latch onto the platform and pull it right to level it out, then repeat this with the next two platforms. You'll be under fire from the pirate on the ledge above, so you'll have to dodge his attacks as you do this (for some reason, you can't shoot him from here, even though you can aim at him...stupid programmers.)
When you reach the top, take out that annoying bastard, then look left for a locked door. Locked...to anyone without some explosives, that is! Chuck a Fusion Grenade at it, then head in to find more crates to destroy. On the left side of this room, partially obscured by some invincible boxes, is a spring you can use to reach the upper ledge, where you'll find some nice Dual Target Detectors for your Predator Launcher.
Head back out through the door and jump across to the platform with all the flaming robots on it. Cross the nearby bridge to take out their launchers first, finish off the little pots, then use the bolt crank to move the bridge around. Cross it and jump down at the end to face the boss of Darkwater Cove, a large pirate.
| BOSS: Large Pirate
This guy's fighting style changes depending on your proximity to him. If you're far away, he'll fire large sphere at you, some of which explode after a short time. If you're up close, he'll repeatedly slam down his magnetic arm, sending shockwaves that you can't dodge unless you run in the opposite direction from them. You'll also have to avoid the steam jets placed around the arena as you're doing battle. Obviously, the best way to fight this boss is to do it at a distance, where you can fire your Predator Launcher at him while easily dodging his rolling spheres. After you get his health bar to about the halfway, some pot-launcher enemies will appear on the ledges above. You can shoot them down from here if you want to, but they're not much of a threat, so you can just ignore them and continue to fire upon the boss until he's dead. |
Move forward into the elevator now and ride it up to the surface. Ride the rail here down to the beach, then get on your ship and tell the Smuggler to follow the pirate fleet. You can also buy the Alpha Cannon from the Smuggler for 50,000 bolts, if you like.
Azorean Sea, Part 2
Recover the Fulcrum Star
Cross the plank to the first ship for a cut scene with Slag, after which you must fight him!
| BOSS: Slag
Slag flies around the area, firing his weapon at you and occasionally coming up close to slash at you with his sword. If you bought the Alpha Cannon from the Smuggler earlier, a few blasts from this will send Slag packing...for now. |
Pirates appear from the nearby room, so cut them up, then head inside to speak to your captured friend. She suggests chucking one of those green pirate skulls at the energy field holding her, so do so to break her out. Follow her outside and up the ladder on the left. Kill the pirates up there, pull down the catapult, and launch to the next ship, where you must face a much larger and more fearsome version of Slag!
| BOSS: Slag, Part 2
Slag is impervious to your attacks at the moment, so for now, just focus on jumping over the green beams of energy that roll across the deck after he slams down his enormous swords. Eventually he'll summon his undead crew to attack you. Kill them, pick up one of their glowing green skulls, and hurl it at Big Slag to shrink him down to size. Now target him with your Predator Launcher and fill him full of missiles until he flees. |
Cross the plank to the ship now, then ride it to the next one. You'll face an electrified pirate in here, so be sure to hit him with projectile attacks and not melee ones! If you stand outside, beyond the door, he'll have a heck of a time trying to get at you. When he's gone, bust open the nearby crates, then head down the hall to fight more pirates. Use the bolt crank here to reach the upper deck, and a third battle with Slag.
| BOSS: Slag, Part 3
Not much to this fight. Slag flies around, firing his weapon at you as usual. Just keep targeting him with your Predator Launcher and pump him full of missiles until he slags off (sorry, couldn't resist). |
Take care of the pirates coming out of the newly-opened door here, using the Tornado Launcher to take care of any shielded ones, then head inside. Take out the pirates here, grab a pirate skull, and hurl it at the imprisoned electrified pirate to free him and open the door behind it (if you need to replenish any lost ammo, head back out through the door you came in and bust open the regenerating ammo crates there). Pull down the catapult and let it launch you to the next ship. Send the pirate at the prow here flying to his doom, then cross the plank to the next ship over. Kill the pirates here, then run toward the edge of the next plank and jump toward the swing target. Hit Circle to swing to the next target, release the button and hit Circle again, then do the same for the third target. Drop onto the plank of the next ship, kill the pirates there, then latch onto the swing target beneath Rusty Pete's vessel and let him carry you to the final battle with Slag.
| FINAL BOSS: Slag, Part 4
Slag's big again, so just dodge his sword attacks until he summons his undead pirates. Kill them, then chuck their skulls at Slag to make him susceptible to your attack (note that it will take a few skulls to fully weaken his defenses). Fire your Predator Launcher until he gets big again, dodge more sword attacks, kill the pirates when they appear again, and chuck a skull at Slag to drop his defenses. Nail him with more Predator missile until he finally kicks the bucket. |
The Fulcrum Star is yours! Watch the game's closing cut scenes to what new adventures lie in store for Ratchet!
