York

The Gauntlet

The year is 1951. Biological experiments in Russia have unleashed a virus upon Eurasia, transforming people into what are now known as Chimera: bloodthirsty, savage creatures capable of administering death with frightening aptitude. You, the aptly-named Sergeant Nathan Hale, are just one of several American soldiers sent in to clean up the disaster.

Head to the top of the crater when you gain control of Hale to find a few your allies fighting off a legion of Hybrids. Help take them out and forward, staying right and taking out the Hybrids as they appear. Run past the downed helicopter and a few automobiles until more soldiers drop in to lend you their firepower. Follow them down the road to the courtyard of a building and take out the Hybrids there before heading inside. Head upstairs, kill all the Hybrids, then go back downstairs to grab the York: Guidelines Intel next to one of the corpses. Now go back upstairs and drop down to the alley. Grab the M5A2 grenades from one end of the alley, then run the other way to find the Bullseye weapon, which can tag enemies and allow you to fire at them around a corner. Keep moving forward until some Hybrids start firing at you next to a bus; take cover behind the barriers on the left and fire back with the Bullseye, or better yet, chuck one of those grenades you just picked up and have it ricochet off the bus to their position. Keep your eye out on the left side of the alley for the York: Infection Intel, and when you regroup with some soldiers, follow them to end the first level.

A Lone Survivor

Hale now has the ability to regenerate a quarter of his life bar, so long as he can avoid taking damage for a short period of time. As you move forward, you'll be attacked by Leapers, so take them out at a distance to avoid their fearsome mandibles and protect your allies. Shoot down the Hybrids firing at you from the top of the building ahead, and collect the York: Regeneration Intel as you ascend the stairs to the building. You can find the York: Isolationism on the ground floor here, then start making your way up the stairwells to the top of the building. Take out the Hybrids there until you're back on the street level next to a tank. Since no one seems to be utilizing this wonderful piece of artillery, you might as well take it for a spin. Climb aboard and start blasting away the Hybrids, taking particular care to wipe out the ones carrying anti-tank weapons first. Roll your tank through the remainder of the level.

Spires

Head left at the level's outset, shoot the Hybrid on the stairs, then head down the steps and up the next flight. Take the York: Landing Intel, then use the buses in this open area to shield yourself from the three turrets the Hybrids are firing at you and your men. Toss some grenades toward the machine guns to clear out the Hybrids, then use the now-unmanned turrets to clear out the immediate area before heading to the next turret. After you clear all three groups of Hybrids more of them will swarm the area; get on top of the bus depot and snipe them one by one to end the level.

Grimsby

Fates Worse Than Death

You'll meet the Menials here for the first time, zombie-like Chimera that move slow but still attack if they happen to notice you. Don't waste bullets on them; instead just hit them with your melee attack and they'll go down. Open the door with the switch here to meet with Parker (incidentally, the game's narrator). Head out of the room and through the facility, shooting the Hybrids and other enemies you come across until you see a corridor on the left. Head into it and find the Grimsby: Conversion Intel in the bathroom. Now flip the power switch next to the elevator to give it some juice (if it isn't flipped already), then hop inside and take it up to the factory.

Head through the factory and run outside, but watch out, as the whole area is populated by mines that appear when you pass close to them and shoot beams of energy at you. Shoot them when this happens, and head towards the stairs, making sure to grab the Rossmore 236 shotgun beneath the stairs before heading up them. Break the boxes to clear the way, then drop down when you can and blast the mines that pop up. You'll come across more Menials and Hybrids here, simple targets for you, surely. When you reach the second warehouse, head to the upper walkway and fiddle with the control box to open the door ahead to the waterfront. Be wary of mines here as you follow the path ahead, and break through the crates and drop down at the end to finish this level.

Conversion

Head into the doorway and stay there are you kill the Hybrids to your left, under the crane. Move ahead, shooting whatever moves, until a cut scene plays; watch it and then move on. Shoot the Leapers on the path ahead and keep going until you reach a room filled with cocoons hanging from the ceiling. Go around the corner and take out all of the Hybrids here. When they're all dead, make your way to the switch and use it to continue forward, then keep killing the Hybrids and Menials as you plow your way to the elevator, making sure not to fall over the edge. Get aboard the lift and take it up.

Hunted Down

Head along the path until you reach an elevator, then follow the street to the bar. Destroy the mines, find some ammunition for your shotgun, and head forward, where some Hybrids will attack. Grab the Grimsby: Captured Intel on the counter in a small room by the docks, then keep moving along the water until you're ambushed by Hybrids in an empty area. Go around the corner and head up the stairs to find the Grimsby: York Set Up Intel, then go outside and take out the Leapers. Parker will radio you when you reach the next elevator and let you know that Hybrids have blocked the way out with sentry guns. Head to the doorway and start sniping the Hybrids, and use your grenades whenever you find them in packs. Stay on the right edge of this area to avoid the sentry guns' fire, then toss some grenades on the Hybrids manning the guns to clear them. Now head along the exit path, drop down to the street, and run to the end of the level.

Manchester

Path of Least Resistance

This level starts with gunfire blazing all around you as the American Forces team up with the British. You'll have an infinite number of backup soldiers here, so be sure to let them do some of the dirty work and keep yourself from getting killed. Go left from the beginning of the level and head down the street to flank the Chimera and decimate their numbers. Now continue forward down the fairly linear path until you reach the bridge spanning the river. Go left before you cross it and descend the steps beneath the bridge to find the Manchester: Of Howlers Intel. Now head back up and sprint across the bridge to the sentry gun on the opposite side before the Hybrids reach it and take them out with extreme prejudice. Make for the cathedral next, and switch to your Rossmore when the Howler appears to blow it away. Enter the cathedral.

The Cathedral

Leapers will converge upon you as you step inside, so quickly race off to one side and lead them around the room, turning back to fire at them every now and toss the occasional grenade. When you've cleared the room, two armored Hybrids known as Steelheads will burst in and start firing their Augers, which can pierce anything you'd want to use for cover. Chuck a grenade at them as soon as they enter, then toss another to finish the job, and break out the Rossmore to take out the Howler that comes in after them. When everything evil is toes-up, take one of the Steelheads' Augers, then head into the corridor and grab the Manchester: Crawlers Intel off the shelf. Keep moving until you reach the street, and head to the courtyard area containing two Howlers. Blow their brains out with the Rossmore, then get ready to use the Auger's Force Shields to protect you from the myriad mines placed in your way ahead. Grab the Manchester: Stalker Hunt Intel from the bottom of the wooden creek bed, then head up the hill to the playground. Fight off the Hybrids here and run back to the streets until you see a sentry gun in the distance. Shoot the explosives next to it to take it out, then head up the steps.

Outgunned

Find cover immediately at this level's start and target your assault on the Chimera around the fountain, tossing a few grenades into the larger clusters of baddies. When everything's dead, the Stalker will appear, ready for battle. Take cover at once, then hide behind the convoy truck in the corner and open fire on the glowing power orb on its backside until the Stalker is scrap metal.

Nottingham

Into the Fire

Ignore the madness ensuing around you and head up the right side of the area to reach an enemy bunker. Clear it out, then make your way through the bunkers to the trenches. When you see the sentry gun ahead, head through the nearby doorway to come up behind it and take it out. Head into the next trench, take out the gun there, and sweep the room for a Nottingham: Harbinger Intel on a table. You'll soon reach a house sitting on the top of a hill; greet its occupants by lobbing a grenade through the front door to set off the explosives within. Head in and finish off whatever's still alive, then grab the Nottingham: Tunnels Intel off the table, and finally head up to the top floor of the house, killing everything there to end the level.

Conduits

Move down the corridor here to come face-to-face with the impressively large Titan. Throw a grenade at the Titan to stun it a moment, then tag its head with the Bullseye and empty your clips into it until it's dead, strafing all the while to avoid its return fire. Continue on after you take the Titan down, meet up with the British soldier, and soon you'll come across the L23 Fareye sniper rifle, which slows time as you fire it and makes getting headshots a breeze. Move on, then drop to the floor below and lay waste to the Hybrids in the nearby trench. Grab the ammo in this area, then run up the ramp to find a horde of Hybrids waiting to blow your head off. Backpedal down the ramp and hurl grenades into the mob to clear them out, then head forward down the street and into the building. Grab the Nottingham: Regarding Cloven Intel off the shelf here, then run up the next ramp to end this level.

Viper's Nest

You'll begin on a dirt ramp overlooking a Titan below as it annihilates a group of unfortunate squad of British soldiers. Take cover on the ramp and tag the Titan's head, then fire away with the Bullseye as the Hybrids start to pour into the area. Finish the Titan off, then get in the elevator and take it to the top. Collect the ammo here, then use the sniper rifle to blow away the sentry gunners on the second platform. Keep moving until you run into a Steelhand, and blast him to bits with your grenades. Move over the walkway, then hit the switch behind the Menials to rotate the walkway to the third platform. Head there, then take the elevator down to face another Titan. Joy! Keep the elevator between you and the Titan at all times and take the Titan down as you did before.

Cheshire

No Way Out

You'll be ambushed by a group of Hybrids right when this mission starts, so duck into one of the nearby halls for cover and shoot them all down (or just blast them to smithereens with grenades). Head through the mess hall into the tunnels, then into a large corridor heading right. Keep moving, then ascend the stairs in the hall to grab the Cheshire: Invasion Intel next to a corpse in the generator room. When you reach the shower room, head through the hole to more tunnels, and keep going until you run into a new enemy, the Slipskulls. Keep moving to avoid their fire, and stay back, tagging them individually and taking them out one by one until they're all dead. Continue to the officer's quarters, then go through the doors on the right side of the corridor and take this tunnel to the end to find a desk containing some grenades and the Cheshire: Specimen Tank Intel.

Make for the end of the corridor now and an enormous worm will coming burrowing through, leaving a large tunnel in its wake. Head into this tunnel and take it to a room, then ascend the walkways to a switch at the top of the room. Hit it, then run through the opened door to reach a large generator room. Drop down with the Rossmore ready and blow away the two Howlers there, then continue through the corridors until you reach the generator switches. Thus ends this level.

Secrets

With the power back on, return to the generator room and head up the stairs to find a new way open for you. You'll soon be ambushed by Hybrids in the long corridor, so snipe as many as you can before they're too close for that weapon, then kill the rest with your weapon of choice. Make your way now to the open room, then head through the vents to reach another generator room. Flip the switch out in the hall to open the way, then head into the tunnel, where some Steelheads will attack you. Toss some grenades to take care of them post haste, then enter the next door to find another worm-tunnel. Walk past the pods to trigger the birth of several Leapers, then blast them away with the Rossmore. Take the health near the end here, then proceed to the Map Room to bring this level to a close.

Angel

Exit the Map Room and head into the Autopsy Room, killing the Menials within and claiming the Cheshire: Post Mortem Intel from a desk in the middle of the room. Break the glass in this room and head through, then climb the stairs to a room packed with Hybrids. Clear them all out, then keep heading through the autopsy rooms, stopping to grab the Cheshire: Autopsy Intel from the first autopsy room on the right. Soon you'll encounter your first Grey Jacks, which try to split you open with their claws. Blast away at them with the shotgun, then head up the stairs to find some soldiers and Hybrids in the middle of a battle outside the Angel's cell. Help them kill off the Hybrids, then get ready to face that giant worm that's been leaving tunnels everywhere. Steelheads and Hybrids will accompany this fight, but you can make it considerably easier on yourself by grabbing some air-fuel grenades from one of the nearby train cars and laying a few down outside the wall where the worm pops out. Time it so that when the grenades go off, everything burns to a nice crisp.

Somerset

Search and Rescue

Your next mission: locate Cartwright, wherever he is. Head forward and pick up a new weapon, the Hailstorm, then get to the street and chase after the Chimera, opening fire on them to get their attention. Kill them all, then go left of where you found the Hailstorm to reach a four-way intersection; go left first to grab the Somerset: Field Guide 1 Intel, then go back and take the right path. Head towards the gunfire in the distance, going up the stairs to gain prime position for wiping out everything that isn't human. Use the Hailstorm alternative fire to let it auto-fire upon the Chimera, then swoop in to shoot the remaining Hybrids and Slipskulls and end the level.

Common Ground

You'll be driving a Jeep in this level while Cartwright mans the gun turret, but don't worry about protecting him, as he can't die, so just focus on keeping yourself alive. In order to open the gates that block the way ahead you'll have to park outside the bunkers next to the gates, fight your way inside, then flip the gate switches. Let Cartwright take out as many of the Hybrids as he can before you jump in to mop up the rest, and head through the first gate. Go right from here to find a shack containing the Somerset: Spires Intel, then keep moving to the next set of bunkers. Lure the Chimera out as best you can, then hit the switches in the bunkers to move ahead to the last bunkers on the hill. Clear them out, hit the switches, and head through, driving through the fence on your way down the hill.

A Disturbing Discovery

You and Cartwright must temporarily part ways for now, so buck up and proceed into the factory ahead. Lay waste to the beasties inside, then grab the XR-003 Sapper between the two exits to the left and right. Now go through the left exit first to grab the Somerset: Field Guide 2 Intel, then go back and take the right exit. Destroy the mines and Menials in the next area, and the Grey Jacks beyond them. When you reach the bridge and cross it, you'll be reunited with the immortal Cartwright and his trusty sniper rifle. Head up the hill, then make your way through the factories, letting Cartwright kill as many of the enemies as you can before they get too close. Be careful when you open the large door, as you'll be ambushed shortly thereafter. Head left to find the Somerset: Tower Notes behind a tank, then run up the ramp to find the Jeep. This completes the level.

Bristol

Devil at the Door

You've still got Cartwright by your side, thank goodness, and you'll need him, as this level is packed with all sorts of enemies, requiring you to change strategies depending on the situation. Start blasting away once Cartwright lures the Stalkers away from the building, taking out the Hybrids and Howlers. Shoot the Hybrids attacking the bunker of soldiers nearby, then head inside to find some ammunition. Finally, a Titan awaits is execution, so bring it to its knees as you have every other Titan in the game: tag the monster's head, strafe around its return fire, and unload your Bullseye into it until it's dead. Now head through the gate and go left to find some health and ammo (and several mines), then right to move on. Destroy the mortars here, finish off the Hybrids, then head up the road to Cartwright.

Evacuation

Pick up the ammo in front of you here, then head into the next room and take out the Slipskulls. Descend the stairs, then go right and blast away the Leapers to reach the Bristol: Crates Intel. Now make for the cafeteria to meet a new enemy: the Hardfang. They use the Arc Charger as their primary weapon when they get close to you, but they can be taken down pretty easily with a few powerful shots to the chest. Hit the switch in the next room to open up the elevator, which you should take down to the hangar. Take the air-fuel grenades in the box next to a pool table, and use them on the Titan lumbering about down here. Look in the bottom of the first circular shaft here to find the Bristol: Preparations Intel, then head for the far end of the hangar. When you destroy the three sentry guns, the transport will be able to take off, and a platform will lower in the corner of the room. Ride it up to the next corridor, killing the Hybrids and Steelhead whenever you see them. At the next elevator, take it up, then look in the red-light room for the Bristol: Broadcast Guide Intel. Enter the nearby map room, kill the Steelheads and Slipskulls within, and take the ammunition from the upper corner. Now head on to the end of this level.

Parting Ways

You only need to kill a few enemies here to pass the level, but doing so can be quite the challenge. Stay behind either of the two walls and fire your alt-fire missiles at the Titans and mortars. Kill three of each and you will have beat the level.

Bracknell

Into the Depths

Shoot the Menials in this room, then head forward to a room filled with Leaper Pods. Grab the Bracknell: Conduits Intel from a hole in the floor on one side, then proceed to the next room, where some Grey Jacks will attack. Blast them away with the Rossmore, then take out the Steelhead and Hybrids that appear next with a well-placed air-fuel grenade. Continue through the tunnels until you reach a large circular platform, and steel yourself for a fierce battle. Platforms will periodically rise all around this platform's edges, bringing with them all sorts of enemies that require different strategies (and weapons) to defeat. Kill whatever comes up as quickly as you can until all the platforms have risen, then take the Bracknell: Surrounded Intel from the edge of the arena.

Now move on down the slope and you'll soon be accosted by Rollers, which are essentially just more powerful Leapers, and can be killed just as you would a regular one. Keep running all the way to the tubes. Head up the tubes, fighting the Slipskulls along the way, until you've put them behind you. You'll have to kill some Steelheads and many, many Menials up here, so toss an air-fuel grenade their way before finishing off whatever's still moving. Continue on to the elevator.

In a Darker Place

Another level beginning with a horde of Menials you must slaughter. Thankfully there are several grenades for you to pick up here, so chuck those at your foes to make quick work of them. Hybrids will rush in afterwards. Kill them all, then take the LAARK rocket launcher off the floor, as well as all the ammo you can carry. Now head to the top of the lift and launch those rockets into the three groups of Steelheads there. Head into the tunnel going up, then drop down into the circular area. Kill everything down here, collect all the ammunition, then hit the two switches on the wall to open a door and let a Stalker in! Fire your rockets at its head--five ought to do it--but if you're short on those, toss some grenades at it or try to get behind it and fire at its glowing power orb.

Outskirts of London

A Desperate Gamble

You're in a train station, packed with Chimera, naturally. Check out the surrounding rooms for supplies, then head into the tunnel to face some Rollers, followed by a Steelhand, and later on some Hybrids. Ascend the stairs, and keep moving through the rooms, avoiding the windows as much as you can and certainly not stopping in front of them. Head down the next set of stairs to find a downed chopper along with some Hybrids and a Steelhand, then enter the dilapidated hotel. Go left into the junk-stacked room, then find the London: Drowned Intel on the bed behind it. Blast away all the enemies around the central staircase, then head up to end the level.

Ice and Iron

Before you can receive the tank so graciously being delivered to you, you'll have to clear out this section of enemies first, and it won't be easy. Head down the snow-covered rubble-strewn streets and lure the Stalker toward you into the protected corner, then wait for it to turn around so you can blast it in the caboose. As for the Titan, tag it with some air-fuel grenades, or blast it with the rocket launcher if you're fortunate and economic enough to have any rounds for it left. Once the Titan is down you'll receive your tank, so strap in and get moving. Fire a few shells into the Widowmaker to destroy it, then slowly advance to the next section, where you'll have to face off against more Stalkers. Fire at them from a distance to avoid their attacks, then head through the newly-opened gate when you've slain them all. You'll face more Stalkers and Widowmakers beyond it, as well as Chimera positioned in the buildings around you, and another Titan. Drive over to the bridge now and Hale will get back on foot. Check out the first floor of the nearby hotel for the London: Goliath Intel, then head up to the second floor to end the level.

London: River Thames

Burning Bridges

From the start of the level, run left to grab the LAARK ammo by the shrub, then run right into the building and head for the upper level. Grab the LAARK ammo there, then run back down find some more ammo on the upper level of the second building here. Now take care of the Stalkers that show up ready for a brawl. You'll have to face a Widowmaker next, so fire some rockets into it, then finish it off with the Auger if need be. Now head into the alley, and take the path going left over the garden to another street. Look around the right side of the street for some M5A2 ammo, and you'll find the Thames: Construction Intel near it. Now run back to the garden area and enter the crumbling building. Leap over the rooftops until you reach the alley containing a few Steelhands below. Nail them with grenades and drop down, then head around to the back of the building to find the Thames: Demolitions Intel. Go up the stairs now to the roof, then head over to the next building and drop down to the subway. Head inside.

On the Ice

Snipe the Hybrids here with the Fareye, then pick up all the ammo here to restock your considerable firepower. Head down the stairs to the right, take out the Hybrids and Steelhands, and collect all the ammo from the boxes. Take the next staircase, then blast the enemies that appear behind the railcar below (or just mine the area and let them kill themselves). Grab the LAARK ammo from the hanging subway car, then head to the end of the tunnel and out to the river. Run down the path, and be prepared for several ambushes. Continue down the path, taking out the Steelhands and Menials, then cross the ice to the tunnel to reach the end of this level.

Giant Slayer

You're back in the Jeep again, with Cartwright manning the turret once more. Take out the Stalker here by driving circles around it, then blast away the Hybrids next to the gate leading ahead. When they're all dead, hope out and head inside the base. Hybrids and Steelheads infest the area, so take them all out with caution. Now snatch up all the ammo and get inside the empty Stalker. Now for a taste of your own medicine, Chimera! You'll have to fight a gigantic Goliath next, but if you keep moving and strafing you should sustain little to no damage from it. Once you kill it, you'll have to destroy more Stalkers and Hybrids before you can head exit your Stalker and enter the base. Get your rocket launcher ready, as a fight against a Widowmaker lies just ahead. Kill it to end the level.

London: Chimera Tower

Angel's Lair

When the elevator stops, head forward to grab the Bullseye Mark II, the weapon of choice for the areas ahead (especially considering the enemy will be packing the same weapon!). Drop out of the exit tube and head up the slope to face a slew of advanced Hybrids, all brandishing their shiny Bullseye Mark II's. Kill them all, then flip the switch to open the way ahead. You'll have to face an Angel next, so tag it with the new Bullseye and blast it while maneuvering around its attacks. Pick up the ammo here, then head forward to the next bridge. Grenade or snipe the Steelheads, then look beneath the bridge for the Tower: Power Source Intel. Proceed to the elevator and take it up, then enter the tube. Run through it, blasting the Hybrid along the way, and head out to the large room with the Slipskulls awaiting their imminent demise (at your hands). Take the next elevator up to an area stuffed with cocoons, which incidentally are invincible and should be ignored. Blast your way through the next few waves of enemies, then take the elevator to the last level of the game.

Last Hope

Get ready for a constant battle to the end of the level. Destroy the Rollers with your Sapper, and when you see the Widowmaker chasing the British soldier, blast it with your rocket launcher before it can turn on you. Snipe the Hybrids next, gather up the ammo, then move up the ramp through the tunnel. Take out the Steelheads here, then carefully head up the tubes to the next area to witness a chopper going down. You'll have to face two Angels here, as well as several incredibly annoying Hybrids blasting at you from above. The key is to stay mobile. Grab the LAARK ammo here, then rocket launch the Angels to death. This cues the arrival of some soldiers who will come in for support, so take out the Hybrids with their help. Now head down the corridor out of there, stopping to grab the Tower: Angels Intel on the way to the elevator at the end. When your little brigade is safely aboard the lift, hit the switch to be taken to the game's final area, the Core.

You'll face a Titan right off the bat, so hit it with an air-fuel grenade and kill it quickly. You'll have several troops supporting you here, but you'll still need to take out the majority of the Chimera. Use the Fareye for headshots on the Hybrids and Steelheads, then take down the next Titan as you head up the ramp to the control room. Kill the Hybrids here, then hit the switch in the middle of the room to lower the main reactor's shields, leaving the reactor's four quadrants vulnerable to attack. After the first shield lowers, blast the reactor with the rocket launcher, then steel yourself for the angry Hybrids that pour in afterwards. Kill them all with grenades and headshots, then head to the second quadrant to the left. Deal with the progressively stronger quadrants with rockets and more rockets. If you run out of rockets, though, switch to your next-strongest firepower and use that. Whatever you have at your disposal, use to destroy the remaining quadrants and the enemies that show up in between. Hybrids and Angels will join the fray after each quadrant is destroyed, but learn where the enemies appear to get the drop on them.

When all four quadrants are destroyed, you have beat the game. Sit back and watch the game's closing cut scenes and credits.
