The most important thing you can do to help yourself in Saint's Row is find a Titan(armored car), and saving it in your garage. When it explodes it'll drop $3-5K and take only 2-3 hand grenades to blow. After, just return to your garage to pay the $500 to repair the Titan and do it over and over again. Money will never be a problem again.
