Hidden Stars
Yoshi's Unexpected Appearance
From the Fountain Observatory, select the "Tarantox's Tangled Web" level on the Space Junk Galaxy, then use the pull stars to reach the large planet. Instead of continuing on the main path here, feed the Hungry Luma 50 Star Bits to create a new, Yoshi-shaped planet. Blast to it and you'll discover that it's utterly infested with Goombas; kill them all to gain this, the first Hidden Star in the game.
Battlerock's Garbage Dump
From the Fountain Observatory, select the "Breaking into Battlerock" level of the Battlerock Galaxy, then use the bombs to reach the launch star. Blast off to the next section of the level and feed the Hungry Luma there 30 Star Bits. A new planet will be revealed, so blast to it for a little game of blow-up-the-space-trash. You have 30 seconds to clear the platform of trash, so aim at the bright spots on the ground to destroy as many of the surrounding pieces of trash as you can with a single bomb.
Wall Jumping Up Waterfalls
From the Kitchen Observatory, select the "Passing the Swim Test" level of the Beach Bowl Galaxy, then dive into the water and retrieve the Golden Shell from the penguin below. But instead of returning it to the coach, run it over to the nearby locked treasure chest and use the shell to break it open. Use the launch star you free to blast off to a different area, one with two tall waterfalls. Lure the Cataquack beneath the ? Coin in the air and let it fling up to it to unlock the Ice Mario Suit. Quickly wall jump between the two waterfalls, then perform a spin jump at the top to reach the launch star. Blast over to the final area, where you can see the Power Star in the air, across some water. Become Ice Mario with the Ice Flower again and walk across the water, luring the Cataquack here across the platforms your frozen shoes are making. Finally, let the beast fling you up to the star.
Matter Splatter Mansion
From the Kitchen Observatory, select the "A Very Spooky Sprint" level of the Ghostly Galaxy, then launch from Toad's spaceship to the planet with the rocks. Spin all the rocks on the spike of land with the spiders and bats on it to find a launch star, then take that instead of the normal path through the level. You'll then have to jump over a series of platforms that disappear and reappear depending on where the dark matter moves; just watch it to get a feel for its path. Eventually you'll find some locked doors and a key for each set, so keep moving up to avoid getting killed by the dark matter and grab the star at the top.
The Golden Chomp
From the Bedroom Observatory, select the "Gusty Garden Gravity Scramble" level of the Gusty Garden Galaxy and float across the gap with the Fluff, making sure you touch all the ? Coins along the way. When you reach land, kill the Piranha Plant at the end, then ride the vine that forms to the next planet, grabbing the next ? Coin in the process. Grab the last ? Coin, then kill the Piranha Plant to make another vine appear. Grab the Rainbow Star on the way to become invincible and blast off to the next planet, then quickly run to the other end and kill the Golden Chomp there while you're still invincible. This will win you another hidden star.
Conquering the Summit
From the Bedroom Observatory, select the "The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr" level of the Freezeflame Galaxy. Become Ice Mario to get past the first set of fountains, and when you reach the second set (the one with the 1-Up Mushroom on it), perform a Triple Jump from the 1-Up and spin to reach a launch star. You'll be blasted to an area where you'll become Fire Mario in order to melt snowmen in your path. Keep heading up the mountain, melting snowmen until you reach the star at the top.
Bullet Bill on Your Back
From the Bedroom Observatory, select the "Sunbaked Sand Castle" level of the Dusty Dune Galaxy and quickly proceed through the level until you reach the planet with the spiny plant on it. Pound the stump there and grab all 15 notes that appear to make a launch star appear. Blast off to the new planet which has a Bullet Bill cannon and a blue switch which lowers the platform. You need to lure a Bullet Bill down as the ground sinks in order to break open the glass cages; the Hidden Star is in one of them.
The Bell on the Big Tree
From the Engine Room Observatory, select the "Cataquack to the Skies" level of the Gold Leaf Galaxy and use the first Cataquack to launch up to the next part of the level. There, locate the large tree and head around to the back of it. Get in one of the bubbles that floats up and rise to the bell above, hitting it to make some notes appear around the trunk. Float around, grabbing all of them for a Hidden Star.
Hurry, He's Hungry
From the Engine Room Observatory, select the "Silver Stars of Sea Slide" level of the Sea Slide Galaxy and become Bee Mario. Fly around the level to platform with the Hungry Luma on it and feed it 40 Star Bits. Launch to the new planet and collect all the notes on the disappearing platforms to make the nearby black hole become a Hidden Star. You don't need to launch here as Bee Mario, but it will come in handy if you work yourself into a corner.
The Flipswitch Chain
From the Engine Room Observatory, select the "Mario Meets Mario" level of the Toy Time Galaxy and proceed through the level, gathering as many Star Bits as you can (you'll need 50 in total). When you reach the planet with the large screw through it, feed the Hungry Luma there your Star Bits and blast to the new planet. Turn all the floor switches yellow to claim your Hidden Star.
Boo in a Box
From the Garden Observatory, select any of the three main levels of the Deep Dark Galaxy ("The Underground Ghost Ship" will do) and proceed to the level to an arrow made of Star Bits. Don't follow the arrow; instead, go down to find a green shell. Use the shell to take out one of the mines around the ship, then use the launch star that appears to fly to a new planet with a Boo inside. Jump from the poles to the switch, then use the trampoline to reach the arrow and the bubble shooter to reach the crystal. Spin it to let in the light, then go back to the ground level and lure the Boo into the light to get the Hidden Star.
Dreadnought's Garbage Dump
From the Garden Observatory, select the "Revenge of the Topman Tribe" level of the Dreadnought Galaxy and check the underside of the platform you start on to find a pipe. Take that to another junkyard where you must throw bombs to take out the debris. You'll have very little time to accomplish this, though, so you must be very expedient about it. Throw two bombs to take out the piles of garbage on the middle first, then two bombs to take out the piles on the right, and finally two bombs to take out the piles on the left. Be sure to make your bombs land on (or very near) the yellow circles for maximum impact.
Burning Tide
From the Garden Observatory, select the "The Sinking Lava Spire" level of the Melty Molten Galaxy and head through the level, collecting all the Star Bits you can get your little white-gloved hands on. Be sure to let yourself fall into the volcano when you launch to it to get more Star Bits. When you launch away from the volcano you'll see a Hungry Luma, so feed it 80 Star Bits to launch to a new area where the lava continually rises and falls. Collect the five silver stars here to make a Hidden Star appear.
Hidden Green Stars
Luigi Under the Saucer
Note that you can only obtain this star after Luigi has sent you a letter with a picture of himself stuck in Battlerock Galaxy. From the Fountain Observatory, select the "Battlerock Barrage" level of the Battlerock Galaxy and proceed all the way to the end of the level. There, instead of freeing the Star, go to the underside of the disc to find Luigi trapped there. Go get a Bullet Bill to follow you and destroy Luigi's cage, netting you a Green Star.
The Secret of Buoy Base
From the Kitchen Observatory, select the "The Floating Fortress" level of the Buoy Base Galaxy and proceed through the water to the ground. Use the Bullet Bills to destroy the cage around the pipe, then go through that to the bottom of this planet, which is crawling with more Bullet Bills. Dodge them all and lure one through the minefield to the cage holding the hidden Green Star, then claim it!
Treasure of the Pyramid
From the Bedroom Observatory, select the "Blasting Through the Sand" level of the Dusty Dune Galaxy and proceed to the first launch star. Blast to the next planet and head to the underside to find a Hungry Luma. Feed it 20 Star Bits and blast to the new planet that forms. Inside, you must locate five silver stars, so touch the green line on the wall to get the sand levels to rise and fall toward the ceiling and floor, respectively. There will be different paths between floor and ceiling and the five stars are scattered throughout these paths. Locate all five for a hidden Green Star.
Luigi Missions
The three Luigi Missions become available after you rescue your green-clad brother in the "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion" mission of the Ghostly Galaxy.
Luigi on the Roof
When you receive a letter from Luigi showing him trapped on top of house, head to the "Dino Piranha" level of the Good Egg Galaxy from the Terrace Observatory and head to the underside of the planet you start the level on. Locate the red pipe between the two trees and go down. Take the next red pipe to the house in question and retrieve your star from Luigi.
Luigi in the Honeyhive Kingdom
When Luigi sends you a letter saying that he's lost along with a picture of the Honeyhive Galaxy, head there via the Terrace Observatory and select the "Bee Mario Takes Flight" level. Head through the level on the main path until it branches, then go right. Drop to the lower ledge to get the Bee Mushroom, then fly up to the ledge with the waterfall on it. Fly up to the next ledge on the left (use the tunnel as a stop-and-rest point), which is also home to the tree in which Luigi is stuck. Spin him or hit him with a Star Bit to free him and gain the Star he found.

Comet Missions
At various points throughout the game, comets will enter the atmosphere of a given galaxy, adding an extra, more challenging mission to that level and giving you a chance to earn another Star. Eventually, a purple Luma will appear next to Rosalina that will change the location of a comet for a mere 20 Star Bits.
There are four types of comets:
- Speedy Comet
- Add a relatively strict timeline to a certain mission, meaning that you must complete it without dawdling or sightseeing.
- Daredevil Comet
- These comets force you to replay a boss fight or other section of a mission with only bar in your health meter.
- Cosmic Comet
- The Cosmic Comic forces you to race through a section of a mission against a bizarre Mario clone. The first to reach the Star at the end wins.
- Fast Foe Comet
- The enemies in a given mission move considerably faster than they did previously, but the rest of the level remains unchanged.
Purple Comet Missions
Once you defeat Bowser and beat the game the first time, a purple comet will begin to show up in random locations in the various galaxies. By selecting the galaxy the comet is currently visiting, you will enter a special Purple Coin mission where you must collect 100 Purple Coins scattered across the level. Though there's no specific order that purple comet follows, it can always be found at one of the following galaxies:
- Good Egg Galaxy
- Honeyhive Galaxy
- Space Junk Galaxy
- Battlerock Galaxy
- Beach Bowl Galaxy
- Ghostly Galaxy
- Gusty Garden Galaxy
- Freezeflame Galaxy
- Dusty Dune Galaxy
- Gold Leaf Galaxy
- Sea Slide Galaxy
- Toy Time Galaxy
- Deep Dark Galaxy
- Dreadnought Galaxy
- Melty Molten Galaxy
