Overview/Strategies

Fox has taken a small hit in speed from his lightning-quick days in Melee (though he's still plenty fast), making his drop time noticably floatier. Like most of the characters returning from Melee, some of Fox's moves have increased in power, while others have become weaker (see the Move List below for more details). Fox is good at both close-range and long-range. In terms of projectile attacks, his Blaster is fast and is good at keeping opponents off their feet, and he can even deal damage (albeit a very small amount) while using his Fox Illusion move, which sends him zipping left or right at light speed. His Up + B recovery move can be directed with the controls stick, and if it's performed off the ground while standing directly next to an opponent, will deal a huge chunk of damage. His Smash Moves, while strong, are pretty short-range though, so keep that in mind. Note that his Reflector remains stationary around Fox and is not an attack like Falco's.

Combos

Here's a combo that leaves your opponent unable to jump back up to the stage after they've started their descent into the abyss:

  1. Find an opponent near an edge and knock them off it with a quick Down Smash
  2. As your opponent starts to jump back toward the platform, jump toward them and use your Forward Aerial A Attack to knock them back again
  3. Immediately drop down and hang from the ledge
  4. As your opponent uses their recovery move to reach the ledge you're hanging from, use your Reflector (Down + B) just as they're about to touch you to knock them back down
  5. Quickly jump back to the ledge and watch as your opponent falls to their doom

There are many variations of this combo, but pulling out that Reflector after hanging from the ledge is key to catching your opponent completely off their guard.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Fast attacks
  • Very quick movements, third fastest runner (behind Sonic and Captain Falcon)
  • Ability to reflect projectiles with Reflector
  • Reflector also good and spiking opponents
  • Excellent, powerful Up Smash

Cons

  • Most attacks are short-range
  • Recovery is easily edge guarded
  • Light-weight, so attacks knock him back farther

Special Notes

  • Fox is available from the start of the game.
  • Fox has the ability to Wall Jump (see General Strategies for more information).
  • Fox can talk to other Starfox characters when on a stage from his games and if one other Starfox character is present by quickly pressing down taunt a few times.
