Items
Assist Trophy
Like Poké Balls, Assist Trophies send out various characters to attack opponents or affect the brawl in some way. Simply picking it up by attacking and then standing still for a split second will summon it. A complete list of the Assist Trophies can be found below.
Banana Peel
Banana peels can be placed on the ground, causing characters to slip and fall when they run over them. Peels can also be tossed directly at an opponent, but they cause no damage.
Beam Sword
When carrying this weapon, attack for medium damage and a wide hit box, or Smash Attack to extend its range and damage. Great for edge guarding. Each character has a unique animation for using this Beam Sword.
Blast Box
Hit the Blast Box with strong attacks or fire-based attacks to make them explode, sending anyone near it soaring into the air.
Bob-omb
The bob-omb can be picked up a thrown for usually fatal damage. After 10 seconds, the bomb will start walking around, and cannot be picked up (it will explode). Do not hold the bomb too long, or it will go off. Also make sure you don't throw it at someone right next to you.
Bunny Hood
The Bunny Hood will make your character travel and attack at 2x speed for 30 seconds. While not as big a deal in Brawl with the floaty characters, you also fall twice as fast, and was a common source of accidental suicide in Melee.
Bumper
The bumper, once placed, bounces player very far away, in the opposite direction that they touched it. If you initially pick up the bumper and throw it at someone, the added knock back can easily kill them. It cannot be re-picked up. Useful for edge guarding and directed throws.
Capsule
Break or throw the Capsule at someone to open it and release an item. There is a one in eight chance that it will explode instead of spawning an item.
CD
CDs add a new music track to the Music Selection screen.
Coins and Bills
Coins and Bills give you points depending on which you pick up. Bronze coins are worth one point, silver are worth three, gold are worth six, and the bills are worth 10. These are different than the coins you use in the Coin Launcher and Spectator modes.
Cracker Launcher
The cracker launcher looks like a bazooka, and when you pick it up, your character holds it at a 45 degree angle. It will shoot small explosive crackers whenever you press the attack button, and you can change the angle by moving the control stick up and down. It is very difficult to turn around with the cracker launcher, so make sure you're facing the right way when you pick it up.
Crates and Barrels
Crates and Barrels hold items inside them and can be broken open by tossing them at an opponent or the ground, dropping it off a high ledge, or just attacking it until you've smashed it to pieces. They'll take on the characteristics of the stage they're currently present in, i.e. in a futuristic stage, they'll look metallic. Note that crates and barrels can also slide downhill now, a feature not present in Melee.
Deku Nut
Chuck this nut from the Legend of Zelda series at an opponent to stun them.
Dragoon Parts
Collect the three pieces of the Dragoon to make an aiming reticle appear onscreen, set an opponent in your sights, then fire to cause a one-hit KO. The pieces that have been collected are displayed in the upper-left corner of the characters' pictures, so attack other players to obtain their Dragoon pieces!
Fan
Press the attack button repeatedly to do rapid damage to players. Players caught in a fan attack can have a really hard time escaping. The thrown fan will also go through many reflectors (Fox, Falco, etc.), and launches players straight up.
Fire Flower
Press the attack button after picking up the fire flower to spray a constant stream of flame (much like Bowser's special). Great for edge guarding.
Food
Food can be picked up to recover small percentages (1-3%) of your health. It usually falls in groups, so pressing the attack button repeatedly in such a group will help you pick it all up. Players "eating food" are quite vulnerable, and this is a great time to attack them. The 20% or so they'll recover can easily be knocked back off with a well placed strike.
Franklin Badge
The Franklin Badge, when picked up, is worn on the character and automatically reflects any projectiles for a limited amount of time.
Freezie
Throw freezie at opponents to encase them in a block of ice for ~10 seconds (depends on player damage). You may still do damage to them during this time, but if you hit them with a fire attack of any kind (fire flower, Mario's fireball, Bowser's breath, Pokemon Trainer's Charizard's Flamethrower), then they will be freed. Since the frozen player cannot move, hitting an opponent with freezie over a pit will usually result in death.
Golden Hammer
The Golden Hammer is a more powerful version of the Hammer, causing great damage to anyone it smashes down on. Occasionally you'll pick up a Golden Hammer, only to find out it's a useless squeaky toy.
Gooey Bomb
The gooey bomb can be picked up and thrown like other items, but if it hits a player, it will stay attached to them until it explodes, or they rub it off onto another player. If it's show or something explodes near it before its picked up, it will explode.
Green Shell
Grab the Green Shell and let it go or jump on it to send it racing across the ground, damaging anyone it runs into.
Hammer
A black hammer that, when picked up, allows the player to inflict massive damage on anyone it hits. Sometimes the head will fall off, leaving you swinging away with a worthless handle!
Heart Container
Pick this up to reduce 100% damage. Note that 100% does not mean all of it. If you are at 124%, it will reduce to 24%.
Home-Run Bat
Either press the attack button regularly to do medium damage, or perform a side Smash Attack for a huge windup and an instant KO. The windup takes approximately one second, but is great to time with side recovering opponents or people returning from the air. This weapon has been deemed the deadliest throughout the Smash Bros. franchise.
Hothead
Throw a Hothead to make it continually circle a platform, damaging any opponent it touches. If hit by lightning- or fire-based attacks they increase in size.
Key
Keys unlock doors in the Subspace Emissary.
Lightning
This will shrink all other players as if they had eaten a poison mushroom for 30 seconds. Shrunken players do not take more damage than normal, but they can be knocked off the screen more easily. This item is from Mario Kart.
Lip's Stick
Swing this flower at your opponents to place smaller flowers on top of their heads; these slowly add damage to their health percentage. Continue to attack an opponent with the Lip's Stick to make the flower bigger.
Maxim Tomato
Press A to eat this and recover 50%.
Metal Box
Grab this box from Super Mario 64 to become a heavier, metal version of yourself.
Motion-Sensor Bomb
Place the inconspicuous Motion-Sensor Bomb on the floor or a wall and watch it detonate when someone gets near!
Mr. Saturn
Mr. Saturn, from Earthbound, can be thrown for low damage (3-5%), but will do a lot of damage to a shield. If properly used, it can act as a shield breaker on players that have already been blocking.
Party Ball
The Party Ball is large and can be picked up and thrown for medium damage. If thrown, or left alone for 10 seconds, the Party Ball will rise up and open, dropping items below it. These items are random. Sometimes it even drops groups of Bomb-ombs.
Pitfall
The pitfall "ball" will stick players in the ground for about ~10 seconds (depends on damage) when it is thrown at them. These player can still be hit while stuck, and cannot block or move. However, this does not take effect when thrown at a foe in mid-air.
Poison Mushroom
The opposite of a normal Mushroom, the Poison Mushroom shrinks your character down several sizes. It's indistinguishable from a normal Mushroom except for its eyebrows, which give it the impression that it's in a rather sour mood.
Poké Ball
These release a random Pokémon to attack your opponents or affect the battle in some favorable way. Picking it up by pressing attack, and then throwing it onto the ground will summon one. See the complete list of Pokémon in Smash Bros. below. The Poké Ball can also be deadly if thrown at opponents.
Ray Gun
This gun fires a limited amount (16 shots) of green laser beams at your opponents.
Sandbag
Beat up on the Sandbag to make it drop items and food, as well as make it easier to hit farther.
Screw Attack
The Screw Attack item now acts like a badge. When you pick it up, it stays with you, and you will now do damage if you jump into someone (the same move as Samus' Up Special). Unlike in Melee, you cannot throw this after it's picked up, and it will expire after 30 seconds.
Smart Bomb
The Smart Bomb is from the Star Fox series. When thrown, it detonates and fills a large portion of a stage with a fiery explosion. Sometimes, though, it won't go off as expected; when this happens, watch out, because it could go off at any second.
Smash Ball
This is a floating ball with the Smash Bros Brawl logo on it. You can't just pick it up, you have to do damage to it to acquire it. You will give off a slight glow when you pick it up, and you can press the Special Move button (with no direction) to active your Final Smash. See individual character guides for how to use their Final Smashes. If another player has picked up the Smash Ball and not activated it, you may knock it back out of them if you do enough damage.
Smoke Ball
Smoke Balls don't cause any damage when thrown an opponent's way. Instead, they release smoke (obviously), obscuring opponents' (and your own) view, so be careful where you toss one!
Soccer Ball
Attack the Soccer Ball to set it on fire and send it flying at opponents, damaging them in the process.
Spring
Pretty self-explanatory; use it to bounce high into the air, or even chuck it at an opponent.
Star Rod
Use it as a melee weapon and a firearm simultaneously, then throw it at an opponent to send them flying. Perform a side Smash attack to fire a star.
Starman
The Starman, as he did in the Mario Bros. games, will make you invincible (for 10 seconds). You can still self-destruct by falling off the screen.
Sticker
Stickers power up your character in the Subspace Emissary and are collectibles to boot.
Stock Ball
Stock Balls increase the number of lives you have in the Subspace Emissary. Only the first-picked character will use these.
Super Scope
When a player has the Super Scope in his or her possession, they can either hit the regular attack button repeatedly to fire quick, multiple shots, or hold down the button to charge up a powerful shot.
Super Mushroom
The Super Mushroom, when touched, will cause your character to grow exponentially in size, making their attacks nearly impossible to avoid.
Superspicy Curry
The Superspicy Curry acts like the fire flower, but continually outputs fire, and you can still attack and do moves. Your character will dance around in place or run a bit faster after eating it. It's spicy.
Team Healer
The Team Healer is only used in Team Battle mode. If thrown at a teammate during battle, it will recover some of their health, depending on how much damaged they've sustained. The higher your damage meter, the more health you recover. Be careful when throwing it, though, because if you hit an opponent you will recover their health!
Timer
Grabbing this will slow all other player to 25% speed, while you stay full speed, for 30 seconds.
Trophy Base
Trophy Bases appear only in the Subspace Emissary and are used to obtain Trophies from enemies. To use it, attack the enemy until it's weakened, then throw the Trophy Base at it to transform it into a Trophy. This also works on bosses.
Unari
When this item appears, pick it up and throw it at an enemy to make its spikes appear, delivering considerable damage upon impact. It can be attacked to make the spikes retract.
Warp Star
Grab this star and you'll zoom off the screen and coming crashing down back where you landed to do damage. You may direct the star in flight with the control stick. Note that in Brawl, the warp star is a lot slower than it was in Melee, so it's easier to dodge now.
Assist Trophies
Andross
The main villain from Star Fox appears in the background, firing silver polygons at your opponents.
Barbara
The mascot character from Daigasso! Band Brothers (Japan only release). She uses her guitar to unleash sound waves, taking out opponents who get close to her. These sound waves cause multiple hits, so run when you see it coming.
- Unlock Barbara by acquiring 25 hidden songs.
Custom Robo
The Custom Robo assist trophy presents the Ray Mk III from Custom Robo Arena. The Ray Mk III will fly around the stage, firing a shower of bullets from the gun on its left hand, and peppering the stage with bombs from its right.
- Unlock Custom Robo by playing 100 brawls.

Excitebike
From the game Excitebike, little motor bikers will cross the screen ramming enemy characters.

Jeff
From Earthbound, Jeff unleashes a swarm of homing bottle rockets at his foes. He launches four regular bottle rockets, and one mega rocket.
Jill & Drill Dozer
From Drill Dozer. Using her Drill Dozer, Jill will charge forward without hesitation.

From WarioWare. Together, they form a cross-combination slash.
Knuckle Joe
He jumps around and unleashes a flurry of punches, then does an uppercut or haymaker finale.
Lakitu and Spinies
From the classic Super Mario Bros. series, Lakitu flies to near the top of the stage to drop down Spinies and other creatures to the summoner's foes.
Little Mac
Fresh from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!, Little Mac rushes back and forth across a stage once he's released, delivering jabs and uppercuts to opponents.
Lyn
From Fire Emblem for Game Boy Advance. She crouches down and concentrates for a few seconds. By the split second, she zooms right in front of her foes and slashes them.
Metroid
Just like the metroids from the Metroid series, the Metroid will attach itself to an opponents head and suck away a good chunk of their health.
Mr. Resetti
From Animal Crossing, this assist trophy will annoy you with comments.
Nintendogs
Finding this Assist Trophy unleashes an enormous, adorable dog into the stage, blocking the majority of the screen as it tries to escape your television.
Saki Amamiya
From Sin & Punishment. He uses a cannon sword to blast and slash his foes with. He runs and jumps around like a regular Smash Bros. character to fit in.
Samurai Goroh
From F-Zero, he jumps around and rowdily slashes up his opponents.
Shadow the Hedgehog
Using the power of Chaos Control, Shadow slows down time for anyone near him except the summoner. This assist trophy has the same effect as the Timer item, but at a medium radius.
- Unlock Shadow the Hedgehog by unlocking Sonic.

Waluigi

Pokémon
Bellossom
Sleeping Powder: When Bellossom appears, all opposing players that come near Bellossom fall asleep. The more damage the player has, the longer he or she sleeps.

Chikorita

Entei
It launches a pillar of fire that lifts up the opponent.
Gardevoir
Reflect: Gardevoir creates a large field that reflects any projectiles fired within it.
Goldeen
