Anti-Spy Tactics
A single Spy can turn the tide of the game. Once discovered however, they are easy to kill. Here are some good ways to counter Spies.
- Communicate
- Talk to your teammates and alert them of any Spy you see. Be sure to tell them what class the spy is disguised as.
- Look for yourself
- If you see someone with your name on the battlefield, they're a Spy. Alert your teammates.
- Watch for anything out of the ordinary
- A teammate running towards your base, a Sniper in a close area, a Scout moving slowly, or a Medic that isn't healing should all be red flags.
- Watch the weapons
- Spies appear carrying a class's primary weapon. An Engineer carrying a shotgun rather than a wrench should be a give away. Same with a Medic who's carrying a needle gun.
- Shoot your teammates
- Shooting teammates doesn't hurt them. Shoot anyone who looks suspicious, if they take damage you should kill them. It's common for Engineers to shoot anyone who comes close to their machines.
- Trial by fire
- A Pyro should shoot anyone remotely suspicious. Teammates won't be hurt. Spies will catch fire. If you're a Pyro and you light a teammate on fire, they're a spy. If a Pyro suspects a cloaked Spy they can flame a whole area. Any cloaked Spy will be revealed as moving human-shaped flames.
- Scout speed
- A Scout is obviously the fastest person in the game. Although, when the spy disguises himself as the Scout, the Spy's speed doesn't change.
- Medic's ubercharge
- Look at a friendly medic and see if there's an ubercharge under his/her name. If there's isn't, then he's a spy.
- Touch
- You can walk through your teammates (and their built items), but the enemy cannot. If you managed to pass by your teammate whom you can't go through, he's a disguised spy. Also, watch out if a team mate tries to climb over your allies built objects. And if you managed to touch a cloaked enemy spy, their cloak will flicker for a second.
Anti-Sentry Tactics
A well placed sentry gun can be difficult to destroy, but there are some classes that can take them out.
| Class | Tactic |
|---|---|
| Spies | Walk up, disguised or cloaked, and electro sap them. |
| Demoman | Lob grenades around a corner to destroy them or use stickies while uber'd. |
| Soldier | Pop around a corner, shoot several rockets and take cover again. Sentries can't dodge rockets. |
| Medic | Uber charge another player (like a Soldier or Heavy) and have them destroy it. |
| Pyro | If the Sentry is around a corner (ctf_2fort for example). Turn on the flamethrower around the corner where the sentry is. |
Teleporter Priority
A teleporter can only transport one player, then it has to cool down. There is often a wait to use the teleporter, and an informal priority system is common among on many servers. Many players feel that Heavies, Soldiers, and Medics should get first priority. Heavies and Soldiers are slow and needed at the front lines. Medics, though faster, are needed to support the other two classes.
Two classes that are discouraged from using the teleporter are Scouts and Spies. Scouts move fast enough that they don't need to use it. Spies are impeded by the teleporter; using it gives a red or blue glow to the player that renders disguise useless.
Switch Classes
It's important to have a good mix of classes on your team. Pay attention to what other classes are on your team and switch if there is a class your team is lacking.
You can also switch classes in response to the game's situation. Switch to an offensive class to take a position, then switch to a defensive class to hold it. Be ready to switch to a different class depending on the map or even different parts of the same map.
Class Specific Strategies
Scout
As a scout you are very vulnerable to direct fire, so try to keep moving and use the terrain to your advantage! Use your double-jump to quickly maneuver on taller structures and shell the enemy from above so they have a harder time figuring out where you are. Stay close to your enemy as the aiming sensitivity is much greater as a Scout meaning you can strafe around them whilst your enemy is aiming around looking for you.
Pyro
As a pyro, getting in range can sometimes be tricky. A good strategy is to use corners to your advantage: hide behind a corner, and when you think someone is coming (or has passed you without noticing you) quickly pop out and burn them unexpectedly. If you at some point do get caught in the open, try to either run for a tight spot somewhere, or quickly circle around the enemy if you know your way around a map well.
The pyro's worst enemies are soldiers and demomen, as you never know when a critical rocket or grenade is gonna be fired at you from point-blank range.
Note: Updates on June 19, 2008 to the Pyro Class has only been implemented on PC.
With the update to the Pyro gaining a secondary fire to his flamethrower, he can now shoot a blast of compressed air at enemies. This air blast can push enemies away and redirect incoming projectiles. This can be used to kill a demoman or soldier with their own weapons as well as push a medic away from whoever he is healing or having ubercharged. This can also be used defensively to keep back ubercharged enemies as well as quickly getting away from an enemy after igniting them.
Heavy
A good strategy for the heavy is to wind up while jumping from behind a corner. That way you can gain some valuable seconds, as the enemy may not be expecting you.
Soldier
Use the rocket-jump ability to your advantage! Aim the rocket launcher at your feet and jump at the same time as you fire it. This ability helps you reach higher places than the scout at the expense of health. Good locations for rocket-jumping on to are the battlements on ctf_2fort and the B building on cp_gravelpit.
Spy
Switch up your disguises every now and then! If you always use the same disguise, people will be looking for suspicious people of that class a lot more. Also try to disguise as some class that they have a lot of on their team, that way people can lose track of who is who, and simply let you pass without knowing it.
Medics, scouts and spies are generally bad choices for disguising as, because you don't have certain traits that those classes have, like medics are usually expected to be healing someone, scouts run really fast and spies usually have a mask over their face and don't generally linger around their own base much.
Demoman
Find a corner!!! The sticky bombs is arguably one of the most efficient weapons in the game due to its massive packing power and strategic advantage for sticking on any surface. Corners are a great place to disguise sticky bombs as they are easily spotted and avoided if in the open. In Dustbowl there is a place where the main exit for the blue team is a short narrow tunnel sloped upwards. Right in front of it is a hut. If you fire onto the paneling to the blue teams left side of the tunnel the sticky bombs remain invisible whilst still dealing as much damage. Stand on top of the hut and don't let anyone out.
Sniper
Remember that the sniper's rifle charges up over time to 100%, which means that you don't always have to aim for a head shot to kill another player. Scouts, spies, medics, and other snipers can often be killed this way. Most of the time, even while aiming, its best for a sniper to keep moving. Practice your moving shot, it will make you much harder to hit. This is a must when trying to kill other snipers. Finally, ALWAYS TAKE THE SHOT! You usually have nothing to lose by going for that medic hopping across your path, and its surprising how often it works.
