Event Info
The chess event is possibly the most fun and interesting encounter to be found within WoW. It involves the players taking control of chess pieces and moving them about the board to do battle. The encounter doesn't follow real chess rules other then the goal being to defeat the opposing king. The event is for all intensive purpose unfailable given that even should the players loose, the event can simply be restarted without punishment or retribution for loosing.
Upon winning the event, a dust covered chest will spawn with your rewards.
Strategy
Each player can take control of a chess piece and use it to attack pieces on the other side.
Players take control of a piece by talking to it. They will then gain a pet bar that has a variety of abilities used to move and attack. The player also gains a buff indicating that they are controlling a piece. Should the player's piece die, they gain a debuff that prevents them from choosing a new piece for the duration. A player can abandon their current piece by clicking off the buff.
Each piece has several common abilities on the pet bar. This include move and turn facing. The move ability (4th pet ability) brings up an aoe targeting circle. Place this over the square you wish to move into. Turn facing (5th pet ability) similarly uses an aoe targeting circle to select the direction you want the piece to face. Pieces can only face cardinal directions and can not face diagonals. All pieces will automatically melee the square they are facing.
Pawn
These are the orc grunts and human footmen. The pawns should be controlled first just in order to advance them forward and unblock all the major pieces. Pawns have an instant attack as well as a damage absorbing move. They can move to any single adjacent square.
Knight
These are the horses and wolves on the board. They have a special attack that attacks the target they face for 3000 damage. Like real chess knights, they can move 2 squares forward and one square to the side. However, they can also forgo the one square to the side and move 2 squares in any cardinal direction.
Bishop
The bishops are perhaps two of the most important pieces on the board. They act as the healers in the encounter. They should be controlled and should watch after the king's health. The also have a ranged attack that strike the 3 squares in any direction for 2000. They like many other pieces can only move to one adjacent square.
Rook
These are the demons and water elementals at the 4 corners of the board. They have an aoe that will hit all the squares around it for 3000 damage. They also have a damage reduction ability. Unlike real rooks, they can only move to a single adjacent square.
Queen
These are the orc warlock and the human conjuror. The queen can move up to 3 squares in a straight line or 2 squares on a diagonal. They have 2 very powerful special abilities. The first is a ranged move that strikes a square for 4000. The second strikes a square and every square surrounding it for 6000. Both abilities are ranged and can target up to 4 squares in a line or 3 on the diagonal.
King
The kings are Warchief Blackhand and King Llane. They are the focus of the event. If either one dies, the event ends. The king can strike all 3 squares in front of him for 4000 damage. The king can also buff all adjacent allies for a 50% damage increase.
Loot
This loot is gained from the dust covered chest that spawns upon winning the chess event.
