Talents
Beast Mastery
The beast mastery talent line hosts numerous improvements to the hunter's pet as well as a few that improve the hunter as well. BM is a popular spec for leveling as well as for pve and pvp. A BM build is rather easy to play and is easily augmented by 20 points in marksman.
A typical BM build is 41/20/0.
Marksmanship
Marksmanship focuses on improving a hunter's ranged damage. The focus of this talent line is mainly on ranged attack power.
There are several variations of the marksman build that can be modified to lean more toward pvp or pve.
A 20/41/0 build is a strong option for any purpose.
A heavier marks build with some lean into survival of 7/48/6 or 5/41/15 moves the hunter more toward a pvp oriented build.
Survival
The survival line improves the hunter's efficiency and survivability. The talent line hosts various improvements to a hunter's traps as well. Survival also boosts hunter dps by focusing on chance to critical strike as well as agility.
A typical survival build is 0/20/41.
Strategy
Leveling
The hunter is perhaps the easiest class to level. This is a result of the various ways in which the hunter class minimilizes downtime. The term downtime refers to the usual need to eat/drink/bandage between fights. Since the hunter has a pet, the actual player typically won't take much damage. The pet is there to tank. Thanks to mend pet, a hunter can generally keep their pet healed without having to use bandages. Most mobs can be killed with nothing more then the hunter pet and autoshot. This allows the hunter to use mana mainly for mend pet. The only downtime a hunter usually has is having to return to town to buy more arrows or pet food.
While leveling, the type of pet generally does not matter. Any pet can learn growl which will be the main pet skill used. Bite and claw are common to most pet types. Owls and bats are good options due to their screech ability. This not only reduces enemy attack power, but generates extra threat. This means a lower chance the hunter will pull aggro from their pet.
Unlike warlocks, a hunter's pet does not automatically level up with the hunter. The pet will have an independent xp bar. Pets also have a loyalty level. Keeping the same pet around and well fed will cause loyalty to rise. Higher loyalty results in more training points to use in teaching the pet skills. For leveling, extra armor and extra health are probably the best options in the expenditure of training points.
In general, Beast Mastery is the recommended spec for leveling. It will reduce the damage taken by your pet and also cause the pet to deal more damage and thus keep aggro effectively. The spirit bond talent is particularly effective at helping further reduce downtime as it causes a continuous regeneration of health for both hunter and pet.
PvE
Instances
In 5 man instances, a hunter is most often a dps class. However, a hunter plays an effective secondary role in crowd control (cc). Freezing trap is an extremely effective form of cc that can work against some targets that are immune to polymorph. In many cases, freeze traps are simply a way to cc extremely large pulls. The hunter's pet can in some cases even be used to offtank. In extreme cases, a hunter can even be called upon to kite a target. A skilled hunter can not only provide some of the best damage around, but can provide effective secondary cc.
Effective use of traps and your pet are two signs of a skilled hunter. A hunter's pet can contribute a significant amount of damage to almost any fight. Of course, if the hunter doesn't properly control their pet, it can end up pulling extra targets resulting in party wipes. In general, a pet should be kept on passive to avoid any chance of the pet doing something without the hunters command. The pet should of course not be autocasting growl unless meant to be serving as an OT.
Damage for a hunter is mainly about maintaining an effective and efficient shot rotation. Prior to acquiring steady shot, this generally means using arcane shot. Multishot can be used as well, but care must be taken around cc'ed targets. Hunters are notorious for breaking sheeps and other cc'ed targets with multishot. Learning the size of the multishot arc will help prevent breaking cc. After acquiring steady shot, a basic autoshot/steadyshot rotation is extremely effective and efficient. This is even more true for BM hunters. Survival hunters should be rotating arcane, steady, and multishot as much as possible to maximize their damage.
If the party is moving quickly, it is often better to limit use of special shots and stick to primarily autoshot. This allows the hunter to save mana for when its extremely needed. This is better then holding up the party by having to drink to regain mana.
Perhaps the most important tip for instances is to be mindful of your threat. Hunters are very good at causing high amounts of threat. If your party isn't using a threat meter addon, liberal use of FD is highly advisable. This will clear your threat and prevent you from pulling aggro. If FD is resisted, immediately back off on damage and if needed stop completely. Hunters may wear mail, but they are still rather squishy by comparison to tanks.
Raiding
For raiding, there are basically 3 roles: tanking, healing, and damage. For the most part, cc is ineffective when you get to the raid level. To maximize your effectiveness in raiding, its all about dishing out as much damage as possible. Its debateable which tree does this best as all 3 can be effective if played properly. Trap talents should mostly be ignored in favor of other talents for serious raiding.
The first step to maximizing dps is to use your pet. It can't be stressed enough. Letting your pet drag along by your side costs the hunter 10-20% of their damage depending on spec.
BM is by far the easiest. Thanks to serpent's swiftness, BM hunters can focus on nothing but a highly efficient autoshot/steadyshot cycle. Your pet will be a big contributor. Try to keep your own pet healed with mend pet. Healers are often too busy with healing actual party members to worry about your pet. BM hunters can balance rap and crit.
Marksman dps requires a bit more effort and is highly inefficient in terms of mana usage. They need to weave arcane shot and multishot into the autoshot/steadyshot cycle as much as possible. This is a big drain on mana. Dropping mana potions often will be needed in most cases to maintain high dps. Fel mana potions are by far an excellent option. Chain chugging potions is expensive but it is the cost of high dps. As a 20/41/0 spec, your pet will still be a large contributor. Marksman generally prefers boosting rap.
Survival is probably the hardest to play effectively. This is due largely to the gear requirement. A survival hunter should be stacking as much agility as possible. Sub 600 agility survival doesn't compare to marks and BM. Even at 800 agility it is a fairly close match. Survival should use arcane shot and multishot as much as possible. 3/3 Thrill of the hunt makes survival hunters much more mana efficient then marksman hunters.
PvP
Battlegrounds
PvP as a hunter in general is all about burst damage. For battlegrounds, arcane shot and multishot will be your friends. Tactically, you should always try to stay as far away as possible. Utilizing terrain and obstructions to hide yourself is a sound strategy. This works especially well in Alterac Valley.
Marksman or survival specs are perhaps best in battlegrounds. Simply burn as much mana as possible dealing out high damage. Die and repeat. Marks will offer high burst damage with some added control from silencing shot and scatter shot. Survival helps do just that. Higher health and some tricks to help the hunter stay at range.
FD can be useful against unwitting players or at least to cause your enemy to loose target for a moment. This can cause spell casts to fail.
Arena
Arena combat is generally about control and survival. Freezing traps and flares help a great deal.
Each talent tree provides some useful tools for arena combat. BM makes your pet an extreme threat and the Beast Within (tbw) makes both hunter and pet immune to fear for a short while. Given the prevelence of fear in arena combat, tbw can be a life saver. BM however is a fairly steady source of damage and doesn't provide as much burst as marks or survival.
Marksman provides scatter shot and silencing shot for control. This can work wonders to keep healers from casting. Aimed shot helps to reduce any healing that does get done. The buffs to multishot provide an increased degree in burst damage.
Survival provides improved traps and added health. Imp wing clip, deterance, and counterattack help the hunter stay at range and alive. The heavy boosts to crit result in a high degree of burst damage making it harder to heal through your damage.
