Location
Karazhan is located in Deadwind Pass. For Alliance players the closest flightmaster is Darkshire. Horde players usually fly in to Stoneard.
Attunement
- Complete the quests Restless Activity and Arcane Disturbances given by Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan.
- You must then visit Dalaran and talk to Archmage Cedric who will send you to Khadgar in Shattrath City.
- Khadgar will give you a quest to retrieve the [First Key Fragment] from a Arcane Container in Shadow Labyrinth. It is located in the room of the last boss Murmur.
- Next you need to retrieve two more key fragments from The Steamvault and The Arcatraz. The Steamvaults fragment is found near the first boss in the water. The Arcatraz fragment is found in the corner of the blue room with all the large void creatures shortly after the first boss.
- Khadgar will now ask you to visit Medivh in The Black Morass instance of the Caverns of Time. You will need to complete the event before Medivh will talk to you.
- Return to Khadgar in Shattrath and he will give you [The Master's Key] which allows entrance to Karazhan.
As of patch 2.4, the master's key is not required to enter karazhan. The key is only required to open the front gate. This means only 1 raid members needs the key.
Encounters
Karazhan houses 11 encounters including 9 bosses, the chess game event, and the Opera Event (random of three possible encounters). There are also 3 possible mini-bosses found inside the servent's quarters. Not every encounter is required, but to properly gear up it is recommended to complete the entire instance. The Curator is considered a gear check event for the rest of the instance.
Servant's Quarters
These are found immediately to the right as you enter into Karazhan. This area is filled with spiders, bats, and darkhounds. In this area, you can continue to kill mobs as they respawn and eventually a mini-boss will appear. Killing in this area is a good introduction to Karazhan. It will gain some amount of loot and reputation with the Violet Eye. Killing the mini-bosses does not result in being saved to a raid-id. Each boss drops a randomly enchanted epic.
The 3 minibosses are each based on one of the creature types found in the quarters.
- Bat mini-boss: Shadikith the Glider
- Spider mini-boss: Hyakiss the Lurker
- Hound mini-boss: Rokad the Ravager
The Livery Stable
The trash here is on a fairly short reset timer, so the stable is a bit of a sprint to clear the trash before the boss. Take too long and you'll end up with respawns during the boss fight. This typically results in a wipe. The trash before Attumen is essentially a gear and coordination check for the rest of the instance. The pulls get increasingly difficult starting with a single target and ending with a 5 target pull.
Boss: Attumen the Huntsman
Banquet Hall
This section of Karazhan is easily reached by heading up the Grand Staircase that is just inside the front entrance. Ghostly guests are found dancing and eating, while skeletal servents attend to their desires. The region is watched over by the Tower Steward, Moroes.
Boss: Moroes
The Guest Quarters
The guest quarters can be found by heading up through the Servant's Quarters or by heading up the Grand Staircase toward the Opera Room. There are undead and demons roaming these halls. Be ready to shackle and banish.
Boss: Maiden of Virtue
Opera House
There are numerous undead in the Opera House region. A large group of them sit in front of the stage waiting for the performance to begin. These can be killed quickly with aoe or ignored by skirting the outside wall. If left alive, this crowd will cheer and watch as players participate in the Opera event.
Boss: Opera Event
The Menagerie
On the way to the Menagerie, players will pass a side entrance to Karazhan. Opening this door allows a quicker route should players have to do a graveyard run or continue on a second day. Players will have to climb up a ruined tower to get to the Menagerie. This is a long hallway which is patrolled by the Curator.
Boss: The Curator
The Guardian's Library
The library is fairly heavily littered with trash to clear. Throughout the area, there are books that can be looted. They are called sealed tomes. These will reward players with a random 1 use book. There are 4 different possible tomes. Each tome is focused toward one of the raiding roles. You can only have the buff from 1 book at a time. The buffs last for an hour.
Redemption of the Fallen
These should be given to your healers as the buff gives a chance to summon a ghost healer whenever a healing spell is cast. The ghostly healer allies will also cast heals.
Torment of the Worgen
These should be given to your physical dps players. This buff occasionally turns the player into a worgen. While in the worgen form, the player will deal additional shadow damage on ranged or melee attacks.
Wrath of the Titans
These should be given to your magical dps players. This buff gives all harmful spells cast a chance to deal additional damage.
Legacy of the Mountain King
These should be given to your tank. The buff gives an chance to receive an increase in armor and resistance when struck in combat.
Eventually while moving up ramps, the raid will come to a split that either continues up into Kara or to a large pair of double doors. Behind those doors awaits the Shade of Aran.
Boss: Shade of Aran
Celestial Watch
Behind another closed door, there is an observatory. Patrolling around the far side of the room is the dragon Netherspite.

The Repository
This path is actually hidden behind a usable bookcase. When used, the bookcase will swing open revealing a secret passage that leads to Illhoof.
Boss: Terestian Illhoof
Gamesman's Hall
Just before the Hall is a vendor. This is a good spot to repair and take any bathroom breaks that are needed. As you enter the game hall, you'll notice the room is one giant chess board. The shade of Medivh roams around the room waiting for someone to challenge him to a game of chess.
Boss: Chess Event
Netherspace
This is the highest point in Karazhan. The Prince can be seen out on the Terrace. He has a large aggro range, so stay near the door while preparing for the fight. The door will close once the Prince is engaged.
Boss: Prince Malchezaar
The Master's Terrace
The Master's Terrace is actually midway into Karazhan. It is found nearby the side door entrance. Just before heading up the very first ramp toward Curator, turn around and instead head outside. This balcony will wrap around. Right at around the midpoint, there is a skull laying on the group. This is the point where Nightbane will land when summoned.
