Talents

The mage trees include Arcane, Fire, and Frost. Arcane has many viable talents for both PvE and PvP; notable talents include Clearcasting, which can give you 10% chance to have your next spellcast cost no mana, Improved Counter Spell, which silences an enemy for up to 4 seconds (instead of just locking out one school of magic), and Presence of Mind, which makes your next spell cast instant (no opponent likes an instant Pyroblast). A PvE Arcane build will rely heavily on mana, the most out of all three trees. Arcane is favored by high-end PvE mages (those with the 2 Tier 5 piece bonus, which grants 20% extra damage to Arcane Blast).

The Fire tree is more oriented towards PvE, as it focuses on maximum damage output. Notable talents include Pyroblast, an extremely powerful, 6-second cast that goes great with Presence of Mind, Blast Wave, an effective instant AoE spell that does great damage, and Dragon's Breath, an instant-cast spell that does good damage and disorients your opponent for 3 seconds. Like the Arcane tree, it relies heavily on mana, but not as much. Fire is favored by high-end PvE mages, as well as those starting out with serious raiding (many mages re-spec Arcane once they get the 2 piece Tier 5 bonus, but Fire still great damage).

The Frost tree is more oriented towards PvP, as it focuses on survivability, less mana usage, kiting, and snares. This tree includes some of the best talents offered to a mage, and also includes great burst ability with the Shatter and Ice Shards talents. Notable talents include Cold Snap, which finishes the cooldown on all Frost spells, Ice Barrier, which is a great shield that absorbs up to 977 damage, and the Water Elemental, a summoned elemental that uses a Waterbolt (similar to a mage's frostbolt but it does less damage) and a ranged frost nova. The Water Elemental lasts for 45 seconds. The Frost Tree uses the least mana out of all three trees, and is favored by more PvP-oriented mages.

Popular Builds

Arcane


Mostly used for PvE encounters. Note: Theorycrafting has proven this spec to be obsolete in modern day raiding environments.
This build provides some great burst damage needed to perform well, specifically in Arena battles. It provides the main spell power benefits of both Arcane and Frost trees, yet is also geared specifically for burst damage.
This is a very strong build even when put up against the famed 2/48/11 fire build. The strategy here is to spam Arcane Blast until low on mana and then spam Frostbolt until enough mana is regenerated to spam AB again. This build is only recommended when grouped with a Shadow Priest, and preferably a Shaman as well. +Intellect and +Spirit gems are also recommended to use in conjunction with this build

Fire


In ideal conditions, this is the best raiding spec for total damage output. Cooldown stacking plays a large role in the success of this build.
Also known as the "3 minute mage" this build allows for the use of Presence of Mind, Arcane Power, and Pyroblast all in one (usually put in a macro, along with the use of a trinket). The instant cast pyroblast adds extra DPS in a raiding/partying environment especially when used while clearcasting (increase chance to crit).
This build relies on heavy spamming of scorch to get quick crits. With 5 points in Impact and spamming of scorch stunning becomes another aid to this build.
This build has been proven to be highly effective in raiding situations when the caster has high amounts of +spell damage. Also a very viable PvP build. The point put in Improved Fire Blast is often put into Blazing Speed, but depends upon preference. When used mostly for PvP it's recommended to put points from Playing with Fire into Blazing speed.
  • Hybrid Arcane/Fire 33/28/0 (PvP/PvE)
This is a great build for those mages who want both strength in PvP and PvE environments. Its DPS is only beaten by Heavy Fire in raiding environments.

Frost


For PvP - specifically for Arena - this is one of the builds all mages should take a look at. You're not going to be able to find any more survivability and burst damage required for Arenas than here.
Relying strictly on crit chance and damage, this build allows for huge frostbolt crits. At 70 you should have near a 100% chance to crit against frozen targets; combined with 150% bonus to critical hits this is a very potent PvP build for quick crits.
  • Impact/Full Frost Combo 0/5/56 (PvP)
Another popular PvP build that has the effects of a full frost build, but also depends on a quick scorch or fire blast to stun an opponent for 2 seconds. Molten armor procs also make this build shine, as molten armor can also have the impact ability. Utilizing an effective frost combo with an occasional fire blast, as well as keeping molten armor up, makes this a deadly build in PvP.

PvP strategies

In General

The mage is a "glass cannon," a class that is capable of high amounts of damage, but is very vulnerable and can only take so much damage. Spell pushback (which is expanding the time it takes a timed spellcast to actually be cast due to the damage being taken) also hinders the class. However, the mage has powerful instant cast spells as well as strong forms of crowd control, kiting ability, and snares. You'll need to know separate strategies against certain classes and their respective builds, how to be mana-efficient, use blink, when to use CS (counter spell), and use CC (crowd control), kiting, and snares effectively to be a good mage.

  • You'll want to bind a key for rank 1 blizzard, which is very useful against a rogue who just stealthed.
  • You'll also want to bind a key for rank 1 frostbolt for effective melee class kiting.
  • Rank 1 arcane explosion can also help for rogues who have stealthed near you.
  • The mage is one of the hardest classes in the game to master, so don't be discouraged if you lose a lot of matches or do poorly in the beginning. The mage takes a lot of experience to play well.

Against Warriors

Warriors will prove to be one of the easiest fights for a frost mage, as you can easily kite them around. The most important fact to remember for a warrior is to always blink out of intercept stun. NEVER blink out of a simple charge, as the warrior will then just intercept you and destroy you. The second most important fact to remember is you have to keep your distance between you and the warrior. Use rank 1 frostbolt to keep a good distance away, and frost nova and then ice lance when they come close.

If you want to set up a frostbolt/ice lance combo when they're in frost nova, be careful, as a good warrior may switch to defensive stance and use spell reflect (which is no fun). Pay attention to what the warrior does. If he has at least 25 rage which you frost nova him, you'll know that he may spell reflect, so just ice lance him. If he has less than 25 rage, go for a combo. You'll also notice a large glow above his head when he activates spell reflect, so pay attention to that too.

Whenever a warrior uses spell reflect, just ice lance him to minimize the damage, then resume normal damage. As long as you keep your distance, blink out of intercept, and use frost nova when they come close, you should have no problem taking on a warrior in a 1 vs. 1 situation. The thing to look out for, however, are mace stun procs, which can be annoying. Depending on the situation, you'll either want to trinket out or ice block.
